I am looking to upgrade my camera and need some advice from you! So many of you take beautiful pics that are posted here on the boards so i thought I would get your opinions...

I would like to get a new point and shoot digital camera with megazoom capabilities, but I don't think I'm ready for a dSLR. Any recommendations? I would also like one with a rechargable lithium ion battery.

Canon and Nikon both make very good cameras. Do not go for a "megazoom" it is not very helpful in a P&S ..... and it is particularly not helpful if the zoom is not optical (made of glass)

not sure about the lithium battery (rechargeable NiMH AA are preferred)
I would recommend Canon SX10 and Panasonic FZ28, - telezoom, macro, video, manual controls and great pics.

Although they have a lot of features dSLRs can be used in auto just like a p&s. Even though this does not give all the benefits of the SLR there are still the advantages of a large sensor (for low noise), very fast focusing, 3+ frames per second, and a much greater range of usable apertures.

Then, when you are ready to try some advanced settings they are all there waiting for you, without buying a new camera.

If you can find a Canon S5 IS it is being discontinued but make for an amazing bridge Camera and for under $300 it can`t be beat.

I have the Sony H9 bridge camera. I love it. I wasn't ready for the DSLR either, perhaps in a couple more years. I like the fact that I can still get great photos, change my settings, and this camera happens to take wonderful macro pics as well. I LOVE the macro setting. The newest model of mine is the H50. I personally wouldn't shell out the money for a DSLR until you are ready to make that kind of money investment. With a bridge camera you can do the same stuff as a DSLR, with the limitation of night photography and low light ride photography. I got some Spectro shots worth keeping but they are not perfect. The castle fireworks and Illuminations pics I was also pleased with, just wish I had a better viewing area (which was my fault). My ride photos were difficult to capture, but even for the skilled DSLR user, they have to practice to get those shots. We happen to have some wonderful photographers on here, but only a few have truelly captured the indoor rides beautifully. IMHO of course. Anyway...Need any other help on a bridge camera let me know.

I am going to respectfully disagree with your statement. The megazoom came in very handy with my stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I also used it in the parks from time to time as well. With my camera, so far the only way it seems to use digital zoom is when I use the maual settings. I think this is what you were saying when you referred to the zoom is not optical.

I have a Nikon DSLR, but I really love my Canon super zoom too, it's an sx100. It takes really nice pictures and is alot more portable then my DSLR. Although I do love my DSLR too.
