For all the people who are 'freaking out' about the Carsland/DCA crowds...stop it!

I have been to DLR since June 15th a total of 9 times now which is an unbelievable record for me lol, but there has been one thing after another to draw me back! And I spent the first 4 days at a hotel to just do as much as possible. I have been there on the weekends, week days, non-black out dates and even on the days when DCA hit attendance records for the first time in its 11 years, even beating out DL in those instances and you want to know my analysis for the 'busy' summer the resort is having with CL and RSR? That its really much ado about nothing!

Seriously, besides RSR which has ridiculous waits for it and has to be a record of some kind, the rest of the resort feels darn near peaceful! DL has been nearly paradise with how managable the crowds the past few weeks! Saturdays are basically bliss now. Dont get me wrong, sure there are STILL lines, but besides SM, Matterhorn's reopening and Splash on the hottest days, everything in that park is around 30 mins average. ST, the HUGE ride last year seems to be so 2011 now and there are FPs past 8 p.m. now. I know I grabbed one last night at that hour. Its insane how calm DL is these days compared to the most summers around this time.

As for DCA, sure, its more crowded than its ever been, but I do have to give them credit, they got the original design right in the sense it can soak up the crowds. UNLIKE DL that is crazy bottleneck in a most places, not so for DCA with the exception of CL and its been easy as pie to get around the place! And because there is so much entertainment soaking up the place it has distributed the crowds nicely. And yes, RSR is really the true culprit to the madness, but once you get out of that line, the rest of the park is very managable. I think TOT, TSM and LFT are really the other other rides that get into the 60+ minute waits these days, but everything else? 20-30 min waits average!

I thought the resort would feel like a mad house this summer, but after being there 9 times and now the majority of APers are blocked out, its been really just the opposite so far! I think what it looks like that is happening is both parks are balancing the crowds the way it SHOULD be! DL is now getting a little less people due to DCAs re-opening and DCA is getting more, but the majority of the crowd snaking through CL and RSR, so pretty much every thing else feels very, very managable!

Now, summer just started, it can get worse fast, I'm not denying that, but the consensus was the first two weeks was suppose to be just ugly in terms of crowds! Not only did it have the re-opening and everyone trying to see it, it was also when the second Aps were not blocked out and was going to see it as much as possible before the end of the month! And while busy, not INSANE busy that was predicted. I was there on both the 17th AND the 24th where it was predicted to be the worse days of the summer and both days felt like just an average summer day, maybe a tad busier, but nothing to fear!

Ok, why am I writing this? Because I see thread after thread where people are SOOO concerned about their upcoming trips in August, September, November, next week, Thursday after next and so on. Will it be busy, yes, but its going to surprise people how well balanced the crowds are. Maybe TOO well since it seems like some areas in the resort now feels over staffed. I was at WOC tonight, second show, and I swear there were so few people actually attending the WOC show, the staffers were spending more time putting people who just happen to be walking by in the viewing area instead of controlling the line. That show was VERY light tonight and even for a lot of rides, OUTSIDE of RSR, is loaded with CMs standing around more than directing queues.

This may be the best time to experience DLR this summer! LOADS of new experiences and managable crowds where you can do pretty much everything under 30 mins and FPs are plenty, ONCE again not counting RSR!

And honestly, it may change, but I see basically the entire summer like this. The first two dreaded weeks came and went and with more Apers blocked out now, it may either be much lighter than Disney planned OR with now two full day parks in place, it has found a great healthy balance!

Eitherway, stop worrying about the crowds kids. Get there early to do RSR and enjoy the rest of the day taking it easy with loads to do with very few big waits! ;)

Tiger, thanks for your observations and analysis. What you are saying is much what I and others (I think maybe even you) have been predicting for a number of months.

Every morning I would wake up to a thread with the words "DLR" and "insane" in them, and it was just bothersome.

Some people patted themselves on the back because they had chosen to defer a DLR trip for 6 or even 12 months.

The prime issue was always going to be Cars Land - the big, new thing. Just like it is every summer. Outside of CL there is no reason for crowds to be anything bad. DCA has 12 extra acres now at CL and DCA has 3 extra park hours per day - plus Early Entry this summer so another hour there - and this will soak up people even more and help disburse things.

People had visions of the entire resort overflowing people everywhere. That could only happen if attendance everywhere went up by like 20% or something. That was not going to happen.

Regarding June 17 and 24, I think those predictions from the illustrious Al Lutz (and not too hard to figure out on your own) had more to do with parking issues. Apparently whatever Disney did to mitigate the parking issue has worked.

Anyways I agree with you and appreciate you taking the time to write it all down.

:wizard:

I agree that crowds were manageable and lines were fine. I have nothing to compare Disneyland to, as this was our first trip, but we've been to Disney World on Thanksgiving when the park reached capacity. Now that is crowded.

We were in Disneyland all last week and it was wonderful to wait only 20 minutes for TTMM. We walked onto Soarin'. We found great spots for the first viewing of WoC at 8:20pm.

With the exception of RSR, our longest wait was to meet Merida!

By the way, what is your take on how to strategize DCA this summer? We have four full days and will start two at DCA using EMH. On the first day I was planning to just bite the bullet, get to the DCA gates early at say 6:30 (maybe 6:20), ride RSR first and (hopefully if RSR is not broken) then just ride LFT and MJJ before getting RSR FPs. Then soak up CL a bit more at a slower pace before branching out around DCA and backtracking to BVS.

On the second day I think we may just start at TSMM as I have heard of folks getting in 3-4 rides during EE. Then maybe grab RSR FPs at 8AM and/or do RSR SR.

I know on the first day DCA we are doing the same thing as everyone else which is usually not the best idea, but I would like to get in two RSR rides with the whole group of 6 not using SR - and I want to ride RSR at night using FPs.

I was there yesterday and I was prepared for wall to wall people, but it was not bad at all. Now that the walls are down the whole park flows much better. CL was easy to walk around. I was expecting to be bumping into people and strollers, but it was not like that at all. RSR line was, of course, crowded but walking around was great.

I'm looking forward to the Official HydroGuy DCA Touring Suggestions. We're going for four days the day after Labor Day. I'm counting on the crowds being smaller (this is typically one of the slowest times of the year) but hours being longer in the past. Whether or not that happens, we'll still have a great time.

We will be there next week. I am numb from planning and ready to just let it all happen! :goodvibes Your take is good to hear, and something I have been thinking in my own mind all along. We are interested in seeing Cars Land, but not at the expense of everything else. If CL draws people away from the other attractions, that's great for us! My son said the same thing yesterday when I told him about the long waits for RSR. He gets it, and he is 12. ;)

Thanks for the heads-up! It does put things in perspective, since it seems that many, if not a disproportionate number of the park-goers, want to invest time playing with the "new toy".

Last week we received an email from friends in CA who took their visiting 7-yo daughter to DL on Sunday, June 24. Since it was a one-day trip, they opted to spend the day only in DL. Their take:
...our experience was fantastic. I think the most we waited for anything was 15-20 minutes and the didn't happen until later in the day. Most times we walked right on or waited no more than 10 minutes.
That's great for a summer weekend day! :)

Thank you so much for your encouraging post and for putting all of this into perspective.
:thumbsup2

I'm a natural worrier, and so all of the "OMG! This is crazy!!!!" is getting to me. I won't to be realistic about what to expect, but I guess I was seriously getting into fear mode here...
:scared:

You've given us all hope!

We aren't going until October and are staying at the Disneyland Hotel. I figured we would take advantage of the EMH offered and go at the pace of our kids. I don't mind 40-minute waits for things so if something is only 20 or 30 -- that's an added bonus; I'll just be glad to be there.

Thanks!

We went June 20-24. 5 days after Grand Re-Opening (oh noes!). I was indeed worried but it was a great time to be there. It felt wrong how empty it was. A few times on Saturday we would look around and ask out loud "where is everyone?!" And multiple times it felt wrong to use a FP because the stand-by line was only 15 or 20 min. We had 2 first timers with us and they got spoiled beyond belief.

Easily the most relaxed trip I've had there. I would say to prepare for your trip as usual. And if you are the planning type, plan for CL seperately (mostly). Know that the rides will be busy and prepare stick it out in tough lines. Don't try to wedge CL randomly into your day somewhere. Hit it early, knock it out, and carry on with the rest of your day. When we planned our trip to have a DL day, a DCA day, and a CL day. We prioritized it to make sure we had time to enjoy it, and so we didn't wander around clueless and wasting daylight. CL only took us til noonish and after that we putzed around DCA and enjoyed the shorter than usual lines.

Also, besides the rides, there are quite a few things to see and do there and Route 66 isn't packed like sardines. There is plenty of room to wander.

But OP is right on

awww thanks SO much for posting this! It is very much appreciated! We do not like crowds (especially the husband!) and so I was really hoping for NOT wall to wall people when we go in Sep-Oct. Your post has really set me at ease! If it's this easy to get around the parks now in summer, right after the Carsland opening, it surely will be even easier than that after school is back in session! Thanks!!

I'll agree with fctiger. I was at DCA on Carsland opening day, and I've been back 3 times since, weekdays and weekends, and I have to say it's all manageable. Well except for RSR, which is insane.

I was at DLR this weekend, a little apprehensive because I haven't been on a Saturday in forever, let alone a Saturday in Summer. But, it was so pleasant! There is entertainment everywhere in DLR and there were more characters out than I've seen in a while. Rides were posted as a 25 minute wait, but were really about 10. Buzz, BTMRR, Jungle Cruise, Pirates and HM were all walk ons. If they had a wait it was under 5 minutes, and in the case of HM, I walked through the queue and directly onto the elevator. Even the Matterhorn was only a 25 minute wait, and when I used the single rider line it was less than 5 minutes! Fantasyland was busy, but I usually just pass through on my way from tomorrowland to Frontierland.

The big ticket attractions, Space, Splash .. will have more substantial lines, but there was so much else to do, see, and enjoy that waiting in one or two longer lines will barely be a blip on the day. You'll still get so much done. It's a great opportunity to see some things you might otherwise pass up. There is a wonderful vocal group ' Voices of Liberty' that sing before certain performances of "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln". Check them out, and get out of the sun for awhile at the Opera House while you enjoy that show.

DCA was busy, but there is such a happy buzz to that place now. Screamin' had a 25 min wait, TSMM was still around 40, Soarin's line looked like it was pretty normal (25 min) but as a single rider I was usually on in 5 min. or so. And I'm happy to say that the cozy cone pop-corn line is now very manageable, but the ice cream 'cone' line was super long. Remember, just steps away from Carsland is Ghiardelli's, and they have a good variety of real ice cream, and on Buena Vista Street, Clarabelle's has ice cream too.

The fountains at DCA are finally being used during the day with a short 10 min. show that has Goofy directing the fountains (set to music). It's fun to stop and watch as you're passing by, and they do this several times during the day.

Lest you think I used good plannning and got there at rope drop, I will confess that on Saturday I got to the park at 2pm, and on Sunday 11:00 am. I still got lots done, and really enjoyed myself. There is lots - lots - lots to do! Don't get hung up on the crowd reports.

What about Luigi's Flying Tires?

Luigi's has a deceptively long line. I believe the average wait is still about 90 min.

For RSR we experienced everything from FP of 8 min to FP of 45 min. Single rider from 35 min to 'we finally left the line' (8 people away from boarding) due to multiple breakdowns. I'm embarrassed to say how long we actually stuck it out. :headache:

Mater's is anywhere from 20 min to 45 min.

This is all my experience only YMMV. :goodvibes

Thanks. I'm just not sure which to do first: Luigi's or wait in line for RSR FP?

I appreciate this post as well. Yes, we all know Carsland is going to be crazy, but I would never avoid CA or DL because of it. There is so much fun to be had in all areas of the parks! I just don't even know how I'm going to fit it all in. :)

Wish I was going Post-HG (post Hydroguy -- saw that in another thread - LOL). I'd love to see the lights come on in Carsland, ride the Racers in the dark, and I don't know how to even fit it in a schedule. I have 3 nights and I always make fireworks a priority, and they often get cancelled due to wind. Also want to see WOC and F! Hope DD can endure some late nights and early mornings. :)

We are both so excited to see Carsland and everything else Disney has to offer. A bit of planning and patience and I know our trip will be the same fun it is every year, every hot, crowded summer we go!

Good to hear its gotten better since the SoCal APs were blocked out. I was there from the 17th to 19th, and the predictions were opposite of what happened. I had been anticipating a terribly crowded day on the 17th and outside of Carsland it was pretty moderate. However, the 19th, a Tuesday, we left halfway through the day because my crowd-phobia was kicking in in Critter Country even though we'd been planning on staying til the evening. Apparently that was one of those record attendance days, and just wading through the crowds going from Splash Mountain (which was up to a 105 minute wait), to TOT took us over half an hour when that would normally have been a 10 minute walk for us. I've been there on New Years Eve in the past and June 19th felt worse.

So, if going forward having the AP's blocked for the rest of the summer things are less crowded, that's great. For those of you that are going, just be prepared for either there being some crowds, know that your predictions may not be what happens, and enjoy if it turns out to be 'pretty calm'.
