I just read about freecycle.com on a teacher forum I go to regularly. Does anyone have experience using it?

I know people in Maine who use it as a good way to get rid of serviceable items they don't expect to sell. Better than throwing it into the trash stream.

Guess it works In reverse. Someone gets some good stuff for free.

I've used it here in NC. I enjoyed it. It can be a bit overwhelming with responses, but if you don't want to haul it to Goodwill, it's a good way to get it out of your house. People post wanted/needed/offered. Sometimes you're able to help someone out by GIVING someone something that you've maybe been hanging onto for whatever reason. I helped a newly widowed service member's wife with a DVD player that we weren't using and some nice children's clothes that my kids had outgrown. There are some doozy's out there, so be careful. And a few that don't show. That's annoying. I know some people meet at a mutual place for the hand off just so they won't know where you live. Good luck.

It's pretty popular in NYC. Craigslist can be a hassle -- lots of people flake out, you end up haggling over prices, etc. Freecycle is often super speedy and more low-key. There isn't much to haggle over when it is free!

I was able to give away a great chair that needed some TLC, and I also got rid of this huge old IKEA cabinet that had seen better days. I was thrilled -- both would have been a huge hassle to dispose of, and I was glad that they both found better homes and avoided death by landfill. I've never been the recipient of a free item (as a studio-dweller I am forever trying to pare down), but I've certainly seen some interesting items pop up on the list.

I've offered up a few items, but never taken anything from others. The emails can get hot & heavy sometimes, so I subscribe to a couple of lists on digest just to keep it all at bay.

I really prefer it to just tossing stuff, and since I'm not permitted to have any garage sales in my development, it's a decent alternative.

Yes! Somebody was remodeling their house and freecycled their old dishwasher. It's old, loud and kind of clunky but its been in my kitchen for 3 or 4 years now.

I love it.

I've given away a lot of stuff on it, from hedge trimmers that don't work anymore, to broken kitchen appliances, books, kitchen clutter such as microwave cookware, old duvet inners and some plastic rubbish bins (all at different times).

I have a lady picking up our old computer desk tomorrow - she wanted one and I offered ours - as we aren't using it.

I've also picked up some great stuff on it, my most recent items were two pairs of swim fins/flippers which will be coming on our WBTA cruise with us in September and dropped at GW once we get to Florida - saves paying Disney prices and leaves room in the suitcase for souvenirs.

I have used it on both ends of the bargain. I have given away a lot of things and I have picked up a thing or two (like a betta fish tank for my DD). Someone asked me to deliver a dresser once but I said "no way!". I'm not delivering anything. A lot of times I just leave stuff on my front porch ... the dog barks and it's gone.
