If you are like me and afraid of flying, I have some possible help for you. Few things scare me, but I have always been a white knuckle flyer. This always ruined vacations because I would worry about the flight before the trip and during the vacation worry about the flight back. So my doctor prescribed Xanax to help me relax for our recent flight to Hawaii. It is an anti-anxiety medication and let me tell you it did the trick. It took about an hour to kick in and I was relaxed during the whole flight. It lasts a long time, up to 6 or more hours. It's to the point I am actually looking forward to our next flight in August (to WDW)!

I used to love flying until I had my two children. Now I am a nervous wreck and scared to death to fly. I had heard from alot of people on the boards how Xanax really helps them relax for the flight just like you. I am proud to say that I just got my prescription filled for Xanax for our trip on August 23. I can't wait now to see how well these little pills work. Thanks everyone.

My solution is the bar cart. Park it here!! I don't drink much normally, so it hits me hard. Maybe the xanax would help me avoid the problem of being stone drunk at the end of a flight at 11 am.?? Just keep in mind that xanax is VERY addicting - I have a friend who was given a prescription a few years back and wound up in rehab because the addiction was so strong. Be careful, but I'm sure for a couple of flights a year it wouldn't hurt (and would prob. be more socially acceptable than my plan)

My doctor prescribed Xanax for me on a trip we took last December. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to work very well for me. I still do not look back on that vacation fondly because I was so nervous about the flights. On the flight back I was actually so anxious that I seemed to surpress any effect that the Xanax would have had. As soon as the plane landed, boy did I feel it. I don't want to discourage anyone from trying this as I've heard many people say that it has really helped them. I wish it did for me. :(

Does the Xanaz knock you out? I do not want to be knocked out, since I worry that if there is an emergency, how will I save my children if I am looking at the flames advancing towards us and all I can think is, "Wow, what pretty colours". ;)

Actually, I did try Valium once, and that is the reaction I had on it (well, there were no emergencies, but that was the state of mind I was in). Still, I am such a wreck, even months in advance of a flight I start becoming anxious. I need help, too!

I have the same question. Does it make you all stupid feeling? I wouldnt want to be half sleep walking on my first day in Disney.
I would love this stuff if it really works, our flights usually are about 5 hours so 6 hours would be great.
Any info?

Actually, I have such weird reactions to medicine that I would be worried about freaking out and attacking the cockpit or something. When I was in labor and had Demarayl, I had to be restrained because I was trying to pull all my I.V.'s out and leave the hospital. So far, my favorite is the bar cart-before and during the flight. Also, taking a red eye last year helped. I got slightly buzzed before takeoff, more buzzed during takeoff(with the help of a flask) and then slept through the rest of the flight!!

But I am very tempted to try Xanax. What about a regular medicine that just causes drowsiness-like Dramamine or Tylenol PM?

The Xanax did not knock me out or make me goofy. In addition, there is no hangover effect. The relaxing effect kicked in after an hour of taking it and lasted about 6 hours. If you have a short flight, I would not drive a car within 6 hours of taking it. But I am sure it can affect people differently. In fact, the effect is not like drinking too much, where people can become disoriented, obnoxious, or pass out. On a recent flight to Hawaii, we encountered a couple in their mid-40s who were obviously drunk and missed their first flight. They came to the gate as we were checking in. So back to the bar they stumble. They were put on our flight, got there just before boarding, and pushed their way to the front of the line!. Several people told them to get back, which they did. When we departed the plane later, the lady could hardly walk up the gang plank. What an embarrassment. I am not a big fan of booze on airplanes. Most people do not abuse it, but few that do ruin it for everyone.

Take a half of a Zaanax pill. This is what I do and it is plenty to relieve anxiety over the flight. You can always take another half if you need to. This is the only thing that works for me. I have tried relaxation techniques etc.
Just take a half of a Zaanax!!!
