Funny how we've heard that everything is ok and MK & Epcot are open already....yet, Fox decides to try and spin the story a little bit. Check out these photos:

If you don't already know, Fox News Channel likes to blow things out of proportion just a bit. They do this for every "big" news story. Believe me, I know :rolleyes1

I got an email from Jeffrey at the Polynesian IPO at 3:18 EST p.m.:

"Well the hurricane is over, the rain at least, it just is windy, and Magic Kingdom and Epcot just opened."

Yeah... sounds like absolute devastation. What would we ever do without Fox to keep us up to date?

Boy, you just couldn't resist. In all fact, there most probably was damage at Disney World and Universal and Sea World. They were simply reporting that there was damage at the central Florida theme parks. That's it. They weren't tyring to spin the story or anything, simply reporting the facts. If you watched FNC or any other cable news channel, you would be seeing that they are covering the whole affected area (of which central Florida is a part of) and surveying damage.

Never did the headline say "absolute devastation." A little spin on your part, perhaps? All it said was "new video showing damage" at the theme parks, nothing else.

While I certainly won't say that it isn't "spin," wouldn't one tree blown down at WDW constitute "damage at Disney?"

I work with the media and these are just photos.. we have no idea what the reporter was saying and what else was shown.... this may have been a 2 second shot in a 45 minute report... and as we know these parks have been spared much damage in hurricanes in the past... perhaps there WAS some major damage at MGM.. disney wouldn't release that and they don't have to if nobody was hurt. Animal kingdom is likely to keep their birds/animals safe. I worked at a zoo and high winds had to bring the birds in (flamingos especially can literally snap in even normal high wind storms)... power outages also have to close zoos.. electric fencing is only run then on a generator and they just can't take the chance....

But that there was any damage at these parks IS news.. it doesn't happen often as Orlando is usually "safe ground".. it's where my family in southern florida goes when there are hurricanes ...
I'd hate to see 2 snapshots of a news report and assume things.. makes us just as bad as the so called spinners!

I always tell my grandkids that things are NOT as bad as reported. Bad news sells papers, get ratings etc. If we were apt to buy good news they would sell that to us. I have met the enemy and he is us. :teeth:

Even on these boards people tend to read the posts about bad cm's, meals etc. rather than the raves. The truth is often somewhere in between. We tend to notice the unusual. Is life, not perfect, but the reality. :confused3

Thanks for the update, but if everything is so "hunky-dorey," why isn't MGM open? (I can understand AK - animals and bad weather don't mix well -- but why is MGM closed? What's so different about it?)

I smell "cobbled-together-disaster-planning" here, ergo, Disney is being hindered by storm-related staff shortages and is "symbolically" opening up core parks (likely with skeleton crew staffing) to give the appearance of "normalcy".

Didn't mean to stir up a debate on this one. I am a loyal Fox News watcher but just thought the scene with Animal Kingdom and "Wilma Leaving a trail of destruction" was a tad misleading.

The reporter didn't go into specifics but mentioned that the parks had closed and there was damage done by the wind.

Let's just all be happy that this one wasn't as bad as some of the others. Thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who has been impacted by this or any of the other storms over the course of the last couple years.

Please note the sarcasm intended by tone.def's post. ;)

fox is heavily republican and they love to embellish danger.

I will not stoop to argue Fox's political leanings (although I will state they are left of mine), but I think it is all media's tendancy to embellish danger.

FYI... Disney had been saying since yesterday that they would only reopen MK and Epcot if weather permitted... they had always been saying that AK and MGM would remain closed as well as the water parks. So.. I suppose that for manpower reasons they decided that MGM and AK were not cost effective to open?? Who knows... but this decision was made Pre-storm according to all the posts of the cast member emails....

So.. with hope.. all is well and not too much damage to CM homes either... let us keep them all in our thoughts and prayers...

Plus, it could be a basic law of averages calculation - Disney wanted to open the two parks that attract the most people and hold the most visitors. They realize people have paid to be there and don't want to ruin vacations either - even if it is beyond their control.

So, I'd bet they just sent everyone they could to the two big parks and opened up for the loyal travellers. :)

As opposed to those kind and gentle Democrats who blame the weather on Republicans.

Think of it like this.. you know how doctors have to tell you the WORST CASE SCENERIO? they almost seem to overreact and scare the pants off of people? THey sure did with my sister when she was pregnant when something like gas they even have to give the possibility of it being a problem. I'm going through it currently with a problem I"m having.. the news has to do the same thing. SOME news I agree goes a bit overboard but I recall several years ago in Ohio there were some issues because the news didn't report the seriousness of a tornado that ended up devastating a community.. since then they interrupt programs like crazy... and warn of all possibilities.. it was a very distinctive change in the weather reporting techniques here in cleveland.

On the other hand some things... like katrina and just how bad it was... and just how bad it continues to be... and some of the things that went on wiht authorities and animals .. were never reported. I heard it from friends who LIVE there... some things need to be exposed but are not... I would, however, rather them overstate potential danger than understate it!

Oh nevermind it is just fox news. They must have watched the Chicken Little movie and confused it with reality. :rotfl2:
