Three forty-somethings and a young slip of a thing :)

Happy Valentines Day

Owing to a serious lack of alcohol last night (I only had 2 pink things), I was awake at 5.30 this morning. I went out onto the balcony to read my book until 7, when I came back in to wake Gary and get showered and dressed. We ended up leaving at about 8:30, which was a bit later than I wanted but I managed not to stress about it. Note to Gary here – tapping my foot and sighing loudly while everyone else is being slow is NOT stressing!

We got to Universal with no detours or navigational errors – either Gary’s driving is getting better or my map reading skills are improving! At the entrance to the parking lot, we used my PAP to get preferred parking for the bargain price of $5. Parked up in King Kong 308 and a short walk later we’re on the moving walkways that take us into City Walk. This is the bit I love, with the music blaring and the sun shining – what a fantastic start to the day.

We arrive at the entrance to US, where they have already started letting people in (see – this is why I wanted to leave at 8 – still not stressing though).

Unfortunately, there was a problem with Christine and Mark’s tickets (we had bought 4 tickets the previous year but ended up only using 2 as Gary and I both bought Annual Passes). We got sent over to guest services to sort the problem out, where a really helpful guy told me that I had obviously inadvertently brought the 2 USED tickets and left the 2 UNUSED ones at home. Doh! It was easily sorted and he quickly printed 2 brand new tickets for us. This all took a bit longer than I would have liked and we didn’t enter the park till 9:30. With 30 minutes of park time lost, it was straight into commando mode and I frogmarched everyone to Revenge of the Mummy. Only kidding, I wasn’t quite that bad. Christine has asked me to add here that she didn’t think I was at all obsessive compulsive or controlling – I even let her and Mark look after their own park tickets.

Mark had previously visited US 12 years ago and Christine had never been so ROTM was brand new to them both and they were both really impressed. We rode twice and then GI Joh led them on to Earthquake. There was a 15-minute wait but we had learned in previous years that it doesn’t really get any better than this so in we went. This is where Mark surprised us by suddenly developing a desire for fame, fortune and recognition. When the host asked for a volunteer, Mark was the first guy with his hand up. Christine kept asking me what he’d volunteered for and I assumed it was one of the guys on the submarine but we later found out that it wasn’t. He actually ended up being the stunt guy who has to hang from the top of the building but ends up falling. He was absolutely hysterical and was deserving of an Oscar for his performance, which was so hammed up it was hilarious. I have it all on video and never tire of watching it – it just cracks me up every time. We were reunited to go on the ‘train’ ride, which we all really enjoyed. Mark was still revelling in his moment of glory.

From Earthquake, we went to Men in Black where, much to my disgust, Gary pressed the red button at lightning speed and got the 100,000-point bonus, scoring a very respectable 251,000 points. I lagged behind slightly with 190,000 (what a fantastic score that would have been if I’d got the bonus!). Mark was next with just over 100,000 and finally Christine with a pitiful 24,000 points. Gary commented that she should try keeping her eyes open while she was shooting next time. Despite Christine’s poor score, we still manage to gain Galaxy Defender status. We decide not to ride again – well, actually Christine wouldn’t let us – something to do with me and Gary and our competitive spirit – I don’t know what she means!

Gary, Mark and Christine decided to go on Back to the Future. I don’t like it (too jerky) so I went to phone home to check on the kids – and the in-laws! After asking whether I was still in The Merica, Daniel enquired about the status of his promised lego and chocolate lollipops. I assured him I hadn’t forgotten them and would make sure I brought them home for him in my suitcase. I spoke to both girls, neither of whom had received any Valentines Cards – not that they were admitting to anyway. MIL confirmed that all the children were behaving themselves and everything was fine.

I wandered back to meet the others. Christine was hungry so we decided to go on ET then get something to eat. On the way we saw Shaggy and Scooby so had to have a picture taken.

We also saw the penguins from Madagascar and Gary and I decided to get a picture with them too. There were a crowd of teens in front of us and one guy went up to dance with the penguins. It was hilarious, they were really getting jiggy with it – when one of the penguins fell over backwards and couldn’t get up again, the others were all laughing so much none of them could help him – it was really funny.

We joined the queue for ET and gave our names to the programmer (Thelma, Louise, Jake and Elwood). Then we were off to help ET save his home planet. We all laughed like drains at the end when he said ‘our’ names. Simple things eh?

In serious need of food now, it was off to Mel’s Diner where 2 cheeseburger meals and 2 chicken strips meals were consumed. To be honest, the food has not improved from when we ate here 3 years ago – it was barely warm and quite bland really. Not at all impressed. After a quick cigarette break, it was off to find Shrek and Donkey for more pictures.

Then Christine went to look round the shops while Gary, Mark and I rode Jimmy Neutron. Unfortunately, there was a technical difficulty halfway through, the ride stopped for about 10 minutes and we were stuck. Then we had to endure the whole thing from the start again – definitely not a good idea on a full stomach. We met Christine at the exit and waited while she had her picture taken with Spongebob Square Pants (her hero!) Next we saw Shrek 4D, which we all enjoyed. We strolled back round to Mel’s Diner, where there was a rock n roll band playing (The Vinyls). Me and Christine had a bit of a boogie, much to the amusement of passers by. Then it was on to Blues Brothers, which is usually one of my favourite things about Universal. Not any more. I really hope it’s not a permanent change but there was no waitress – just the saxophonist and Jake and Elwood. Not only that but the song line-up had changed and I only recognised one song they did. Very disappointing.

To cheer ourselves up, me and Gary went back on the Mummy. Christine, having eaten, was concerned that she may part with her lunch so they waited outside. We went to see what the wait time was for Jaws but it was 35 minutes so we decided not to bother. Got a drink each and then went to see Terminator 2 3D. Chris and Mark were very impressed – one thing I would say is that, having always sat near the back, we ended up right down the front this time and I didn’t enjoy it as much. The actors didn’t look as much like their characters up close and it sort of ruined the effect. Still a good show though.

There wasn’t much left to see by now and it was almost 4 o’clock so we left the park and wandered round City Walk. Christine wanted to get Joseph (her eldest DS) a NASCAR t-shirt but they didn’t have the one she wanted in his size. We bought a couple of t-shirts each from the Endangered Species store (mine were ‘happy bunny’ shirts – one said ‘Me. Like you. Only better’ and the other said ‘Cute but Psycho’ – Gary chose that one, I don’t know what he was trying to say!)

We wandered back to the car and decided to drive down International Drive and go to Friendlys for dinner. It’s one of our favourite places to go now – the staff are great, the food is tasty and it’s cheap! Gary and Mark both ordered milkshakes and Christine and I stuck with diet coke. Surprisingly, we were quite hungry. The place was pretty empty so the waitress took the order quickly and our food was there almost instantly.

Mark – BBQ chicken melt (9 out of 10 but he was too full to finish it) and chocolate fribble shake (10 out of 10)
Christine – Turkey Club Melt (8 out of 10)
Me – Turkey Club Melt (8 out of 10)
Gary – Sirloin steak tips, veg and rice (7 out of 10 because there were mushrooms in it) and vanilla fribble shake (10 out of 10)

We arrived back at BWV at 6:30 (after taking a slightly unintentional detour). In the room, we discovered that our kitchenette sink obviously had a blockage as it was half full of black sludgy water – yeuchh. We called maintenance, who arrived within 5 minutes. He tried several methods to unblock it but with no luck – it was well and truly clogged. After about an hour, we explained to him that we were going out and that we needed to get ready and asked if he could come back later. He was just about to go off shift so said he would get engineering to send someone back in the morning and he left. A few minutes later the phone rang and it was the front desk, offering to move us to another room. I explained that we were about to go out and that we only had 2 more nights left anyway so we didn’t want to have to pack and move just for a couple more days – however, it was a nice gesture and the sentiment was appreciated.

After a quick wash, change and application of make-up (me, not DH) it was off to Jellyrolls. We were a bit earlier arriving than the other night but there were already a few people in there. We had no problem finding a table, though, and sat down while the guys went to the bar for drinks. Unfortunately, Jellyrolls did NOT sell ‘pink things’ nor did they have any Bacardi Breezers. Oh well, looks like I’ll have to settle for vodka then. I won’t tell you everything there is to tell about the rest of the night, mainly because I don’t remember an awful lot of it.

I’ve always thought a picture can speak a thousand words – so here’s a few!!!

Suffice to say, a fantastic night was had, copious amounts of alcohol were drunk, lots of money was spent, lots of singing and dancing was done and Jellyrolls is now one of my favourite places at Disney World – we will most definitely be going back next time we are child free!!! I do know that I got a bit cash happy when someone in the audience gave one of the piano players $10 to stop playing a song I’d requested and start playing something else – obviously, I wanted to hear ‘my’ song so I promptly offered him $30 to play it all! After that, for some reason, Gary took charge of the money. We also ended up making lots of new friends – amazing how the combination of Disney World and alcohol helps to break down barriers – and came home with lots of pictures of complete strangers (seriously, some of the people in my photos I do not recognise) and lots of email addresses and phone numbers (‘Look us up if you’re ever passing through New York’, ‘Give us a call next time you’re in Vegas’ – yeah, sure!).

We made it back to BWV in the early hours of the morning and stumbled into bed. Night, night.

Sounds like a perfect day.

Very funny report, Joh, and a great day and night. When we were last in Universal (September), I saw the Blues Brothers a few times, and think there was only one occasion where the waitress was not there :) Really suprised to hear that BTTF is still open, I thought it was closing last year :confused3
