I know suit jackets are required for formal night, are they also required for kids (14-year-old and 15-year-old son)?

Actually, suit jackets are not required in any of the main dining rooms on any night. It is purely your choice to go 'formal' or not. And you will see all levels of attire that night...it's totally up to your family to decide how 'dressed up' you'd like to be.

Not required at all. You'll find a lot of people really look nice on formal night. The atrium somehow has the feel of classic cruising with the music, people dressed up nicely taking pictures, officers in dress uniform circulating...it is really a wonderful experience.

You will still see plenty who do not participate, though. Disney suggests a nice dress code, but doesn't enforce it in any manner whatsoever. You'll even see shorts and t-shirts on formal night.

When my twins were 12 I used ebay to purchase inexpensive (but very nice) tuxes...the formal night photos are priceless...it was an easy solution for what to wear...

My son was 11 and 13 on previous cruises. He wore a shirt and tie for the first and a suit for the second - but only because he already had a suit for a few celebrations that had happened that year. This year (he's now 16) I'm going back to shirt and tie - and instead of dress slacks I'm allowing chinos or black jeans - I don't want to buy a pair of pants that he has no other reason to wear. He doesn't have any nice shoes and I'm trying to decide if I want to buy a pair for him or not... I'm leaning towards not. There were lots of people there for formal night in all levels of dressiness. I'm taking it down a notch myself. It's just easier to not have to pack the fancier dress/shoes.

We are going to eat in cabanas on formal night. None of the guys want to dress up so we'll get to try a new restaurant that night!

That is a nice gesture. Not required, since Disney doesn't enforce any formal dress code, but shows a thoughtfulness for those who do want to immerse themselves in a formal setting!

You will really enjoy Cabanas for the dinner meal. Really different from the lunch buffet, quite easygoing, no schedule for you or the servers to meet, an ocean view, it's really fun.

Don't skip a MDR on formal night just because they don't want to dress up.

On 7-night cruises:

  • First night is cruise casual—no swimwear or tank tops
  • One pirate or other themed night (deck party)
  • 3 additional cruise casual nights—no swimwear or tank tops
  • One formal and one semi-formal night—two great opportunities to dress-up and take advantage of the onboard photography services. Though optional, we recommend for men: dress pants with a jacket or a suit; for women: a dress or pantsuit.
