I'm afraid I have no experience of the Nationwide Insurance. I looked on 'Which' and they recommend the following family insurance policies, so you could perhaps check what their level of cover is.

Annual Worldwide Family Insurance Policies (including USA)
Topnotchcover.com Silver £53a (online only) Max age 54 71% (customer satisfaction); Atlas Direct Comprehensive £65 Max age 64 68%; AnnualTravelInsurance.com Super £65b (online price, phone may be higher) Max age 65 76%; GreatCover.com Super £67b,e (online price, phone may be higher, price includes admin fee) Max Age 65 75%; Holidaysafe Premier £70 Max age 55 74%

We have worldwide travel insurance included with my M&S Premier Club credit card. Covers us both (would include kids if they were under 18 as well but they ain't) until we're 80. Paid out when we got stuck with the volcanic ash in April 2010. :thumbsup2

How does it compare to the insurance you used last time/or what you would take out if you didn't take this one out (looking at level of cover, not at price)?

I looked into a similar insurance with the bank that came with an account and decided not to because it gave me less cover in certain clauses than what I was used to. Now I do admit I have a tendency to slightly over insure in some areas and that is by choice so it probably would have been fine for me but I am still not tempted.

It's hard to look at yours, not knowing you or your family's needs and ascertain whether it would be adequate cover or a good deal or not and personally, I would do a comparison based on what you feel you need and would be happy with. If this one checks all the boxes (or at least all those important to you) then I would say it's a good deal. Another thing that is worth doing is searching reviews and ratings on that policy and see what others say about it. :goodvibes

Thank you.:goodvibes

I will check out the reviews. It looks OK to me but I have little to compare it with. I'm not sure what sort of cover we require because we don't go abroad as a family.:confused3 It covers cancellation up to £5000 which seems pretty good.

if you normally have an annual would just compare the details with the one you usually use, if ok worth it

Just watch out for what they class as pre existing conditions.

I know when I looked at the m and s one mentioned above we were excluded.

Things like have you seen a consultant in the last x months - due to DD's disability she doesn't qualify as she has regular paediatric apts.

Regular medication often disqualifies you aswell.

Am I right in thinking that if your condition isn't in any way related to a claim, then your insurance would still be valid? I take thyroxine for a thyroid condition but it would never be necessary to see a doctor about it on holiday. I couldn't imagine it ever being a factor in a claim.:confused3 To be honest, it wouldn't have occured to me to disclose it.

No you usually need to declare all medical conditions/medication to ensure you are fully covered.

I wouldn't take any chances of not being covered especially in US.

Unfortunately you do need to take the time to read the terms to see what each insurers policy is.

It seems to be a minefield! I will give them a ring and see what they say. Thanks for your advice :)

I've just been looking at these and they look good. The figures are all based on £3k cancellation which I have just realised is per person not per party and should be sufficient for our needs.

Another one I've come across is ProtectYourBubble which was a Which Best Buy last year.

One of the policies I've looked as says Thyroid issues are waived from pre-existing medical conditions, so you can declare it but it should affect the price of your policy. Just check the policy carefully.

I phoned Nationwide and their policy would cover me with my thyroid problem at no extra cost. It would cost a total of £50 to cover all of us. My mum has a 'life-limiting' illness and they would not cover us for that, but I guess that not many insurance companies would cover that under cancellation.

I think I might go with Nationwide as their European cover would be free all year for me and DH.:confused3

I meant to say it shouldn't affect the price of your policy not should!!

as with all policy's you have to declare any medical conditions before buying. No mater how slight they are if there not declared they can refuse any claim if you have not declared. Most illness are covered some just bump up premium a little and a few a lot. its never worth the risk not to declare
