We were in a pet store yesterday visiting the gerbils and my DD12 struck up a conversation with the owner, just small talk. DD noticed a group of young babies and commented,"they're too young to be here." The owner immediately took offense and shouted,"No,they're not, they're 6wks old!" Now DD12 has been raising gerbils for 7 years and she knows quite a lot about them. Not to mention that we currently have two litters, one 6wks and one 3wks(note to self: get gerbils spayed). Perhaps whoever gave them to the pet store owner TOLD her they were 6wks old, but they were not. DD12 didn't argue with her.
Then the store owner went on to expound on all the "trouble" she has with gerbils--that they start fighting at 6months and will attack other colors. Like I said, we have raised gerbils for a long time and we've never had that experience. In fact, our old mother is now 2-1/2 and she is the sweetest thing. Several of ours have lived to 2-3yrs and never have they fought over color.
So, in your experience, have you seen this? I'm not at all confident that this woman knows what she's talking about. I know that gerbils from different litters will fight, but it's not about color, it's community. No racist gerbils
