we never were in the same spot at the same time. i met sharon because we planned a meal together before we left. other than that, we were next door to her in the same hotel and only saw her once when i looked over the wall at the contemp.:lmao: its hard to be in the same spot unless you plan something before hand. dw and i are going back down on sept 27th for two weeks at okw.

We're long time readers of this thread although as you can see, we rarely post. We're going to be there the same 2 weeks as you in Sept-Oct, driving down from Northern NJ. We'd love to try to get together with you just to say hello because we feel like we know you from having read your posts over the years. I'll get in touch with you when we get closer if that's OK.

Quick update = posting from the road on 95 outside Richmond. 12 hours since we left OKW, have about 5 more. All is well, traffic has been great, smooth drive all the way.

Hoping to put together a real trip report for the first time. Had a lot of "firsts" this trip.

We have no countdown.:sad1: Still trying to figure out when to go next.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Driving 1312 miles each way from Rochester NY... starting July 15 through July 31.

I've got my Exit book, mapped all my segments and made note of good exists for food and gas stops. And most important noted Starbucks locations.

We're taking I-90 west to I-79 south to I-77, overnighting in Columbia SC.

Coming home we're taking I-81 so we can detour to Skyline drive for a few hours.

Can't wait!

Hello Everyone

I've been lurking on this board for a while and it has been very helpful planning our first WDW vacation. We leave in 2 weeks and are driving from the Scranton Pa area. I seen the 81-77-26-95-4 route, and it seems the best way for us. Did I mention that we are traveling with 6 kids?:scared1: Well a couple are teens , but same thing.:lmao: WE are debating on whether to stop over-nite or drive straight through. DH drives truck and is used to long distances, and I will drive also. If we drive straight through, or stop what times would you think to leave to avoid most major cities traffic. We check in on Saturday,7/16 and would leave either 7/14 or 7/15. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Terry

nj turnpike area is bc zone. sorry i cant help you out, your to far east for me. :thumbsup2

Once you get on the GSP you will eventually have to get on the NJTP (assuming you want to cross the DE Memorial Bridge and get on I-95 south) or you will end up too far south in NJ. The GSP and NJTP meet just north of the Raritan Bridge. Check your map and make a decision on the best route you want to take.

As for hotels near the NJTP, it's best to make your stay south of New Brunswick to avoid lots of congestion.

Good luck.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Thanks! Yes, I will be going over the DE Memorial Bridge, so even if I take the GSP, I will cut over to the NJT. I have gone a couple of different ways and I will have to put some thought into which way to take this time. Thanks for the suggestion on staying south of New Brunswick.

Hey fellow Rochesterian:wave2:

We just came back 2 weeks ago. We did 390, 86, 15, 81, 66, 17, 95. And we've done 90 to 79 to 77. We love the tunnels in VA.

Have a safe trip and please report back.

i would leave about 3am terry. the major is charlotte nc.. jacksonville can be fun also at rush hours but you should miss it. i would say its about 17 hours from scranton. if your husbands a truck driver he wont have any problem driving straight through. im an outside salesman and i drive the entire way but about 2 hours down and two hours coming home on straight through runs.:thumbsup2

We start driving in 12 hours!

I'm going to try to get some work done, go home and get 5 hours of sleep in before heading out. I would like to leave at 11pm, but midnight would be ok.

From Hartford - Taking 84-684 to the Tappan Zee Bridge (instead of the George Washington bridge)

then 287-78-81-77-26-95 to relatives in Jacksonville. Hope to be there for suppertime.

HI Everyone,

I have been following this thread for awhile now. We are making our first drive with the 4 kids in August. We are leaving on Friday, August 19th & driving straight through. I am looking at leaving late afternoon or early evening on the 19th, so the kids will sleep the majority of the ride. I am in the Exton/Downingtown area & the most direct route for me is down 202 to 95 & 95 straight through. After reading through the posts, I am thinking since we are leaving on a Friday in the summer it might be better to take the 81-77-26-95 route. According to Google Maps it is an hour & 15 minutes longer, but I am thinking with the shore traffic we would hit on 95 on a Friday evening we would be much better off on the 81-77-26-95 route. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Craig

hi craig, you will be better off the 81-77 route than trying to go down 95 on a friday afternnon in the summer. sharadoc left from your area 2 sat. ago on at 4am and sat in traffic for about 4 hours. i would say it will take you about 16-17 hours. i just did it in 16 hours but we dont stop for sit down meals just gas and pee stops. have a safe trip!:thumbsup2

Thanks dvczerfs! That is what I was thinking, I just needed some confirmation that I was making the right choice. If it is up to me, we'll be doing it the way you do - gas & pee stops only (hopefully not too many with the kids)!

i stop about every two-two and half area or so. we get out of the van, walk in and back out and hit the road. we dont putz around but it gives you min. to go to the restroom and stretch your legs. we bring food in the van and eat on the fly.you will hit some construction on i81 but nothing that should hold you up. you may hit smoke on i95 about 20 miles in on i95 in ga. there are swamp fires. if the wind is blowing the right way, it will be on i95. just put the a/c on recirc.:thumbsup2

Hello,

I'm another Rochesterian travelling down August 23-Sept 3. Planning to take the same route as C&G'sMama - we drive to Myrtle Beach every year and this is the route we take. Planning to leave August 23 around 4 PM and drive to Winchester VA, then leave there Aug 24 around 7 AM and drive to Jacksonville, stay overnight and only have about a 2 1/2 hr drive on Aug 25. We'll try and split the drive home in 2 days. The only problem is I HATE highway driving (actually I'm just the passenger, my husband does all the driving). I get really anxious that we're going to crash...it makes for a l-o-n-g drive. I'm trying to look forward to this...flying was just too $$ for 5 of us.....I wish I didn't get so stressed out driving
