last month, i left the contemp. at 3am, we headed up i4 and i95 to i26. when we hit i26, the traffic was starting to get heavy already. i use i26 i77 i81. but, if your in philly, 81 is north of you. but, alot less traffic. a few post ago sharadoc post how she went 81 and shes from the philly area.:thumbsup2

Ok, thanks... I will look for it...

I'm not sure I would drive from Philly to take 81 but it looks like some people have done that.

We leave from the Cherry Hill, NJ area which is pretty much just over Ben Franklin or Walt Whitman bridges and we've had good luck leaving around 2 or 3 am although you won't make it down there by dinner time.

If you leave around 10:00 pm you should get in around dinner time and avoid lots of traffic in DC area.

ok, thanks... we are leaning toward leaving around 10pm

I'm getting more passengers every day :) I put that route into AAA and it looks like it's much longer. I'm not sure what we're going to do yet. Still figuring :)

:thumbsup2 just remember, it maybe longer miles wise but time wise with out all that traffic, it probley is faster. what i do when i have to go some where for work or travel, (other than wdw) i ask a truck driver. we get alot of trucks in at work and every chance i get, i ask. they spend there life on the road and if theres a way around something, they know it. i still remember for our honeymoon going to wdw, we were 19. i didnt want to go around the dc balt. beltways and my dad had already passed away so i couldnt ask him. when i was a kid, i never paid attention to much which way he went. he also went a dif. way each time.:lmao: anyway, i asked a few truck drivers at work and they all told me the same thing. they can only drive so many miles in a 24 hour period so for them, time is eveything and sitting in traffic all counts for there time behind the wheel.:thumbsup2

We're heading down from CT on Saturday August 6th- leaving CT at 4 a.m. I was hoping we'd miss DC traffic because it's Saturday. We should be through there by 10 or 10:30. Does that sound okay?

I know others have already answered, but I can give you personal experience for sure. The answer is NO!!!!! Sadly you are getting there too late. In 2009 we hit DC around 10, traffic was already backed up and we sat basically in bumper to bumper traffic until we got off 95 and onto Route 1. Don't know if that was any better, but basically it took us 5 hours to get from DC to Richmond, a trip that normally should take 2. Bumper to bumper in the summer is the absolute WORST traffic.

Last year, we hit DC around 8:30 and breezed through.

This year, we hit DC at 6:30 and were SO confident that it would be great. Well, we took the beltway 495 West and had no idea they are replacing a bridge over the roadway. Almost all the lanes were closed. It took us 2 hours to go 7 miles. That is not a typo, 2 hours and 7 miles.

I was in such a panic but we did okay since we cleared DC by 9. There was a couple of slowdowns but NO stops but I think we were at the absolute latest time.

Your situation and timing may dictate the alternate 81 route or totally different timing, like leaving an hour or so earlier, or maybe find a good time to leave the night before and sleep in Maryland or Virginia.

Wow :scared1: I guess I really need to figure this out. Thanks!

We are planning on leaving the Ocean County NJ area around 3 pm and driving for about 6-7 hours...Now I am thinking this might be stupid and we are going to get caught in PM rush hour pretty much anyway we go on 95...we are planning on leaving the 17th and getting in at around dinner on the 18th. Does anyone have experience leaving in the afternoon?
Quite honestly, I have started reconsidering the cost of the airfare instead of driving!:confused3 (though it's cost prohibitive to fly! ;-( )

As fellow Ocean County residents who have driven 23 times to WDW since 2002, we strongly recommend that you do not leave in the afternoon.

We did. Once. In 2002. Our first drive, when we didn't know better. We barely made across the NC border after experiencing lots of traffic along the entire route. I-95 around southern MD and northern VA was particularly memorable. :scared1:

Since then, we leave early: very, very early. Think 3 a.m., not 3 p.m.

In any event, have a safe drive whenever you depart.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Thank you! This definitely helped...I booked a room only on the 18th (package starts 19th) so I have to figure this out! Do you normally stop or go straight thru?
Honestly, with my DH I don't think going straight is an option...that's why we were thinking of driving a few hours the 17th...back to the drawing board. I m still trying to think if I would rather hop on a plane

We have driven straight through eight times; in fact, our last six drives have been Ocean County-Lake Buena Vista treks. We stay in a Holiday Inn Express in Lake Buena Vista upon our evening arrival. The next morning we drive to our WDW hotel and let the magic begin.

Remember: one can't just "hop on a plane." The drive to the airport, check-in, TSA exams, the wait, the boarding, the flight, the exiting from the plane, the luggage wait, transportation to your WDW destination all add up.

Driving? You are in control. You can stop when you want. You can go to the bathroom when you want. You can eat and drink what you want and when you want. And you decide who sits next to you! Sure: there are occasional traffic jams but we'll take it over flying. However, an Ocean County-Disneyland trek is something else again.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Do you mean August 17th (coincidentally my b'day)? You won't get caught in rush hour traffic as bad weekdays during August around DC. Lots of folks on vacation, not as many folks working then.

You could still leave during the day, how about 11 am? You could get into South Carolina, maybe Florence and stop for the night. Then you'll only have 8 hours to WDW.

If it's another month, then please disregard all of the above advice ;)

Thanks so much for the post--True, true...I wish hopping on a plane actually was just hopping on a plane! Thank you...you made me feel better about driving. Everyone is looking forward to it-I am just nervous (guess cause we haven't done it in a few years and never with kids)

Thanks Sharadoc-I do mean August 17th (Happy Birthday a little early!) That is true about the traffic...I am scheduled to work the 17th until 2pm but maybe I can switch my day and head out earlier. ((We were figuring on leaving at 3pm and stopping around Emporia Va?))

(Driving straight is just not an option...we used to drive before we had kids and my husband can't drive at night-He falls asleep at the drop of a hat lol...Before I met him, he actually fell asleep behind the wheel and drove off the highway-thankfully he was not injured nor anyone else...Now knowing this, when we were dating once we drove to WDW and he started to nod off in NC (though he insists he wasn't)...that was probably when I thought flying was a better choice! So that's why we won't drive straight thru or at night! :sad2:)

Hey Everyone....I have been reading the thread off and on as we are driving from the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago in 17 days :cool1:

This is our first trip and we are driving down :confused3 (yeah I know).

Anyhow! I have read some threads on the board that it is best to take:

I355 - I80 - I57 - I24 - I75 - FL Turnpike..and make our way from there.

Is this the best route? Has anyone taken this lately to know roads & conditions etc since all the crazy weather (tornados, rain, etc) that all the midwest and southern states have gotten the last couple of months?

Also, we are debating between leaving on Friday night between 6-7pm or leaving around 6am in the morning saturday... thoughts?

(information to help with suggestions: we have two boys ages 7 & 9, dh and I are night owls so we tend to stay up late (around 1-2 in the am); we do take roadtrips downstate approximately 3-4 hours about once a month or every other month.)

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated...

Things that make you go "hmmm"...our plans just changed, now leaving from North Jersey also same time as Disneybride2002, around 3 or 4 pm! Was thinking of doing 95:scared1: to "save" an hour, but BC1836 may have just convinced me to head out 78 to the 81 route--which I know is a more civil route, but still I wanted to "save" an hour... Hoping to drive around 8-10 hrs the first day., maybe stop around Charlotte around 2am, ambitious, I know...

Safe travels and thanks everyone for the inspiration:yay:

Excited to be leaving in 27 days from Long Island. The plan is to leave Nassau County around 8PM or so and drive straight through. This will get us to the Grand Floridian hopefully around 2PM on 8/23, some pool time and then dinner at Citrico's. Happy travels to all!

So we just bought a 2010 Grand Caravan specifically with Disney trips in mind. We figured it was cheaper than renting a van to drive down once or twice a year from Ohio.

Now it is time to figure out how we can make the most of driving instead of flying. Gonna be an adventure with the little ones.

anyone else drive from Bucks County area? Or Princeton area even?

This will be my third drive down, and I have always left at 2 or 3 pm, after getting the kiddies from school. I have yet to hit that horrid DC traffic, but that may be because we plan it out so that we get pretty far then stop for dinner.

I think that dinner time break helps make the traffic go bye bye lol!

I'm still open to any and all advice/tips! will have a 10 yo and 5 yo :)

Quick question- how far do you usually get before you stop for dinner break?
