We're planning to go on Tues..would've gone Fri but DH had to work.
Oh well..at least I can say all that walking will help to balance out the 'bad' foods I"ll be eating..like corndogs, turkey legs and cotton candy!

We go sometimes, they always have pretty good shows.

My girls have now discovered the midway, for years we just avoided that part. We still do just a couple of rides, I think it's cheaper to go to WDW!

ALL Texas DISers?!?! It's a mighty big state. ;)

It's a little too far of a drive from Alvin although I use to go as a kid. I was born in Dallas and lived there until I was 10. My parents live near Amarillo and my mom is a DISer. I'm pretty sure they're not going either.

A 5-hour drive from Seguin...no way...if I want to drive that far I'll just add another 15 hours and be at WDW.

A big, definite, for sure.... maybe. We like to go during the week to avoid weekend crowds & do not want to get caught in the TX/OU crowd (or OU/TX, depending who you like. Me, I want them to tie. :teeth: ). Gotta get a corny dog while we're there too! (for the low, low price of 6 tickets. That's $3 to you & me). I agree w/ janette, it seems cheaper to go to WDW.

I went once in the 50's. It stunk. It was full of what people think of as the typical "carney" folks. Low life. Maybe it has changed in the past 40 years. I'll probably never know.

live in dallas and now live downtown and i don't get the whole State Fair thing (yes i am Texan). I've been the last 3 years and never really enjoy it. I think it smells of burned grease no matter where i go:( . However, i will probably go again  i get roped into going with friends and I just smile.

Carl--I don't think it has changed much.

Question: What is the deal with the Dallas schools having a
"Fair Day" the kids get a day off to go to the fair:eek: Talk about confused priorities:rolleyes:

well, like i said i probably see you there. If i have to go I'll be there when the Dixie Chicks are scheduled to perform.

I haven't been to the fair since 1966. I doubt we'll make the trip from Michigan to Dallas for the State Fair this year :)

Hey, Kath -- I think 1966 was the last year I went too. I don't remember seeing you there. ;) :teeth:

I used to go on Fair Day when I was in school. I lived about 45 miles away from Dallas. I always enjoyed it, but my parents didn't let us ride rides at fairs. We could only ride the big ferris wheel, since they don't ever take that down.

Yes, we'll probably go even though we usually see the same things year after year. Big Tex is supposed to be able to interact with people this year so that should be interesting.

Our "Fair Day" is on a Wednesday every year so we don't have the crowds. Its also canned food day so those of us who have to pay for a ticket can get in for three cans of food.

As for why there is "Fair Day" for the school kids, I don't know. This goes way back. I remember having a "Fair Day" when I lived in Dallas in elementary school in the early 60's. It was always lots of fun getting out of school to go to the fair. Lot's of school districts surrounding Dallas have a "Fair Day".

There is just something about going to the fair that I just can't explain. Being on the midway after dark, eating a State Fair corny dog, viewing all the arts and crafts and homemade goods to see which ones got a blue ribbon, the new cars, the animals, listening to Big Tex "Howdy Folks!", people watching...... It all makes me want to go back each year again and again.

Nope. I always have too much going on this time of year :)

I like the fair.

I think it's kinda like going to a party. It's fun if you make it fun otherwise your just there.

I really like to go see all the new cars, and eat all the "fair food."

So what if I spend $50 trying to win the goldfish that will die in the morning. I had fun and created one more memory for my life.

I have to agree with CBR.It's fun if you make it fun.We always spend at least an hour(sometimes more!)drooling over new cars in the Auto building, going to see neat shows(like the canadian mounties..:P~~~)and doing things you normally wouldn't get to do,like Budweiser Beer School in the biergarten. We always go to the Texas Lotto show at least once..if not twice!and I think the host(Paul Adams)recognizes us because we've been at least once every year for the last 4 or 5 years.:)I'm thinking of making a tee this year that says "I (heart)the Paul Adams Show".;)The fair only comes once a year and it's a chance to go and do things you wouldn't normally do,see things you wouldn't normally see(like the return of the giant Land O Lakes butter sculpture!).We don't ride many rides, normally just the Texas Star ferriswheel and we do a lot of shows and the petting zoo and whatnot. The fair is one of the highlights of my year and before I came along,DH had never been. We're making it a family tradition to go now because we both enjoy going.I kinda feel sorry for those of you who don't go.YOu're missing out on a whole lotta fun!

I have mixed feelings.
We go every year and it was one of my DH's and my first dates 14 years ago. I was SO impressed that he knew all of the cattle official names and characteristics. Turns out he grew up on a ranch like me (he swears they never let me outside because I don't know any animals):D
We are going to WDW last Nov. early Dec. and I am not keen on dropping at least $100.00 on the fair. I would rather save $ for WDW. He on the other hand goes to WDW under extreme protest.
Every year we spend less and less time there. We breeze through the car section because they do not have a great selection of the card we probably will buy. It is also a pain to try to manuever through the whole fair w/ a stroller, especially in the exhibition halls. Also, I am always in the throghs of allergy season and miserable outside which does not help either.
BTW, if you go, the VERY BEST bathrooms are in the food hall, buy not exhibits. They are sponsored by Charmin.
