Forget Rock the Mall, We're Rockin' Epcot! The Girl Scout centennial, Disney style

With 30 days left on the countdown and the anticipation starting to really make me crazy, I decided to do what any self-respecting DISboards addict would do... Start a new pre-trippie!

This trip came out of thin air, and I've put it together on a shoestring and a stroke of luck. I really didn't start getting excited about it until we had our airfare and our tickets booked because I wasn't sure I'd get the money together in time.

I don't even remember exactly when or how I stumbled onto Disney's Bridging Into the Next Century Girl Scout event. Sometime in December, I guess, because it was after we booked our airfare for January but before the trip itself. Otherwise I'd probably just have rescheduled for May rather than trying to save up to go back just 4 months later! But since that trip was carved in stone, a challenge was born...

Could I - a SAHM with only a very sporadic income from a couple of hobbies - save up the $1200 it would take for me and DD10 to make it back to Florida in May? Of course I could!

Meet the star of the show...

DD10, aka Pocahontas in my trip reports, has basically grown up Disney. When she was very small we didn't have the money to go, but all it took was that first "once in a lifetime" trip for us to be hooked.

She was 4 on our first trip, when Disney effectively managed to get their hands on every penny of a small inheritance we'd received by offering free dining for the first time. It was September, it was hot, we had no idea how to use Fastpasses... And we still had such a great time that a new family tradition was born.

Our next trip was two years later, when a 40% off PIN code landed in my mother's e-mail, luring her into booking a short trip as a birthday gift to Pocahontas. She spent the first few minutes of her 6th birthday on Dumbo at the tail end of a Pirate & Princess Party, and still says that was the best birthday ever.

The birthday trip was merely a diversion, though. At the same time I was planning our big family return to WDW, 11 nights at the Wilderness Lodge over my son's January birthday. The birthday boy wasn't the only one who got a special surprise, though. Pocahontas got to experience the handiwork of a fairy godmother first-hand at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique while DH and DS were off on a Splash/Thunder ride marathon.

2009's trip came after way too long a break from the House of Mouse but it was with good cause; a new baby and a new house kept us pretty busy in between. Pocahontas loved her first trip as a big sister!

Our March 2011 trip was another first - a girls' only adventure for the Flower & Garden Festival. Neither DH nor DS had any interest, and neither of them could get away from work/school/sports, so we left them home and jetted off to Florida with my mom for a few days of flowers, sunshine, and a little spring training baseball.

That brings us to 2012 and another first - Pocahontas first experience with Disney's Youth Education Series, which was a stunning success. We attended a presentation by Kingdom Keepers author Ridley Pearson and DH took her to the Ocean Discoveries class in the Seas pavilion. She enjoyed the experience so much that she wants us to plan all our future trips around YES classes.

At home, Pocahontas is one of those kids that is involved in everything - from school plays to 4H and a different sport for each season - but Girl Scouts is her favorite. She's in a great troop that has been together with the same leadership since 1st grade, and this year they earned their Bronze award. Travel costs are just too much for our troop to go to either the Disney Bridging into the Next Century event or to Rock the Mall in DC, but I told Pocahontas that if she worked with me to save up the money I would take her to one or the other. She chose Disney, and she has been a great help in making it happen!

And then there's the rest of the cast...

Originally this trip was supposed to be just me and Pocahontas, but life has a way of changing my travel plans for me and this was no exception.

So first, there's me - 30-something SAHM, "office girl" for my husband's business, and all around creative type. I love making the girls outfits for our trips, and I spend most of my free time either at my sewing machine, in my gardens, or on the DIS.

2861672800051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

Then, the late additions...

My husband decided earlier this month to put his handyman/home improvement business on the shelf for a while when he got a job offer too good to pass up, so my plan of leaving Boo home was suddenly in shambles. I'd been feeling a little guilty about going without her anyway - her first trip was in the womb and she's been a Disney baby since the day she was born. So I decided she'd just have to come along for the ride.

2796043220051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

Bringing Boo presented one problem, though. We're taking the event exclusive "Many Cultures, One World" YES class on Memorial Day and Boo can't tag along for that. Enter my mother. She couldn't afford to take my brother and I to Disney as kids and she's making up for that with her grandkids. This will be her 5th trip to WDW with us! Somehow I can't seem to find a picture of her from any of them, though... She's even more camera-shy than I am, I guess! :rotfl:

So once again it is a girls' trip, which is such fun for me to plan because everyone is just happy to follow my lead. None of that "But I want to sleep in on vacation" or "Let's just hang out by the pool and relax" from DH and DS14! ;) My girls are as commando as I am and my mom is fine with keeping up with us most of the time and taking breaks without us if it gets to be too much.

I'm in! Looks like our trips will overlap!

So glad you are going to be able to go on this trip. :) I had read some of your posts on other threads, and I remember that at first you were a little "iffy" as to whether the trip would happen!

:welcome:

This trip was still a maybe up until about 2 weeks ago. Travel is a big priority for my family but our budget for the year was already fully accounted for; we just took the whole family to WDW in January and we've got two other must-do trips coming up. A few years ago I did something crazy and agreed to balance Disney and non-Disney travels so changing the other plans wasn't an option, not that I would have anyway - one trip is for a museum touring exhibit my son wants to see and the other is a weekend away with just DH for our 10th anniversary in the fall. So being able to do this trip was entirely dependent on whether or not I could earn/save the money for it myself, and that took some doing.

Fortunately I stumbled onto a local Facebook swap group for my area that is basically a perpetual online garage sale, and between that and selling some of my girls' outgrown Disney customs I got it done. :goodvibes Well, DH is covering the $300ish that taking Boo added to the trip cost since he's not available to keep her home as we'd originally planned. He's not as big a Disney fan as I am, but he's a great enabler! :thumbsup2

May 26 -

We're flying in late. Not as late as the 11pm arrival that caused no end of headaches on our last trip but I did book an evening flight. Mostly because it was cheaper, but it is also easier since we're leaving my van home for DH. My mom is picking us up so she'll have 45 min to get here, then we've got a 2 hour drive to the airport, and we allow 2 hours to clear security and get to our gate. All of that is easy with a 5pm flight but exhausting when we book for a morning departure!

2498832310051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

We fly out of Detroit Metro, but we won't get the wanna-be monorail experience this time because we're flying out of the smaller terminal. I prefer this over the main terminal so when Airtran offered a decent fare I jumped at it. Every time we fly Airtran I tell myself we'll stop to grab something from Earl of Sandwich in the terminal but we never do. Maybe this time, since we're flying out around dinner time, we'll remember!

Boo has no idea where we're going, only that we're going to be taking Pocahontas to a Girl Scout event. I haven't decided how or when to tell her, but I'm thinking maybe we'll just head for the Magical Express bus and see how long it takes her to figure it out. :rotfl:

(Photo borrowed from Allears.net)

With such a late arrival we're not doing anything but checking in once we arrive. We're going to be at All Star Sports for the first time. It isn't my top choice, but it was the value option for the Girl Scout rate and I wanted to be at the group hotel for the early morning transportation to the event.

I'm sure we'll swim a bit. We won't have good swimming weather at home until mid-June at least so pool time is always a highlight of our Disney trips. Even in January they swam more days than not.

2644841590051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

Since this is our first trip without a dining plan, I'm looking forward to hitting a few highlights of non-participating restaurants. So for our first night at WDW we're not planning on a Disney restaurant for dinner. We're ordering pizza from the highly-recommended Giordanos. Then it will be off to bed to prepare for a very busy day!

We'll start the day at Epcot for the Bridging into the Next Century ceremony. I think I'm looking forward to this as much as Pocahontas! I can't wait to see what Disney has planned. The event starts at 8 and appears to be scheduled for about 2 hours, followed by some character meet & greet opportunities and other associated events. I didn't book the breakfast add-on, so I figure we'll probably wrap up the Girl Scout part of the day around the time World Showcase is opening.

2211196860051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

The only real priority at Epcot after the event is Soarin'. I'm hoping the fastpass return isn't too ridiculously late by the time we get back to the front of the park, because ideally I'd grab FPs, ride Living With the Land, have a bite to eat at Sunshine Seasons, and then ride Soarin'. If the return time is too late in the day, however, we'll just ride standby.

2947955730051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

We'll probably also have to stop in at Boo's favorite ride because I don't think she's ever passed by without riding. She absolutely adores Figment and knows almost every word to "One Little Spark". :cutie:

Then we'll head back to ASSp to rest for a while. I hope I can get the girls to nap or at least lay down for a bit, and I'm bringing the TV cable for our iPod to help with that - The Muppets on the TV and the curtains drawn will hopefully do the trick! We don't normally take midday breaks but we have a very late night ahead.

2560903030051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

Dinner is at my personal favorite Disney restaurant, California Grill. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've dreamt of their sushi, and since this happens to be my birthday as well as Pocahontas' Girl Scout event I decided to splurge. I might even order myself a custom cake.

2518675360051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

After dinner, it is off to the Magic Kingdom for some evening EMH fun. Right now the park is scheduled to close at 10 with EMH until 1am, but I'm hoping when the update comes out that will change to 3am. I absolutely love the Magic Kingdom after midnight, and since Boo is a great stroller-sleeper we've gotten to enjoy some really late nights with her. On our March trip she slept from about 11 to 1, then woke up for the last two hours of walking on all the Fantasyland classics. :hyper:

I'm sure by the time we get back to the room we'll all be asleep before our heads hit the pillows.

May 28 -

My mom and Boo get to sleep in, but Pocahontas and I are off on another early start. Thank goodness the kid is as commando as I am!

2972913910051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

We're booked for the "Many Cultures, One World" class that is an add-on to the Bridging event, so once again we're starting our day at Epcot. Check-in for the class starts just after rope drop and the class itself runs from 10 to 11:30, so once again we'll be finishing up around the time the World Showcase opens. I expect that by then, Boo will be up and we'll be able to catch up with them at Journey into Imagination or the Seas. Once again we're only spending a little time at Epcot, with the Seas and Spaceship Earth as our main priorities. Then we'll be hopping away again...

2903780390051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

We have reservations for lunch at Yak & Yeti, thanks to my Landry's Select Club birthday reward. From there we'll spend the afternoon exploring Animal Kingdom a bit. Boo is finally tall enough for Kali and Pocahontas loves Everest. AK isn't the greatest park when it is hot, though, and my mom has a hard time with the uneven, faux-natural pathways so I don't expect we'll stay all that long.

2853235110051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

The rest of the afternoon and evening will be over at Studios. I don't plan on hitting the headliners, but the non-headline attractions, shows, and characters always fill quite a bit of time. Top priority is the Disney Junior dance party, which is only held on evening EMH nights and which we've planned on attending but ended up skipping on the last two trips. I'd also like to catch Fantasmic if a second showing is added. Right now, the park hours list a 9pm close, evening EMH, and only one F!, but I'm hoping for an hour and a second show added to that.

When we get hungry we'll pop over to Kimonos for dinner. Sushi two nights in a row is dream vacation territory for me! :cloud9: I've been dying to try it, but between having a dining plan and the fact that DH is allergic to fish we've just never gotten over there.

May 29 -

A day with almost no plan! :faint:

2169308470051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

Unless we find freakishly short wait times during Studios EMH we'll probably start the day right back there, just for a couple hours to ride Toy Story Mania, Tower of Terror, and Rock & Roller Coaster. Studios is my least favorite park and I don't plan on staying long, but I would like to hit the highlights. On our last trip I popped over there solo at rope drop and was able to ride both thrillers, do a little shopping, and be back on a bus to Pop by 9:30, so I'm hoping to be done by 10:30 or so even with the kids along. My mom doesn't ride anything more extreme than the Tea Cups, so she and Boo will join us for Toy Story Mania and then head to Starring Rolls for some goodies while Pocahontas & I hit the scary stuff.

2155911900051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

After Studios, we'll most likely boat over to Epcot. Pocahontas discovered a candy in the Mitsukoshi store that she just loved, and since she's a summer birthday her day to bring in a treat will be in June so she wants to pick up enough for her whole class. We'll take our time exploring Epcot for the rest of the morning and early afternoon.

2797080700051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

For a late lunch, I booked the Garden View Tea. This is something we've talked about doing for years but never seem to fit in on our dining plan trips, so this seems like the perfect time to try it! Not having the boys along is nice too, because I don't think either DH or DS14 would be all that impressed by high tea.

After tea I really have no idea where we'll end up. The Magic Kingdom is open until 10pm and Epcot has evening EMH until midnight, so we'll just hit whichever we feel like. Epcot is probably the more likely of the two only because this would be the one night that we could catch Illuminations, but we're taking the Kingdom Keepers Quest packet that Pocahontas got on our January trip so she might want the extra MK time to do the scavenger hunt instead.

May 30 -

Departure day. :sad1: On paper this trip just seems so short, but I'm sure the girls will be ready to get home. Our last girls only trip was a night too long, and by the 5th day they were really missing DH. They're both total daddy's girls and aren't used to being away from him for more than a night or two. princess: I'm sure I'll be missing him too; this will only be the 2nd time in 13+ years that we've been apart for longer than a weekend and even though I love the one-on-one (or two) trips with my kids I don't sleep well without him. I've found that's an upside to traveling without him - happy to be heading home distracts from being sad to leave Disney.

Our flight is at 3, so we won't have time to do much other than swim in the morning before our Magical Express pick up. That's fine by me; I never make plans for our departure days, even with a later flight, because it just feels like we spend the day rushing and watching the clock. So we'll soak up some sun, shower, and head off to the airport to come back to reality.

Joining in. You wouldn't happen to be selling P's dress (black sundress that has a minnie look to it)?

Just finished reading your January TR and hopped over here.:thumbsup2 I am sooooo jealous of your girl scout trip.:worried: I wanted to take DD for her brownie-junior bridging but it just wasn't in the budget with our cruise this summer.:( We possibly could have done it as long as it was only DD and I, but that idea went over like a lead balloon. DH, DS, and DD(4) were appalled to think that we would ever consider going to WDW without them.:scared1: It's the same reaction DH and I get whenever we talk about going to WDW for an adults only trip during F&W.

Your plans sound great and I can't wait to hear about the bridging.:hyper:

:welcome:

I'm not sure if or when I'll sell that one. P still wears it, not just to Disney but at home and to school, and it has faded some. She already told me I have to pack it for May. After I take inventory of my fabric stash I might end up listing a new, sized-to-order copy of it on Etsy, but that won't be until summer.

I'm so jealous of your cruise! :rolleyes1 It seems like that's the trip we just keep putting off... first until Boo was potty trained, now until she gets a bit bigger because she's fascinated by the Aquaduck but probably 2 years away from being tall enough to ride it.

I was seriously planning to sneak off and not tell Boo where we were going when I thought I'd be leaving her home, because she is absolutely horrified at the idea that I could ever go to WDW without her. DH is so wrapped around her little finger that he doesn't want to take an adults-only trip until she's outgrown her Disney phase a little. I'm not entirely sure she's ever going to outgrow it... :cutie:

Sounds as if we'll be in the same parks for a few days---We're going to Epcot on Monday and the Studios that Tuesday. Maybe we'll run into each other! :)

If you happen to spot us, say hi! My girls are usually pretty easy to spot in the parks... I'll be posting their outfits for this trip shortly. :goodvibes

So, it wouldn't be a Disney trip without special outfits for my girls and this is no exception. There is one oddity this time, though - we have so many Disney outfits already that I'm only making one new thing for each of them!

For the flight down I'm not putting the girls in matching outfits, simply because Boo still doesn't know we're going and I don't want to tip her off. So they're both wearing Disney outfits but nothing I made specifically for the parks.

Boo's Minnie Mouse sundress:

Pocahontas will wear her Candace shirt and jeans:
2839047410051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

For Sunday and the Girl Scout event, Pocahontas made it very clear that she wants to wear the outfit I made her for camp last summer:

2207780020051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

So Boo is going to wear one of her favorites, since they won't match anyway. Figment, of course:

2006330350051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

Monday the girls will match for sure, in outfits that remain among their favorites even though they're a year old now:

2258828800051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

Tuesday is the day I'm sewing for - we're having tea at the Grand Floridian, so of course the girls need Alice in Wonderland inspired outfits! Neither girl has any interest in Alice, though. I'm working on a really fun idea for a Mad Hatter-esque sundress for Pocahontas and a Queen of Hearts sundress for Boo. I just got the last of the fabrics I wanted for the first one today, so I'll probably have pics of the finished product sometime next week.

Wednesday is our flight home and we're just going to spend the day lounging poolside, so my only concern is something comfortable. They'll probably wear their Mickey jammies home:

2927534690051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

I bought Claire a Mad Hatter costume to wear on our cruise and for the wonderland tea party and my niece a queen of hearts dress. I can't wait to see that you come up with.

Disney posted something on Facebook that I just have to have for Boo, who has developed quite a little addiction to Angry Birds on P's iPod Touch...

So, any ideas where in the parks I'd find this?

We're so busy right now with baseball season and the 5th grade farewell festivities that I've hardly had time to think about Disney! It is so weird... I haven't even changed our ADRs. :rotfl2: This may be the most boring PTR ever.

I did get us checked in online this morning, and requested Touchdown or Home Run Hotel sections though I don't really have that strong a preference. I'd just like to be closer to the baseball pool because I know that's where Pocahontas, my little 3rd baseman, is going to want to be.

Also, the late May hours update came out and was exactly what Josh at EasyWDW predicted and I'd been hoping for, so the park plans are pretty well set. Normally I'd be working on touring plans by now but I don't think I'm going to do them this time. Between the two special event mornings and basically leaving our last day open to just go with the flow there's just not that much I can plan.

And on a completely unrelated note but something I'm almost as excited about as I am the trip, I got tickets to take Pocahontas to her first real concert this summer - Jimmy Buffet at Comerica Park! I didn't spring for good seats - the cheap ones came to over $100 for two :faint: - but we're front row of the upper deck so I know Pocahontas won't be stuck looking at the back of some tall guy in front of her or anything like that. ;)

Coming soon: pics of the swaps we're making for the Girl Scout events and of the Mad Hatter dress that with a little luck should be finished by the end of the week.

10 days to go... and in that time we have 4 baseball games, field day, the end-of-the-year party with our Girl Scout troop, and my mother's birthday. Time should just fly by! :hyper:

After one very long weekend, I can finally concentrate on the last of the packing and crafting for WDW!

Pocahontas had her very first softball tournament this weekend. Her team is Little League/everyone plays and the girls range in age from 9 to 12 so they were seriously outmatched by the competition. We were the only non-tryouts/non-cut team there! We were also the youngest by far; the team that won the tournament was all 12yos and had a couple of girls who were taller than my 5'7"! But the girls had a blast and learned a lot. Our coach is really pushing out (sort of backwards, small town, sexist) LL board to create a tryouts/competition team for the girls like they have for the boys in the U12 age division, and she wanted the girls to get a taste of fastpitch softball.

2577219220051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

It was an exhausting weekend - 4 games and 12 hours at the field on Saturday and 1 game and about 3 hours on Sunday, plus the hour's drive each way to get there and back. Boo stayed with her Nana and Papa for the weekend so I could be at the field for the whole event, and it really was a good time despite being really tiring, frustrating for the girls at times, and the hottest weather we've had this year.

P now wants to try out for the travel team in our area - a year round commitment with both spring & fall seasons that I've been trying to put off. She's a talented player and she'll need a year or two at the tougher level to get ready for high school ball, but I was hoping to keep her in the more casual program for another year at least. These kids and their activities are seriously starting to cramp my travel style! :rotfl:

I did manage to get a few trip-related to-dos checked off, though.

This will be on our door at ASSp for other girls to leave notes. It is a dollar store magnetic dry-erase board that P decorated with some Scout-themed foamies stickers.

2778812600051332420S500x500Q85.jpg

And we finally have our swaps done. Our council, troop, and city are written on the back. The pins will go through the eyelets.
