Just an FYI

I got an email from Citibank today that indicated that in order to prevent Idenity Theft I needed to update my bank account info with them. Yes, and if you do you WILL be the victim!!!!

I clicked just out of curiosity.... It does take you to Citibank, but immediately imposes a popup screen which asks all kinds of creative info. They want you bank account number, SS# personal info and my fav, you ATM PIN NUMBER! YEAH RIGHT!

I have no realtionships with Citibank so this is just some mass mailing from someplace!

Don't click on the link if you get this email. The only way I could find to get rid of the popup screen was to reboot the PC!

With Windows, usually when you close a screen instead of just closing it, Windows sends that program a message that says "Close Yourself". This gives the malicious little bugger the opportunity to start another copy of itself first. Closing from the X, the taskbar, and the task list all work this way. Try Alt-F4. This is the best way to close a window, because Windows closes it directly.

Thanks for the Alt-F4 tip - didn't know that!!

A program I use to help identify these fraudulent emails is called SpoofStick. It is an add-on for IE or Mozilla that will identify the domain that you are connected to. This way, if you get mail that says it is from Citi but has a link that takes you elsewhere, it will tell you.

You can get it HERE.

I got one of those from Ebay last week wanting me to click on the link to give all my info--sent it to spoof@ebay.com (I think that was it) and sure enough, it was fraudulent.
They always say "if we don't get your info in 72 hours, we'll suspend your account". They can go ahead and do that(if it's ever legit), I won't give out my info over an EMail!

I've gotten three Citibank phishing e-mails at work, with the latest one this morning. When I tried to send it to the Information Security Officer at work and tried to add a comment on the forward, nothing appeared as I typed the message. It was freaky. Then I decided to check the color of the text and it was set to white on the white background. I highlighted what I had typed (or what I thought I had typed) changed the color of the font and it showed up this time. I made a note on the message to the ISO, so she would be able to pass this info on to our headquarters.

So if you forward the message, and try to type something at the top to report it to someone (and it doesn't show up), check to see what color the text is set to.

I got the very same one!!!!

I got one from Citibank as well.

I filled out the information with bogus (and foul!) information.

I got one from Sun Trust. Never heard of Sun Trust before. Paypal and ebay always say if they have an email to send to you they address you by name.

I just got one from Sun Trust too but I know someone who has a car loan with them but I don't.

I got that email 8 times in two days - and I have no dealings with Citibank..

I've gotten it twice at work. Remember you should NEVER go to the link b/c just doing that can cause problems as CarolA found out.

The REAL Citibank website tells you where to forward the e-mail and also gives the address to forward it to the federal government department that would investigate. Interestingly, when you forward the text goes away and becomes a red X.

I received one from Citibank yesterday, about updating email profile. I do deal with Citibank. It dealt with their ending sending emails to the attbi.com email addresses soon, as attbi became comcast last year. It gave me a link to change my email address in my profile with them. Sounds legit, as it does fit me. Still though, I entered the Citibank site by putting in the url myself, not their link. As it turned out, (I verified the link afterward) it was okay. But still, I always enter a site on my own, never a link in an email.

Every month, I get an email from MS to do my Windows updates. Even though I am expecting the email. I still enter through my way, not the email, too much a chance of phishing. Always be wary.

Thanks, Carol.
