I had a question for you all! Is there ever a point in your marriage where you take your engagement ring off, and just wear the wedding band? In my family, my grandmother, and mother only wore their wedding bands...I never saw an engagement ring. What do you think? Do people wear them for life? Or is there a certain point where people think, "yes...we know you were engaged once...now take that ring off...you've been married forever!" :confused3

I've also heard of people just using their engagement ring as the wedding band rather then spending the money on another ring. My friend is doing this for her wedding in two weeks.

Personally, my rings are a set so I plan to always wear my engagement ring with the wedding band. My wedding ring would look really silly if I was to wear it on its own.

I think engagement rings usually tend to be the more expensive of the two rings with the bigger diamond so girls tend to want to wear them. The wedding band is usually found to compliment the engagement ring.

I agree with Chantelle with why most girls continue to wear their engagement rings. Plus, if it's a set, like Chantelle's, it would be sort of silly to break it. However...! My engagement ring was more of a token really (I'm the one with the purple amethysts set in the shape of a Mickey head!). It wouldn't go with any wedding band anywhere, so we just got me a simple wedding band and have been wearing my engagement ring on my right hand.

Unfortunately, it's gotten pretty banged up with just regular wear so I may eventually retire it and just wear the ring. Then I'd be just like your family! I think it really comes down to what each ring means to you...

I plan on retiring my engagement ring at some point for several reasons: It doesn't fit next to my wedding band; I don't really like wearing rings, so I'd like to keep it to one; and DF didn't pick out my ring, I did, so I have less sentimental attachment to it - I won't be offended if I retire it! :rotfl:

Well, I'm still wearing my engagement ring and I've been married for over 23 years now! I plan on wearing it forever, DH and I chose it together 25 years ago and he would wonder what was going on it I stopped wearing it  Not that I want stop wearing it - I still love it!

My mother has always worn her engagement ring as well as her wedding band. DH's mother has only worn her wedding band as long as he can remember.

DH bought me by dream engagement ring in hopes that I would wear it forever as he always found it sad his mom doesn't wear hers. We actually plan on replacing my wedding band at some point, (I'm hoping for our 5th anniversary, but it'll probably be more like the 10th) because when it came time to buy my band, we had more practical things to spend money on so we opted to buy a cheaper band and replace it later - it just doesn't do my beautiful e-ring justice :)

I plan on wearing my e ring forever. It is just such a huge investiment and I want to always remember him asking me to be his wife.

We have been married for > 8 yrs now and I am still wearing my engagement ring (in addition to wedding band) and I can not imagine not wearing it!!

I had my engagement ring sautered to my wedding band so they are actually 1 ring.

We're having my wedding ring designed to match my engagement ring. My e-ring has a beautiful sapphire (my favorite!) I couldn't bear to not wear it everyday. It does all come down to personal preference :goodvibes

From a few people I spoke with, it does come down to personal preference. Sometimes it's easier to wear a lower profile ring like a wedding band because it's more casual and doesn't get caught on everything.

Some people also don't feel comfortable wearing expensive jewelry out. They're either afraid of losing something so precious or having it stolen.

I hope to wear mine forever, too, but sometimes our opinions change when we get older. :goodvibes

I've worn my engagement ring and wedding band together for 24 years, I still love them like I got them yesterday. We're getting new rings for our 25th VR next year. It's a tradition on both sides of our family to have new rings at 25 and 50 years. I haven't selected anything yet.

My wedding band is actually a wrap that fits around my solitaire e-ring. It makes it look like only one ring. I love it :) and I plan on wearing it for as long as possible :-D

I don't wear my e ring at certain times, primarily when I'm at the barn and riding my horse. I just wear my wedding band at those times. Also this time of year with the humidity it gets really tight so some days I don't wear my rings. I'm even putting them in my Mom's safety deposit box when we go to Disney later this week because it's going to be so hot and humid I'll never be able to get them off and my finger sometimes breaks out under the rings when it gets like that.

Here's a possibility as to why your mom and grandmother don't wear their e-rings. (I used to work in jewelry, so you learn all sorts of useless information)

Buying large diamond engagement rings (over 1/2ct) is a relatively new thing in the wedding world. DeBeers has done a great job of marketing that you have to get an engagement ring, and it has to be a diamond. Before that people didn't always do engagment rings or they weren't necessarily large diamonds. If they had one and it got damaged or something, they'd stop wearing them because it wasn't a huge investment anyway. My mom never wore hers because it was a pretty small diamond and when the prongs were damaged, she put it away to get it repaired, and never bothered.
Now that people spend so much more money on e rings and so much more empahsis is put on them, people tend to wear them longer.

I'm still wearing mine after 4 years of marriage. My wedding band "fits" into my e-ring and shortly after our wedding the 2 were sauddered (sp?) together.
