we have a question we recently read the men should not wear ties with short sleve dress shirts even with sports coats ties should ony be worn with long slseve dress shirts can anyone help us with the answer ty Mike

(I worked in a Men's formal wear shop many, many, many moons ago :) )

Proper dress etiquitte does indeed call for ties to only be worn with long sleeve men's dress shirts. A short sleeve shirt is considered too "casual" for a tie or a suit jacket for that matter.

My personal opinion is that a short sleeved dress shirt with a suit jacket would look ridiculous (the sleeves of a proper fitting dress shirt should come out just to the bottom of the jacket sleeves)

I have seen men wear ties with short sleeve dress shirtsf before though (while rare.)

However, having said all of that--to each his own on what he decides to wear. I say ettiquitte or not, wear what you are comfortable with.

I hate short sleeve dress shirts. My personal opinion.

Frankly as long as the jacket is kept on, I guess it wouldn't much matter much--it's certainly better than short sleeves without a jacket. But if the jacket will be taken off, wear long sleeves. Short sleeves on a "dress shirt" is certainly not formal. The dining rooms are air conditioned, so weather shouldn't be a factor.

SueEllen, you forgot the major exception to this rule. A short sleeved shirt and tie are proper formal wear if worn with a pocket protector and horn-rimmed glasses by an engineer or a scientist.;)

I whole-heartedly agree for men! However, my teen ds looks very handsome in a short-sleeved, stylish blue shirt (small checks) with a solid blue tie tucked into cream-colored dress pants.

LOL! My engineer husband would probably try to get away with it if he thought that I wouldn't see him! When we first met--oy! You've never seen a guy who needed "Queer Eye" so much in his life! ROFL!! All this time later I still catch him falling into some old habits now and then :)

Mike, two words - Dilbert. Well okay, it's only one word, but you get the point. :jester: But the Mickey ties = :cool2:

Barbara, don't you let that boy wear that tie with that short-sleeved shirt. Bad mommy, bad!

Theres one way to resolve this issue. Never wear a tie. Most (not all) men find this item to be a torture device (sort of like a womans girdle). I noticed a trend in the late 80's , early 90's when woman started wearing ties as well. Boy that fad faded quickly - I wonder why. But I do agree, short sleeve shirt - No tie. - Mike

There's no such thing as a short sleeved dress shirt. :D

short sleeves = NOT dressy
