For those with big / frizzy hair, has this ever happened to you?

I get my hair colored every eight weeks or so (I keep it very close to my natural shade so that roots don't show). For some odd reason, this has actually made my hair healthier and helped to tame the frizz!?! Anyway, I get it cut every time I get it colored. :hourglass

My hair is rediculously thick and frizzy. I HAVE to keep it short (even though I think it makes me look like a 12 year old boy) because it is just nasty (like a big ole' pile of snakes) when it gets long, besides being difficult to care for and very heavy. :crazy2:

I have pretty much given up on the hair. I just let it do what it wants because I can spend an hour on it and make it perfect and in an hour or less (depending on the humidity) it will be just as bad as before. I try to tell the stylists at EVERY SINGLE PLACE I EVER GET MY HAIR CUT this, but none of them want to listen. Fine, I don't care as long as it dosen't cost me extra. I just know they are wasting their time. :confused3

What I really hate, though, is when they decide they have to do everything in their power to make my hair BIGGER! :furious: Hello, it is not the 80s anymore! The last time I had my hair done, the stylist actually put root lifter on me! (My roots lift all on their own, usually at least an inch and a half to two inches, seriously) My hair was rediculously huge! :chewy: She kept saying (and this has happened so many times it isn't funny anymore) that my hair was the thickest hair she had ever seen and she wished she could have hair just like it! Whatever! When they get done poufing (which I am careful to very politely ask them NOT to do) they always say, oh it has a lot of volume, dosen't it? Sorry, but DUH!

So, does this happen to anyone else, or am I the only one continuously accosted by the volumizer fairy?

I have very curly, frizzy hair as well. However, by the sound of it, I don't have as thick of hair even though at times it looks like I do.

Just curious - have you tried using a Chi straightening iron on your hair? I've tried other straightening irons and nothing did the trick but the Chi iron really helps during these hot, muggy months. I've been pleasantly surprised.

As for the volume thing...nah - I don't really have that problem around here. I almost have the opposite effect - trying to make it too flat. I want straighter hair at times - just not flat against my head. I want a little poof, not a lot, though. If I let my hair go natural (frizzy, curly) it tends to poof up too much. :crazy2:

I have long, curly, thick, frizzy hair. But I love it. I can do anythign with it. You just have to learn how to care for it. I'd try some Ion products (white bottle pink writing, can get it at sally's cheap.) Aussie Shampoo + conditioner (moist) and an Ion straightner. let it air dry when you wash it, don't blow dry it. maybe some gel (no preferance) while its still wet to tame it down. If you let it grow out, it'll be less curly.

best of luck.

I think Big Hair is making a comeback. They put mousse in my hair today and floofed it all up.

As a child of the 80s, I'm glad. :)

I have a really dumb question about the Chi Flat Iron -- how long does it take for you to do your whole head (average) and when is the next time you shampoo?? It seems like an awful lot of work to do to just have to wash it the next day and repeat again. Can you go more than just one day?

I now have big frizzy hair. I didn't always have this hair but my last 2 pregnancies have done something to my hormones. The other day I let my hair air dry and I had this curly, unruly, frizzy big hair! I have spent hundred of $$$ on products and irons and blow driers, even bought the flat iron etc...etc... I have tried the ion products that Sparx mentioned and they helped a bit but in a few hours time....frizzzzzz!!!!!!!!

I just moved so I was looking for a new stylist. He offered to me about 4 different conditioners! I just laughed (bought them, dope that I am but I laughed while doing it.) I'll try anything! When he dries my hair he has to do it in sections, pulling it straight. I tried it but my arm gets tired after about 30 mins of drying each section of hair!!

I was so happy to move to Ca. and to leave the humidity behind in Fl. but my hair is still just as bad! :furious:

(thanks for letting me vent! lol)

I have/ had the same hair as you.
My solution: get a perm. Then at least I have nice curls, instead of just the frizzy hair that makes me look like a miserable sheep (now, I look like a normal sheep, which is better) When it's very humid, it still frizzes, but not as bad as before.

Colour my hair. For some reason, it helps.

Everytime I go to the hairdresser, she cuts about 1/3 out of the volume. Don't ask me HOW she does that, but she does. It helps a lot!!!!

Everytime I wash my hair, I put styling mouse in it, special for curls, and don't blowdry it. I never ever blow dry my hair. NEVER! Blow dryers are BAD, lol.

I have thick, coarse, wavy hair. I once went to a hairdresser who made a big show of "thinning" my hair, only to accost me with volumizing spray and try to sell it to me. Did not compute. :confused3

I have thick, curly frizzy hair :( I've had to deal with it my whole life and the only thing I found that works is going to a salon and getting it chemically straightened. Probably not the BEST thing to do but it lasts about 2 months (you can wash it like 2 days after you have it done) and it really made my hair look pretty.

That's the deal I have with my hair -- it does what it wants and I let it.

My hair isn't terribly thick, but it does have quite a bit of body. When the humidity get high here in the NE, my hair looks terrible. As I get more grey hair, it's gotten even less manageable. :sad2:

I did put a temporary dye on my hair yesterday, in preparation for a trip next week, and it calmed my hair quite a bit.

I have horribly thick, frizzy hair. I can't do anything with it, except put it in a ponytail. I have tried to straighten it, color it, do the perm, anything but nothing helps. If I let it grow long, it makes dreads. If I cut it short I end up looking like a mushroom. I can't have it too short, because I don't have the face for it. I hate going to the salon because the try to style my hair and I end up looking hideous. I have stopped letting them even blow dry my hair and just leaving with wet hair.

Everyone loves my hair and can't understand why I don't. When I was little I had stick straight soft blond hair. Somehow I ended up with the mess I have now.

I did find a shampoo that is anti poof (it's made by Sunsilk). It has really helped and it isn't expensive at all.

At last, I have found my people!

I too have thick, coarse hair that is prone to frizz. Coloring does help, if you are going darker.

I keep it short and I (gasp!) cut it myself, because I just hate going to a salon. I also use Pantene Smooth & Silk products. I never blow dry it or even brush it, just finger style with some leave in conditioner and maybe some gel if it is really getting rambunctious.

I'm telling you guys - go to a hair dresser that uses the CHI iron or similar. This way you can see what it does and how your hair reacts before putting in the $$$ to get one. I think there are a few other irons that work about the same but I can't remember the brand names. It can't be one of those cheaper irons - they don't get as hot. You'll be amazed at how smooth your hair can become with the CHI.

I tried two brands of flat irons before getting the CHI. I was convinced that a flat iron couldn't do anything for me until my hairdresser used a CHI.

I used to get my hair thinned. It really didn't do much for me.

I've talked to other people who had this done. However, it didn't work for me. :confused3 As for hair coloring - It helps my hair as well.

It depends. Normally I can go 2-3 days. However, I've been exercising more outside and I sweat a lot so I have to wash my hair every 1-2 days now.

On average, it takes me about 10 minutes or less to fix my shoulder-length hair. Sometimes 15 if I want it to look "just right". Before, I would blow dry it in sections and it would take me a good 30-40 minutes to fix. However, my hair would always frizz back up within an hour after being outside in muggy weather (with the blow dry method).
