I have read that people freeze their water bottles. I was wondering if the rented refrigerators have a freezer of do you just put the bottles in an ice bucket or cooler full of ice. Any suggestions?

We've done it a couple of ways depending on our accomodations.

If we don't have a fridge (hardly ever anymore), we just stuff the bottle as full as possible with ice cubes before we leave the room in the morning. Throughout the day, we just get a cup of ice at any restaurant and refill the bottle with more ice and water.

If we have a freezer, we fill the bottle about 1/3 of the way full and freeze it overnite. Then in the morning we fill it the rest of the way with water. Our bottle has an insulated case with shoulder strap. It keeps that block of ice frozen most of the day and we just add more water at water fountains or restaurants. We can also add more ice if needed.

Of course, we only drink tap water. We think paying for water is ridiculous. I'm not sure what the folks who insist on bottled water do. I guess you could freeze a half filled bottle and pour in more bottled water in the morning.

We have always carried a soft side cooler that we pack in our suitcase then fill with ice at the hotel and pack it full of water bottkles overnight. While they are not frozen they are really cold and we just keep getting cups with ice as we go around the park.

has your frozen water bottles ever expand and crack, this happenned to me several times last year going to the beach

The best way to freeze your waterbottles is to fill them with water, leaving about an inch at the top (depends on what sort of mouth the bottle has) for the ice to expand. Also, if you put the lid on, do not screw it on tightly, but leave it just resting on top. This allows the air to escape as the ice expands, and should eliminate cracking issues. disneysteve's suggestion of filling partway, freezing, then adding water is also a good idea. If you have a bunch of waterbottles for your family and will keep them all together, eg in a stroller basket, the ice will take longer to melt. But note that as soon as you add water to a block of ice, it starts to melt faster than if you had just frozen a whole bottle of ice.

My 100th post.

I found that filling the bottles halfway and freezing worked best for us. Top them off in the morning and by the time we got to the park and through the gates we were thirsty already. There was enough water to get a few sips, and the ice slug would last for two refills and four hours or so. I never used the lanyards, I just carried them in my slingpack.

One thing that the kids liked was to take the filter out of one of the water bottles and freeze lemonade instead of water. I would carry two, one lemonade and one water. The kids never knew which one they were getting so it was always a surprise.
