UGH! This afternoon, DS7 hopped into the car after school and promptly drank his leftover milk from breakfast...the milk that had sat out for 7 hours in my 90 degree car.

I am horrified, but there is nothing I can do about it now. This was 90 minutes ago. DH thinks he would have already gotten sick by now. I am not so sure.....

Any thoughts??

He will be fine. I'm sure there are awful things my DS2 eats/drinks without my knowing and he is just fine. Although it should have tasted gross if spoiled, he will be just fine. :goodvibes

If he was able to drink it without vomiting, and hasn't upchucked yet, I think he's safe. But keep a bucket by him just in case.

Ieuw! He can get a bad stomach ache and watery poo and he might have to puke. He wont die because of it. Just make sure you watch his hydration level. Do not give him anti diarriah medication. His body needs to eject all the stuff he just drank, to make sure he won't get seriously ill.

Give him some oral rehyration salt or just dextrose to keep his sugar level high enough. And give him water an crisps when he is one or when he gets dizzy.

I'll admit... I have had a bad mommy moment involving raunchy milk and I think mine was worse than yours. (My kid survived, so I'm confident yours will, too.)

DS was thirsty, so I pulled a sippy cup out of the diaper bag and handed it to him. It had been in there a few days, but water is water, right? Or...so I thought since I never put anything besides water in the sippy cup.

However, he'd been at my mom's a few days earlier and apparently she'd given him milk in his sippy. When I picked him up, I just gathered his stuff up and shoved it all in the bag.

He drank the "water" but kept saying "it's yucky. it's yucky." I kept assuring him it was fine, until I finally took a sip. Eeeeewww! It had been in the diaper bag for several DAYS. It was so separated it was like water and chunks.

But -- he and I both survived and didn't get sick at all. I think (hope) your son will be fine.

He said it tasted just fine! He knew better, though...I have told him never to leave milk out of the fridge for long. He was just excited when he got into the car, and hot and thirsty.

Almost three hours and no problems yet! :)

Thank you for the reassurances and advice. I still won't be totally worry free for another few days, though......

Don't worry - my pediatrician told me that no matter how bad the milk is, it won't make the kids sick if they drink it. I believe buttermilk used to be milk gone bad, back in the day.

I agree with the PPs- he should be fine. I ended up calling poision control once because my daughter drank milk that i later discovered was waaaaay past the expiration date, and they told me not to worry. The worst thing is that he will get an upset tummy. If you are still concerned you could give the doctor a call and see what they say.

How's the little guy doing? We've done that too... I'm shocked DD didn't puke. I think my stomach was more upset than hers, just knowing what she drank!

DS was perfectly fine. Never even compained of a tummy ache!

That's good to know that bad milk doesn't make you sick. Very gross, but good to know!

I think that the worst thing about bad milk is just the taste. Apparently, when I was an toddler, my parents got me a glass of milk at a restaurant that I just did not want to drink. Well, after really making me drink it, they tasted it, only to realize that it had gone bad. To this day, I will not drink milk, and I'm 40!

I'd say that if your son drank it without complaint, then there was nothing wrong with it.....maybe the heat was too much for anything to grow in it! :rotfl2:

Hope everything carried on OK for you - just think that milk + heat = yogurt.... we make our own which consists of putting milk + bacteria + heat for 12 hours, so a few hours won't be too bad... doesn't taste great without sugar and fruit, but hey - ho.... it's healthier that way - right ? ! :goodvibes

Oh, yuck! But as others have said (and you probably know since I guess enough time has passed since he drank it), it's just the gross factor more than the illness factor.

I wonder half the time about things we all end up eating/drinking without knowing. When we were in Blizzard Beach, we got hot dogs from the stand. A family was standing nearby while we ate, and they kept looking over. Then the mom came running over and pointed to my son's hot dog, and said, "Wait! Look!"

There was mold all over the bottom of the bun. Gross! I don't know how they saw that, but I really was grateful.
