.....I'm assuming Samuel Langhorne Clemens, aka, Mark Twain, author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Right?

So why is it misspelled?

You are correct.
And, the odd misspelling has long been noted as such.
No explanation has ever been given.
 
And there in the Fort resides the most "private" Restrooms in all of Magic Kingdom!:)
 

Maybe it's in line with the bad English and backwards s's on the signs

Probably because it was done by Tom Sawyer (or maybe Huck Finn?), who was just a kid and not good at spelling. That's my guess, anyway!
