Fp+ is all new to me. Last time we went it was still the FP system. We have never stayed on property. For our family of 5, it saves money and we can stretch out.....but I will not lie.....I am freaking out about planning and knowing that onsite friends will have booked FP+ 30 days before I can and for their entire trip...
Will I get anything 30 days out? Will I be able to get "hot" items like Mine Train, Anna/Elsa, Soarin, Toy Story? Thanks for helping a virgin out.

Thought about DVC but was told there is nothing available. Just decided to do the trip this weekend so we are already less than 6 months away. We have never been in December. new to that too :)

THANKS!

I had similar concerns. We are going for the week around 4th of July and our friends are staying on site, we are off site. I was pleasantly surprised that I got everything I wanted and I only had to adjust one ride time after the fact (the next day I moved it from before the parade until after the parade). We got 7DMT, Toy Story and Soarin but we did not need A&E so I can't speak for that. All of my worrying was for nothing, everything is working out just as I had hoped. I was ble to either match my friend on everything or just a little bit off but plenty of overlapping time that we can ride everything together.

A&E is difficult (but not impossible) to get at 30 days out. 7DMT will have limited availability. Everything else will be widely available.

The advantages of staying offsite are much greater than getting an extra 30 day jump on FP+

It also depends on when in December you are going. Earlier the better. Last December (first week) we booked at 60 days out and was unable to get A&E, but a wide variety of everything else. At 30 days I tried to change our FP+s but there was no availability for 7DMT. Everything else (except A&E) was still wide open (even onsite the day before).

Regardless of your FP+ situation, I'm confident you will really enjoy Disney in December. It's a great time to go. The Christmas decorations and celebrations are magnificent. The temperature is awesome (maybe a little cold for the pool depending on your preferences).

Be sure not to miss the Candlelight Processional, Osbourne Lights, and MVMCP (if your budget allows). It really makes for a magical Disney Christmas.

If you can't get them 30 days out, check daily and check DAY OF! I was able to get a SDMT for yesterday the night before at 10:00 for 5:00-6:00. Have also gotten Anna and Elsa to come up. Toy Story and Soarin I have gotten day of too. My trick has been checking while at the said park and checking.
