We are avid pin traders (so avid that we wrote a book onit) The last time my family was in WDW, every Cast Member lanyard we saw was loaded with the same pins. I got suspicious when I saw the 6th mickey easter egg pin (it was August) on consecutive lanyards. I started making a list of pins that I didnt want my kids trading for as even though they looked legit, it was just way too fishy.
Sure enough when I checked on line I found pin sites in China that were selling bulk lots of the exact same pins. My kids were devastated that they had traded for fake pins and every trade they made after that, they were suspicious of every HM pin they saw.
Other than the repetition of certain pins, it was impossible to tell what was real and what was not. This was causing a serious crisis for my pin trading family.
Finally my daughter shrugged her shoulders and said, its not like we care if its valuable or not. We trade for them because we like them.
I think this is the real damage that the scrapper market has caused pin trading. There are so many scrappers out there that its almost impossible to avoid them and even though we dont plan on reselling our 2500+ pin collection anytime soon, everytime I look at our pin wall I wonder which ones are legit and which are fake, even though they were traded for in the parks.
I guess the only way we can really be sure is to pay full pop from a Disney retail location!
