Foot surgery

I'm not sure where to ask this question, but hopefully someone might be able to help. I am having bunion surgery in the beginning of October, and we have a Disney trip planned for the week after Christmas! If all goes according to plan (no complications) should I be able to walk okay for our trip? Does anyone have any experience with this type of surgery? I could always rent a scooter if I had to, I guess, but I'd rather not! Thanks.

I have had both feet done and with screws in the joint. Last one we went 3 1/2 months after surgery. Some swelling but I did ok.
Ask your surgeon. I was doing ok walking 6 weeks After when I returned to work. Good luck!

Did you ask the surgeon what he recommends?
Everyone is different and your recovery will be based on exactly what is done for your surgery.

What To Expect After Surgery (taken from WebMD)

The usual recovery period after bunion surgery is 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on the amount of soft tissue and bone affected. Complete healing may take as long as 1 year.


When you are showering or bathing, the foot must be kept covered to keep the stitches dry.
Stitches are removed after 7 to 21 days.
Pins that stick out of the foot are usually removed in 3 to 4 weeks. But in some cases they are left in place for up to 6 weeks.
Walking casts, splints, special shoes, or wooden shoes are sometimes used. Regular shoes can sometimes be worn in about 4 to 5 weeks, but some procedures require wearing special shoes for about 8 weeks after surgery. Many activities can be resumed in about 6 to 8 weeks.
After some procedures, no weight can be put on the foot for 6 to 8 weeks. Then there are a few more weeks of partial weight-bearing with the foot in a special shoe or boot to keep the bones and soft tissues steady as they heal.

I had both feet done. My surgeon used removable pins. I had my surgeries 4 months apart. I was only out of work 2 weeks with each but didn't drive for 6 weeks when I had my right foot done.

The first couple of days post surgery were pretty tough because I couldn't tolerate the pain meds. The 2nd surgery was better because I didn't even try anything other than Motrin so at least I wasn't feeling sick.

With the pin sticking out of my foot it was very important to keep my foot dry. I found it well worth the money to purchase a cast cover to keep it dry. So much easier than trying to use a plastic bag.

I was in a lot of pain pre surgery. I had the surgeries because the bunions were impacting my park touring. My feet are definitely better than they were pre surgery but now 3 years later one foot has been bothering me. Different pain than before surgery. More in tha ball of my foot than the joint. I really need to go back to my dr but haven't had the time and am not sure how much dr can do for me.

With my first foot (the one that worse pre surgery) I would have been OK with a WDW trip 4 months later but not a commando trip. When I first went to my dr I already had a trip booked 3 months out and he wouldn't do the surgery til after that trip. With my 2nd foot (less pain pre surgery but more arthritis per dr) the recovery was slower. I think it would have been a challenge to do WDW at 4 months. I did go 5 months post surgery and don't remember it being too bad. Have never rented a wheel chair.

I'm actually recouping from this surgery now. I had my left foot done July 30th, and as a nurse, my doctor is keeping me out of work for 10-12 weeks. I'm doing ok at this point walking around and standing for awhile but I don't think I could do intensive walking yet. However, like a PP said, every person is different. Physical therapy is definitely helping to increase the length of time I'm walking around. I also limp/hobble on that foot still so my hip usually hurts before my foot. Definitely talk to your surgeon about it best of luck

Couple of things that effect recovery, age and smoking. They slow healing down a bit. First thing to do is call your surgeon and talk with them.

If worse comes to worst, you can always rent a wheelchair whether you need it all day or just for the longest walks.

He did have a pretty bad case though, screws in 1 toe and pins in another on the same foot. Ask your surgeon, they'll know best how your foot is doing. You can always rent a wheelchair if you need to.

I've had the surgery on both my feet, with two pins in my right foot and one in my left. Two weeks after the surgery, I was walking fine. Granted, it wasn't Disney distance, but I was walking. Given that you will have 2.5 months to heal, I would say you will be fine. Just remember to take breaks. Even now, 8 years and 2 years after each surgery, sometimes I get a little pained. Just get off your feet for a little bit if they hurt.

Whoa!!! 3 months? I think we're talking about different surgeries. I had the surgery on Friday and was hanging out at my dad's on Saturday and Sunday and back at work on Monday. Yes, it was on crutches, but I was back at work. I could wear my regular sneakers two weeks afterwards.

Depends on whether the bone is cut or not. I was in a surgical shoe for 6 weeks with screws in the toe and the way the bone was cut
