I've not heard anyone talk about Freeport. Is it worth getting off the boat? Has anyone done the Lucayan beach experience? Suggestions/thoughts for this port would be greatly appreciated!
I went to Freeport this past December (2001). I know a lot of folks don't care for it, but I am a get off the boat type person (even if it's just for a couple of hours). Besides, how often are you gonna go to Freeport? It was a nice change after cruising on DCL several times before and not stopping there. It gave me somewhere else to research and discover.
We didn't go to Lucayan Beach though a few folks on board did, we instead went to the Lucayan market place. It was very clean, though a bit small but the people aren't as pushy there as they are in Nassau. We did some shopping and had coconut drinks (out of real coconuts) and wondered around a bit. The taxi ride isn't to bad it's only about a 20 minute ride from the boat and the drivers are very friendly. One of the drivers we rode with had just gotten back from Tampa where we live and we chatted about his vacation experience here. We learned lots of great local stuff (like your allowed to drink and drive in Freeport) and since Freeport is more residental than Nassau we got to experience a lot more of the culture. I enjoyed my little four hour excursion in Freeport and would do it again if I went with someone who hadn't been before. But, now it's just like Nassau for me...been there, done that.
