I have been reading over the thread about the T shirts.

My question is, What kind of thread do you use to actually sew the Mickey head on the shirt?

I have the T shirts and Tie dye kit ready to go.

Also, how did you make the Mickey head? Did you use a paper plate or something like that as your outline?

Thanks for any advice! :earsboy:

I also have a question about these mickey shirts...when do you remove the thread???

Well I, a not so crafty person, have just made 5 tie-dye shirts. :cool1: I was told to use waxed thread, and when I asked for some at Wal Mart, I was basically given a spool of thin fishing line. :confused3 So I gave some thicker fishing line a try, but it broke when I pulled it tight. I then tried dental floss and it worked great! I thought it would be hard to pull thru but it was not.

I printed off a mickey head somewhere on one of these posts and then enlarged it some. :earsboy:

I used a lot of colors on my shirts and I think they look really cool. I thought the banding part was the hardest--getting it tight enough and thick enough. The thicker the bands are, the more white that shows and the less bleeding of colors.

good luck :cheer2: give it a try and live and learn as you go along. :Pinkbounc

Daisyduck, that is a good question. I didn't even think about that part.

How much dental floss will I need for 3 shirts?

Nank,
You will have to let us know how your shirts turn out. I plan on doing it soon...but am a little apprehensive about it because I really want them to turn out good. Good luck!!

Dental Floss and you take it out at the very end when you rinse the shirts. It was very easy!!! I made 2 sets for my family of 5. One with a black Mickey head and another set with different color Mickey heads.

Since I just finished making four Mickey Tie dye shirts I will share how I did it. I initially printed out a Mickey head shape to use, however I didn't think it was large enough. So instead I used a dinner plate for the head and used a large saucer for the ears, I traced this unto newspaper, in case it didn't turn out how I wanted it to. I than traced this unto cardboard from a cereal box.

Wash and dry your shirts before you do anything else to them. 100% cotton will allow for the brightest colors. My dye told me not to use a dryer sheet or fabric softener.

I then lightly traced Mickey's head unto the front and back of the shirt with a pencil. If you only want it on the front, only trace their. You may want to try one of the shirts on to get an idea of where to place the Mickey head.

Next I baste stitched on the lines of the Mickey head shape that I traced with dental floss. Don't use a thick needle or it might leave large holes. Only sew only side of the shirt as a time. If you are making Mickey on the front and back you will have 2 tightly gather pouches when you are finished basting.

As you stitch gather the fabric. When you get to where you started pull it as tight as you can into a pouch shape. Make sure the ears and the whole Mickey head is sticking out. Wrap the string around you tightly wrapped pouch and pull tight and knot. Wrap rubber bands on top of the string. Wrap the rest of the shirt with various rubber bands.

I used a dye kit with soda ash and bottles with the dye powder already inside they came with rubber gloves and rubber bands. After all your shirts are rubberbanded you mix the soda ash with water. Soak you shirts in water about 20 minutes. Follow the directions with the dye for water amount and how long to soak.

After your shirts are soaked in the soda ash, wring the excess water out. Start dying the Mickey head(s) first make sure it is saturated with color so you get a full Mickey head. The ones with dark colors turned out better since the dye ran through the various sections. Continue to dye the shirt, make sure to get dye in the folds and have it soaked through.

Place each shirt in a separate plastic bag or cover with plastic and let the dye soak about 24 hours, more or less depending on your directions, the longer you wait the more intense the color.

Rinse the shirts with warm water and remove the rubber bands as you rinse. Cut the strings out of your Mickey head, be careful not to cut the shirt. Rinse until the water runs clear. Wash your shirts in hot water and than dry.

I hope this helps.

To make the stencil, I just used regular computer paper and I traced around a bowl for the head part and a glass for the ears. I then cut it out and traced around it in pencil on the shirt. I used waxed dental floss to sew the Mickey and then I took it out when I was rinsing the shirt and removing the rubber bands. Mine turned out really great! When we get back, I'll post pictures of us wearing them in the parks.
Good luck!

Here are some pictures of the shirts we made.

Also When you trace out your pattern on your shirt - try it out!!! Esp for women, you want to be careful where those Mickey Ears land!

we saw a family of tie dye mickey shirts the other day here at WDW...and i was so tempted to be like DISBOARDERS !!! but yea...i got nervous and didn't :guilty: But their shirt were really cool... :earboy2:

just thought i'd share lol

You've probably got enough advice by now, but in addition to the above here's what we did.

We just used regular thread (I think we doubled it for strength). Since we were using a different color for Mickey compared to the surrounding area, it didn't seem to matter that we didn't use waxed thread.

Make sure you use enough dye, especially for the Mickey. Make sure you get the dye for the Mickey in all the crevices, otherwise sometimes the ears do not get the "full" look. Also, keep in mind that some of the dye will rinse out during the rinse and 1st wash. The dye also looks a little less bright once it's dry. So ... use plenty of dye.

As one of the other posters said, we used cereal boxes as the pattern for the Mickey. A larger Mickey for the adults, and a smaller one for the kids.

We used regular thread doubled up and it worked fine. I also printed out one of the mickey heads from the T-shirt thread I printed it onto transparancy paper (clear plastic type) and it worked awesome for tracing around. They were time consuming, but easy to do.
