The thread about nurses just made me so sad,and especally the Nurse Fiona..I just wanted to let you know that someone out here appreciates you..I have seen how hard you work..While I have had some wonderful doctors you nurses were the ones who treated me most like and indivdual..Not a disease , a diagnosis,a name on a chart or even worst of all a *novelty*. I know most you were tired, and frazzled and overworked and probably had 30 other patients, but most of you took the time to talk to me and to my kids and in some cases my panicked other half..You recognized that I was scared and angry and tired . I apprecate what you nurses do more than you ever know....That also goes for the PA's

Thank you Jenny! :grouphug:

I chose not to respond to the overweight nurses thread, but I sat wondering just how in shape/healthy those posters were . I have coworkers in every size, shape and color..... and you know what? We all give wonderful care to our patients :thumbsup2.

I haven't seen the overweight nurses thread but I definitely agree with Jenny's sentiment.
I know a lot of nurses and know how hard you work and how little credit you get for the work you do. I know it's especially hard with the nursing shortages so thank you :thumbsup2

My sister was an RN for many years at St Joseph's in Providence... She doesn't nurse anymore..She burned out ..I think she did it for around 17 years working in the CCU

Awwww, shucks, thanks for noticin'. :eeyore:

(I responded a little bit to the overweight nurses thread, but I didn't understand that we were being busted on. I commented about the DR.'s bring us high fat/ high calorie treats and we take care of other people, but not ourselves. )

I think it's a matter of opinion as to whether you were being "busted on". I didn't think so either.

To clarify, what made me sad was the one description by the nurse of day to day life as a nurse..I've heard similar stories from my sister.

DOctors get all the credit, but the reality is ,the ones who are taking care of us,are the nurses

Whew! I thought I had missed something. I responded to the thread in the first place because it was started by an RN. :goodvibes

You are awesome! And very smart! :goodvibes

I've spent the past year or so in treatment for breast cancer. I've had chemo, surgery and radiation. All I can say is that nurses are THE BEST. Incredible people--kind, compassionate, knowledgeable and funny. Don't know what I would have done without you all.

Maybe I just took some of the posts wrong? :confused3 I did like this one, by Julia&NicksMom:

"The more I think about it - the more ridiculous it seems to say that they shouldn't smoke and be overweight b/c they should be more aware of the health risks

aren't we all aware of the health risks that go along with smoking and being overweight?"

First I just want to give you a hug! :grouphug:

Jenny, what a great thread. I would like to thank all of the nurses as well. You are special people in my eyes!!!! It takes a special heart to do what you do and I have yet to meet a nurse that doesn't love it. That puts me in awe of how incredible you all are so please let me thank you from the bottom of my heart as well!!!!!!!! :cheer2:

We all know lots of things--but when someone makes their career about health--you would think they would know better since they studied it. Comparing them to the average person who learned all of their health in a 5th grade health class and a smattering of elsehwere in their other classes since then. Hardly a comparision and I do believe the point of that observation in the thread.

:confused3

I'm baffled. Of course I had to look to see the thread you were talking about b/c I didn't recall it was about nursing bashing. It just seemed that some felt compelled to come and defend the nursing profession, but the original topic was not specifically about that.

.

I never indicated it was "bashing" nurses! Jeesh. I just found it sad that it is expected that nurses all be slender because of what we do for a living. I think quality of care should be the important thing, not what size we are. That's all I was saying. If you read that thread, I did post on it & said I realized that the tone of the OP was not to insult nurses...once I read through it & the reponses.

Lately I have been feeling as burned out as Fiona stated in that thread. I am working a 68 hour week this week and I am tired. Add to that a few rough nights and a few demanding and unappreciative patients and it is so easy to get discouraged. When someone says "thank you" or "I can tell you really love your job" (like they did last night) it really makes my day!!! :sunny:

People who are not RNs who do not live our crazy lifestyle have no idea what it is like to be exhausted most of the time. Our job is both physically and emotionally exhausting. I did feel like that thread was bashing in nature and that was why I have stayed away from it. I am already having a rough week, and don't need to hear how fat and lazy the general public thinks I am.

Once again, thank you! It is patients like you who motivate me to continue on in nursing. Despite the rough nights, I really do love taking care of others.
