If I'm at WDW and want to take a day at the beach, then you would suggest going west? Easy drive or a lot of traffic? Just one hour from WDW to St. Pete? This is something I've wanted to do each trip but so far it hasn't happened.

Yes, I think its well worth it! Beaches on the atlantic coast (Cocoa Beach, St Augustine, Ormond Beach...) Are nice, but not the same as the Gulf Coast. Run a trip on Mapquest or Expedia to be sure. :surfweb: but DH thinks its about 59 miles from St Pete Beach to Orlando. If you have a little wiggle room in your schedule, then I'd do it. While LOVE WDW, I really like the beach as well... I am glad we are anle to get both in this trip! Good luck in whatever you decide to do! :wizard:

We are driving down from Chicago leaving around 5 am (hubby wants to leave at 4 am)

Debating between 65 through Indiana/ Louisville, a familiar route for us, or head down through Illinois on 57/24.

I fear if we leave at 5 am, we hit Indy around 830 and traffic would suck around the beltway...

Also is it realistic to think we can make it to Valdosta by 7 or 8pm or should we plan on stopping around Tifton?

Thanks!

We drive down to FL several times a year from Chicago area. We have tried several different routes and prefer the 57 to 24 over the 65 to 24 route - much less truck traffic on 57. In fact, we just drove down 57 few days ago and there weren't very many trucks and very little construction. We leave Chicago around 9:30 to 10 am (CTZ)and make it to McDonough, GA around 8 -8:30 pm (ETZ). Valdosta is a couple of hours past where we stop - so leaving at 5am should get you there when you want.
Don't forget - Chicago is on central time and GA is on eastern so you lose an hour.

Thank You!! :wizard: I:wizard: hope its something that can be found helpful and may make someone's trip run a little smoother and more magical!??

St Augustine is pretty and nice, but I would rather drive an hour across the state to hit the white sugar-sand beaches and blue-green water of St pete Beach/Clearwater area instead! Well worth the trip!! Thats where we are heading before we hit WDW at the end of the week!! In reality - we should have done Disney first, and the relax at the beach second, but it didnt pan out that way this year... :confused3

thanks so much for the info. we really want to take advantage of having a car for this trip since we r driving a see the beach too. thanks for the tip. We might do it on the way home.:thumbsup2

Safe travels everyone! We came home yesterday...left Wilderness Lodge (how sad!) at 6:30 am and arrived home in Northern NJ at 11:30 pm, so 17 hours...an hour longer than our NJ to FL last week, but still pretty good time.
:thumbsup2

Wow! That seems like amazing timing! We are considering doing the drive from Northern Jersey as well (usually we do the auto train). Are there any stops you recommend? Do you ever stay over night somewhere?

Any updates on the I-95 paving project in GA which cost us one hour to drive 10 miles a week ago? :scared1:

All the best. :thumbsup2

Well its finally MY TURN!!! We are off to Orlando. Leaving RI at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, hoping to beat some of the terrible weather predicted in the east Saturday. I chickened out and we are taking Route 95 all the way down, instead of the planned Route 84

With any luck we will arrive safely in Orlando sometime tomorrow, after an overnight stop in the Carolina's-haven't figured that one out yet!!!

How did the trip down go??

Georgia traffic on 95 on a Saturday morning is slow. Not to mention State Troopers lurking in the bushes every few miles. Annoying.

We were so excited for our first family road trip this August...but now it may not happen or we may be minus one for the trip. My dh is looking at a possible layoff :sad2:

The good part is that he has a couple potential leads and might actually be able to jump ship before it sinks but we're concerned that he won't be able to get the time off after just starting a new job. Hopefully we'll know better in plenty of time but are considering our options. My first thought was to cancel all together if he can't get the time off but he suggested going without him. It wouldn't be the same but he would probably be able to fly down and meet us for part of the trip so I'm considering it.

My main concern is driving from NJ with 3 women and 4 children. Has anyone ever done a women & children only road trip? I'm a little worried from a safety perspective.

My first driving trip (actually down to a Disney cruise) was just me and my sister (2 forty something women) with no issues. We actually had a great time.

My trip in August will be me and my 12 year old niece. I really hadn't even thought/worried about traveling with just us.

I also am facing a potential layoff, but our trip is in May and it's paid for. So we're going forward as planned.

As for a women only trip. That's our family 2 moms, 2 kids. We've made the 1,250 mile one way trip several times. We don't drive late into the night. We always stay at Hampton Inns (or equivalent) We will be making our 15th trip together and 10th and 8th with kids DD will be 11 and DS will be 8.

Never had an issue with safety. There's only been one time we were going to stay at a particular Hampton Inn and we didn't feel comfortable with the area so we back tracked. Now we are so familiar with the route it's not an issue.

My biggest concern is my son and the bathroom. I will not let him go into a public restroom at a rest stop but I will let him go into a single bathroom at a convenience store, after I've poked my head in to make sure it's empty and I stand outside to wait for him. Then DP and DD stand outside with him while I go in the bathroom.

Good luck with everything.

I have made the trip from the Chicago area to Orlando with just myself and my son with no problems many times now. I did learn not to stop at rest areas after dark though. We drive all day and till usually around 3am with no issues stopping at gas stations or hotels when needed after dark. It is a bit empowering to do it alone knowing you can handle it after worrying about it before hand. My husband usually flies down and meets us for a few days while we are there too This year he is driving with us both ways for the first time in 6 years.

about 2200 mi RT for us and this will make our 6th road trip to Orlando from the Dallas area! We just set the car on autopilot and GO!

I am a single mom so it's just me and the kids when we drive to WDW. We haven't had any problems.:thumbsup2

Yep, I took travel notes this time! This is so late, but I'm posting anyway. Our Disney Halloween 2010 roadtrip timeline report:

On 10/29/10...

7:17pm - Left home! The 3 year old who was 2 years old back then was out like a light about 10 minutes after we loaded her into the car seat. Woo hoo!

8pm - Before exit 9A on the NJ Turnpike there was a paint truck doing road work out and plus there was an accident way up ahead so traffic was backed up.

8:12pm - Finally reached the very sad 5 car accident. :(

10:04pm - Reached last exit on NJ Turnpike to DE. Toll cost us $7.35. Lots of traffic because we don't have EZ Pass. We always say we're going to get the EZ Pass, but we always forget to do it.

10:21pm - A mile from exit 1A-1B Newark, DE - Middletown, DE. Toll cost us $3.00.

10:37pm - Reached Newark, DE toll plaza and paid $4.00...my notes are confusing me. Did we pay 3 or 4 bucks?? Hmmmmm.

11:06pm - Made it to Maryland House! Yay! Family tradition and we stop here no matter what's going on to visit and meet with other Disney Roadtrippers. There were none...look at the time Amirah! We usually get to MH around 3pm, but we chose to leave at night this time to avoid traffic...haha jokes on us because we sat in A LOT of traffic anyway. On a better note, I got to have a beloved Roy Rogers cheeseburger and we love those! We are health nuts (weren't always), but we have to have that nasty burger every time. This is the only time we get to see a Roy Rogers.

11:43pm - Left Maryland House with Starbucks and Roy Rogers. I ordered a lightly sweetened iced green tea and had my cheeseburger in hand. We were down to 3/4 of a tank so we filled up and paid $36.76.

10/30/10...

12:09am - Reached Fort McHenry tunnel toll.

3:17am - Hit 400 mi. mark on the speedometer. Cruisin' through Virginia.

4:01am - Crossed into North Carolina. Finally. Took a stp at a rest stop a few miles back and picked some of the "healthy" items on the menu from McDonald's to snack on and I'm not sure why we did this because we had tons of snack in the cooler in the car.

5:59am - Gas stop because we were mighty low. Total came to $41.04 to fill up. I'm not sure if Marathon Gas is a big company, but that's what we put into our tank at $2.75 per gallon. 29 miles to Lumberton, NC and 31 miles to South of the Border! Woo! We drove 95 south through NC alone like pitch black alone no cars in front or behind us or on the other side. Spookular!!!! Glad we didn't have to make any gas stops because we would have had to go off road. Eeeek! Remember this is out first time driving through the night.

6:31am - Arrived at South of the Border. Closed of course, but we drove through it and hti the restrooms. Restrooms were old and stinky as usual, but appeared to be kept cleaned on a regular basis.

8:13am - 100 miles to Savannah!!!!

8:49am - Passed the sign for the exit 42 to Yemassee, SC and that's my grandparents on my mom's side place of origin. Old Country South Carolina was what it was referred to back in the late 1800s. It great to see it again!

9:10am - Stopped at the Waffle House for breakfast. I ordered grits (haven't had grits in a long long time), eggs and pork bacon (omg haven't eaten bacon in a very long time)...hey were on vacation! We were right on the border of SC and GA. Back on the road at about 9:29am.

9:44am - Crossed Savannah River into Georgia.

10:25am - Traffic started at mile marker #60. The right lane was closed and there was massive road work going on (cones, truck lights, huge machines, etc.) - but no road work in progress. Lots of State Troopers so we were at snail pace at 45 mph for most of our time in GA. And while we were going through GA it started getting HOT. Wind in our hairs...wooooo hooooo! That's the weather we were looking for baby!!! Took us to get to GA to get it.

11:21am - Crossed into Florida!!!! Florida troopers were on the prowl too.

12:02pm - Gas stop in Jacksonville and it was so good to be back in Jacksonville. I love the freeway. Awesomeness. Gas cost us $43.50 to fill up the tank at $3.09 per gallon.

1:14pm - Entered into exit 260b to Rt. I4...we're getting close now! This was the longest ride of our lives for some reason. Everybody was ready to get out of the car and party at this point, but we had to get to destination Marriot Harbour Lake first.

2:05pm - Finally we reached exit 72 after seeing Disney and other attraction signs. We sorta wished we had chosen to stay down on Rt. 192 since we always do, but we decided to make a change this time and stay around the Sea World area so that's what we did.

3:02pm - WE'RE IN THE POOL!!!!! After checking in, grabbing our Owner's Locker (pure love), shimmying to shower and bringing all of our stuff into the villa we were finally pool bound. So relaxing!!!

The End!!!

With reading more and more about going the 57 route I having to wonder. In order for us to catch 65 we have to drive to indy, which is about 2 hours....I could catch 57 in an hour around champaign urbana.....what to do

Amirah, thanks for the recap! Reading your gas prices from then sure hurts now though. ;)

So, would you do the overnight again?

We are leaving about 2 days early for our trip and now I'm at a loss.

We are going to stop at Vanderbilt University on Friday for a college visit (any helpful hints for visiting here?).

This means we now leave Thursday and are thinking about stopping someplace in Paducah, KY or in that vicinity (taking the 57-24 way) if I can find a hotel that holds 6 in one room (I suppose we could do 2 rooms but I just prefer the 1 room version if I can).

Originally we thought we could just leave super early and get there in time for the college visit but my dad advised against it (although I think we still could) but there is also the chance with driving of unforseen delays. Since we have to be there at a specific time I could see myself getting freaked out if things don't go well.

Because of this though, we are then just going to stay in Chattanooga Friday night at the hotel we originally planned to stay at on Saturday. It also means we are going to get to Disney a day early. I haven't decided what we are doing yet for where we are staying. I don't want to mess with the reservation I already have because it's paid in full, etc...

Alrighty all you drivers.. I am in the market for a new GPS.. what one do you recommend?
I've only had one GPS, but I'm extremely pleased with it.
Garmin Nuvi 265T

$87 on Amazon.com (I paid $105 from Amazon last year)

- Extremely easy to use
- Free, live traffic updates (for life)
- It will (most of the time) find another route for you to avoid heavy traffic
- Can use its Bluetooth feature so that you can use your cell phone hands-free
- Thousands and thousands of POIs (Points Of Interest)
- Verbal directions

We bought it last year for our drive to Florida from Connecticut. Twice it routed us around bad traffic. More importantly, the POIs helped us find gas, food and hotels. It even has phone numbers for the hotels so that you can call and ask for availability. We had some fun with it too... you can use your own voice to give the turning directions...we recorded my 10 yo DS voice for the trip.

The Garmin Nuvi 265WT is the same unit, only it is a wide screen. IMHO, the extra $28 for the WT is not worth it.

My only complaint is the suction-cup that is provided with the unit to mount the GPS to your dash/windshield. After a week or so it comes loose and the GPS will unexpectedly fall to the floor of your car. Search the internet for a vent-mounted mount...works on almost all air conditioning vents and your GPS will never come loose.
