Thinking about taking a trip up there in late May and just had a quick question for anyone who may have lived near or traveled through the area.

I'm looking at hotels and need a recommendation for what part of town to stay in if we want to be able to walk to a lot of places. I can't figure out where would be the most centrally located---Upper Town, Old Quebec, Lower Town??

I know this is OT, but also know that there are a fair amount of Canadians on this board (DAVE!) and just thought it'd be the best place to ask! :goodvibes

Old Quebec if you can try to get near the parliment building lots of places to see and take pics of around there

Le Château Frontenac is where we stayed last July. I highly recommend it. It's right down in old Quebec within walking distance to all the major attractions. We just parked our car and walked everywhere.

Here's a link to my Quebec trip thread. Scroll down for the Quebec City pics. Hope this helps.

We stayed here many years ago (might have been before you were born Ann! :rotfl:) but I'd pick Le Chateau Frontenanc again if it were possible. :thumbsup2 I have many pictures taken with my old Minolta x700 SLR from that trip.

Also if your a fan of Cirque du Soleil's starting June 24th until Sept 6th every Wednesday to Sunday there are free shows running nightly Here's some info

We did this last year and had a great time.

Any other question just ask away!!

Thanks for the suggestion. The hotel I was looking at seems to be right in that neighborhood, so it sounds like it'd be perfect!

Oooooooh, that's a very purdy hotel Dave. :lovestruc

Unfortunately, I think it might be a little pricey for this trip. We weren't supposed to take a full-fledged vacation this year, but since I got a bonus at work I am taking us somewhere for a long weekend. It was either Vegas or Montreal/Quebec City (weird selection, I know) and now that I see we can watch Cirque du Soleil's traveling shot in Montreal---I think Canada just got the final vote! :thumbsup2

Grrrrrr, why did you have to give a second vote to that hotel? ;) It looks beaaaaaautiful, but I found some nice looking ones right in Old Quebec for like half the price. It's just like my feelings about lenses.

Sure, I could save some money and get one that's not as nice and probably be happy with it---but why, when I could spend more?! :rotfl: :rotfl2:

I am a fan of Cirque du Soleil! I used to watch it all the time on TV and then saw my first live show in December (La Nouba in Disney) and I think it might have been the highlight of the trip. So much fun!

I think pushing our trip to June would be a little late for us, but like I said, the traveling show is in Montreal in May which would be perfect. I just went from a 4 to a 8 on the excitement scale today, Dave. :woohoo:

Oh and PS: Dave, great little TR, I don't know how I missed it the first time around. You got some great pics and seeing them from a visitor's point of view really makes me excited to get up there and hopefully get shooting. :goodvibes

I would also recomend Le Château Frontenac. A couple years ago the rooms were about $500-$600 a night in the Summer. There is a big discount during the Winter months.

No matter where you stay, you will be charged a large amount of taxes on you room. I can't remember the exact amount but it was around 20%.

The good news is that taxes can be refunded at the US boarder. If you are driving, just stop off at the last rest stop in Canada prior to crossing the US boarder. I think the taxes were refunded directly to my VISA card.

Sorry about that! lol

Thanks so much Ann.

No matter what hotel you stay in you will have great time. Just try and stay close to old the part of Quebec City. Once there you can pretty much walk to anywhere you want to go. There are plenty of photo opps so be prepared. I took nearly 800 pics in 3 days there. I loved it so much there I would go back right now if I could. Have fun planning. :thumbsup2

Alright, all booked! I ended up finding some really great hotel rates for our trip in May (I'm assuming because peak summer season doesn't start until June/July) and lucky me, for being a member of AAA I was able to book a room at the Chateau Frontenac for only $169CAD per night! :woohoo:

I know it may be blasphemous, but this is almost as much fun as planning a trip to Disney. ;)

Now that the hotel is booked---I need suggestions for things that aren't to be missed during our time there. We'll be in Quebec City for two days and Montreal for two days, so while we don't have a very long time to explore everything, we've got some! :thumbsup2

Nice job on the hotel Ann! Now aren't you glad we mentioned it?!?

It's been so long since I was in Quebec but a couple of things stand out in my memory. The funicular was a nice way to get down/up to and from the lower part of the city. We also did a horse drawn buggy tour of the old city - a relaxing way to see some of the sights.

In Montreal all I recall was touring some of the Olympic sights.

Trip planning anywhere is always fun! :yay:

Here's a site you can go to for great ideas :

quebecregion (dot) com

Must sees in Quebec, and around :

Old part of Quebec City (Petit Champlain, Funicular and Place Royal)
The Parliament
Les Galeries de la Capitale (big shopping center with an amusement park)
Driving around l'Île d'Orléans
Plaines d'Abraham (Plains of Abraham)
Montmorency Falls Park

Have a nice visit in Quebec :-)

From a Quebecker :)

both quebec city and old montreal are beautiful.

We really enjoyed pointe-a-Calliere museum in montreal and the botanical gardens. we walked everywhere and also took the metro which was very efficient.

In quebec city, we did all the regular museums etc. plains of abraham, and walked absolutely everywhere. on the boardwalk in front of the chateau frontenac, they have excavated the original kitchens and "basement" rooms of the chateau. very interesting. the food is amazing.

have a great trip!

Alright Ann!!!! You'll love that place. It's the Grand Floridian of Quebec City.
And a great rate to boot. You did much better then us last year. :woohoo::woohoo:

Have fun with your planning. Keep us posted on how things are going.

I might have to ask you for some advice as well as we are planning on taking a trip to New York City this summer. We also plan on driving to Cap Cod as well. Looking forward to it. :thumbsup2

Don't miss the Changing of the Guard ceremony at 10:00 AM the Citidel. It's done with all the pomp of a European country.
