Free Entrance from CM and AP Questions

So a few threads on upgrading to an AP got me thinking.
Could you use a "free admission" ticket to upgrade?
Would the following situation work:
You have 3-day PH, you use 1st Day, 2nd Day, and 4th Day.
On your 3rd Day you get in for free through a friend of a friend.
If I wanted to upgrade to an AP and use my 3-day PH, could I also add in the "free-day" Park Hopper? Or does this ticket show no value?
I'm new but wondered how all this worked. I know people will sell their used tickets for AP-upgrades. So I wondered if you could combine.
Also, when do you upgrade? The last day of the trip or could it be anytime?

You cannot use CM free entry to upgrade. They show as no value. You would need to upgrade a from a hopper (that has a dollar value on it), and you must do it before you leave the park on the last day of that hopper, but you could upgrade anytime after entering the first time as well. Make sense?

It's exactlly what I figured...it was worth a try, right?
So I could upgrade any moment from when I first use the Park Hopper but must do it before I leave the park on the last day valid.

Right. Keep in mind that as soon as you upgrade, you become eligible for AP discounts, but those are not retroactive. Likewise, after upgrading you lose any perks that your regular ticket may have given you(early entry, free parking through AAA) so you need to figure out if the perks are worth more than the discounts.

ok, so I have 2 MM on my 3day park hopper. So if we want to upgrade, do it after we have used the 2 MM?!

Yes, unless you are staying on site, then you get free MM the days of your stay.
