I am getting annual passes for my trip in may
We will be returning in August for another visit
How does free dining work with annual passes
So I buy them now before we go in may? Or wait till I get there to purchase tickets.

Are you wanting to get free dining for your May trip or your August trip? In order to get free dining you have to purchase a package including paying rack rate for your room and a minimum of a 2-day base ticket for everyone in the room ages 3 and up. So if you get an AP in May, but you want to book a free dining stay for August, you will have to buy 2-day tickets and save them until your AP expires. You can then use the value of that ticket towards the cost of your AP renewal.

Will there be a third trip during the year where you'll have the APs? Will you be able to use the 2 day tickets you purchase during the August free dining trip down the road? If neither of these questions can be answered with a YES then you REALLY need to put pen to paper and do the math to see if it makes sense. How many nights is the August trip? Would the dining OOP cost as much as those 2 day tickets even with paying rack rate? Then once room discounts come out (I would put money on there being room discounts for the period of time where free dining is currently being offered and I'm not even a betting woman) then that adds to the comparisson you should do.

If you look at my signature, you'll see that I've gone at least twice per year for a few years. It only made sense once for us to buy APs because all other times would have cost us more money because of ticket purchase requirements with packages and/or our kids attending YES classes.
