Originally wasn't going to do a trip report for this one but figured since this cruise was pretty different from our Port Canaveral cruises AND we have 12 hours left to drive home I would get some thoughts on paper...errrr screen :lmao:

This was our first west coast cruise although not our first spin on the Wonder. It was me, DH and our 3 boys. For DH and I it was our 8th cruise, for the boys - their 2nd (and their first 7 night).

So here we go....

Day 1:
I will start by saying that leaving from the west coast was entirely different from the familiarity and magic of Port Canaveral. We drove in and stayed the night before at Paradise Pier with a lovely view of California Adventure. Best part was getting to see their World of Color light show from our room while listening to the music through the TV. From there we drove to the port - about a 30 - 35 minute drive, although with the LA traffic and fog that rolled in that day I think I may have lost at least a year of my life :scared1:

Upon arriving at the port we found it a bit more confusing. I will say that I truly didn't appreciate just how together PC (Port Canaveral) has it until this experience. There really weren't clear signs as to where we could drop the luggage off before parking so we ended up going in and being unable to get back out of the lot without parking. The porters are not allowed to go past the gate of the lot so we had to drag all our luggage to the gate - not the end of the world but definitely not what we expected. Once we parked and had the luggage gone, we were directed into a building where they immediately checked our passports and cruise confirmation - again, different so be sure to have that handy. We then went into the "waiting" area where we immediately did the health form (no recent communicable diseases, etc) and then were directed to the Castaway check in line. We didn't have to wait to long and again, the difference in these "cast members" was quite notable. Also, we only received one lanyard - so for our family of 5 this was a little disappointing as we have always been given enough for everyone.

After this we did the youth signin where the two younger boys received their new mega plastic chunks that sit on a bracelet. These make sure they can track them and we were warned they would cost $25 if lost. The "bracelet" part is similar to the bands you get when you go to a concert. So for my rough and tumble guys, they each had to have them replaced once. MS (middle son) actually tried to repair his own with a sticker...... thankfully we figured that one out in time! LS (lil son) almost lost his in the ocean at Cabo :upsidedow while playing in the waves/sand.

After getting this done we sat and waited - no characters, no pictures (although they started taking some toward the end). Then they finally started calling boarding numbers. We had arrived pretty early (about 11) and still were in group 8 for boarding so there were definitely some earlybirds. From what I could tell, the time I selected to board during online checkin really meant nothing.

We walked through the opening and were directed to their "boarding picture" area which was actually set up outside. They had two of them set up and that line moved pretty quick. These pics actually turned out really well - keepers. From there we walked down about 3 levels of gangway until we finally got to deck 3 where we went in as usual. :cool1:

Day 1 continued.....

After boarding and sighing in relief that we actually made it, we were told our staterooms wouldn't be ready until 2pm - it was about noon so we figured we would just do our usual - eat and explore until then. Our favorite thing to do is eat at Parrot Cay after boarding - it is just tradition. Thankfully we were the second to last family let in before they started directing folks up to 9. Again that just speaks to how many earlybirds were ahead of us.

Something interesting we noticed about this cruise was that there was an abundance of first time cruisers. Having cruised primarily on the Magic for 7 night cruises, we are use to the even mix of regulars and first timers. With so many first timers on board we definitely noticed differences which I will explain more as I go. Secondly, our cruise was definitely not full - which was awesome.

Lunch was fantastic as usual - we took our time and enjoyed the food and watching people as they went back over and over and over... I wanted to say "slow down - you have days of food to go!" lol

After finishing up lunch and walking around a bit, we heard an announcement that the rooms were ready - much sooner than 2! :yay: So we made our way to deck 2 and as we walked to our room were greeted by our semi-frantic room steward who didn't agree with that announcement lol. Thankfully we had 2 rooms for the 5 of us and one was ready so we just set everything in there and set off to explore some more.

Not a lot had changed on the Wonder from the first floors we explored before returning to our rooms. I had a FE meet at 3:30 that we ran down to before heading back to the room for the lifeboat drill. We were very surprised to find out that we did not have to put the lifejackets on for the drill anymore! That made it much easier. Our meeting place was on deck 4 in the WD Theater - comfy and quick. Before we knew it we were done and headed up to deck 10 for the sail away. :cheer2:

reading as we leave in less than 2 weeks... Who were the guest entertainers on board?

Thanks for the report....I also leave in less that two weeks and have been hoping a new report would show up.

Looking forward to reading more about your adventure.

How was the weather?

Thanks for taking the time out to start your TR. Looking for to the rest. We are also leave this month.

I think someone is too exhausted to go on....a good sign that the trip was a success.

Hope that we see more.

LOL sorry to leave you hanging guys - we spent yesterday driving home. Getting everything packed up and will work on another update tonight.

One note - this cruise - the first day or two and the last day are much chillier than we are used to - so take a light jacket or sweater! Ok - will be back on after get the kids fed, settled, busy :lmao:

More thoughts from the cruise

So after the lifeboat drill, we headed up to deck 10 for the sail away party. Right away we could tell that the cruise wasn't full. There was still plenty of places to hang out on both deck 9 and 10. It was definitely cooler than we are use to for sail aways - as the year continues I would definitely say to take a light jacket. As always, sail away was awesome. Sparkly streamers were handed out and it was awesome as always. We then headed to our favorite spot toward the front to watch sail away.

Now here is where we noticed differences from 2 yrs ago when we sailed. There have been changes to the Wonder on deck 10 - they added some glass/plastic type of windows that probably protect from the wind and cold for the Alaska sailings. They worked pretty well on this cruise too.

Now anyone who has left out of PC knows that people usually stand on the shores and wave or in the restaurants. At first we didn't think it would happen here but lo and behold - it was even better! There was a restaurant that actually got on a loudspeaker wishing us a great journey as we went - pretty cool.

That night dinner was at Tritons - we had Lito as our server and he was FANTASTIC. Highly recommend him - he was always so great to our boys and checked regularly to make sure we had all we needed.

We didn't go to the show that night - it was the only one we skipped. So after watching Transformers for the 1st time out of about a zillion this cruise, we drifted off to sleep happily in our lil ocean view room. :cloud9:

Thought I would share a few pics to help you get the real feel of the cruise

How was the weather?

Aside from the first day and last day or so, it was gorgeous! :cool1: Both ports were perfect temps, weather was just right - we were able to swim without being chilled after - but also didn't get scorching hot.

Yah...hoping for this on our MR cruise in Feb but not expecting it.:thumbsup2

So I will start by saying that the MR cruise was the smoothest cruise I think we have been on. There was a little movement the second to last night but I think it was more that we were moving pretty fast to get back from Cabo than anything. Also, in PC when you come in there is always that section where it gets a little rocky - not so on the MR.

Day 2 was very laid back really. This was the day we had our first Palo brunch (yes I said first - we actually did 2!) With the ship not being full and so many first time cruisers we were actually able to book 2 brunches and 2 Palo dinners!! We were almost Palo'd out....but not really :) Our server, Hristo was fabulous and we actually requested him for our other dinner and brunch. He truly made it magical. My absolute favorite this time on the brunch were the sticky buns. I don't remember them being there before but they were hot, soft and YUMMMMMMY!

After spending about 2 hours eating, talking and staring at the ocean, we wandered back to the room and promptly fell asleep AGAIN! :scared1: What is it with cruises that make you so relaxed and sleepy? It was fabulous, a nice little nap and it was time to go wander the ship. We made a stop at Shutters and this time, opted to purchase the photo CD. The CD cost $279 but it gives us all the pictures taken on the cruise and the rights to them. So rather than just have 20 prints or so, we came home with all the photos to do whatever we want with. We ended up with almost 100 professionally taken photos - not bad really. And all three boys were smiling in them (that is the TRUE miracle). :lmao:

Ok will write more a bit later - see ya soon!!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write your trip report. It helps us all that have a cruise coming up pass the time.

Looking forward to reading more.
