tell me about your experiences with formal nights.. formal gowns, nice church dresses, tuxedos what do you prefer

DH and I 'felt' underdressed the first cruise because we wore 'casual' clothes formal/semi-formal nights. We'd never cruised before, and weren't sure how 'dressed' people were. He wore a sports coat and tie, and I had a floor-length cotton-knit jersey dress. DD (age 7) wore a church dress.

The second year we were much better prepared w/DH wearing a black suit and myself in a black cocktail dress for semi-formal and formal.

This year was our favorite! DH brought a tux and DD and I floor-length formals. Though 'dressing up' is not a requirement on DCL, for us it's one of the events our family looks forward to. It made for some great portraits too!

My DD and I always wear full length evening dresses on formal night. This year she bought a very pretty cocktail dress for semi-formal night, but I have another full length dress I am wearing. It is my only chance to dress up like a grown up!

My husband has always just brought his dark gray suit and dress shirts, dress shoes and ties. This year, however, I am thinking of surprising him with a tux rental because I know he will look super and I haven't seen him in one since our wedding (and since we are celebrating number 26 on this cruise, that would be nice).

Of course, tropical night was khakis, tropical dresses and shirts and sandals.

The other nights, my DH wore very nice sport shirts and slacks, my daughter and I wore short sun dresses or nice pantsuits.

I and DS wear slacks, dress shirts and ties. DW and DD wear dresses (nothing fancy). And I've never felt out of place. This is what the guys at my table were wearing on one of our cruises: Tux, Suit, Sport Coat, dress shirt and tie (me and another gentleman). And we all still had a great time!! And none of the families knew each other before the cruise. We usually hung out in the clubs together after dinner (the kids went to their clubs).
