Long story short. I injured my foot about 8 weeks ago and it is not healing right. The doctors are giving it 4 more weeks and if no improvements are made, they are going to have to put pins in my foot. (I injured my linsfranc ligament.) We have a family disney trip planned for the end of Sept. If they put pins in, I will not be mobile for our trip. I don't know whether to cancel/postpone our trip or use a wheelchair. I don't want to cause a hassle for the others in my party and I have had a very had time with my limited mobility and the tremendous pain I've been in for the last 2 months. I thought I could come here to find support and suggestions. Thanks for listening and for any suggestions.

Hi, and :welcome: to disABILTIES!

You might want to click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information.

When you say "not mobile" in the event they have to put in pins, will this mean no walking at all or just very limited? You might want to look at some of the threads about people with questions about ECVs; it sounds like you will be needing one, as you definitely will be having a disability (although hopefully only temporary).

You will find that WDW is probobly the most disabled-friendly place you can go to. Please ask further quesitons; we will try to help you as much as we can.

Not really sure at this point how mobile I will be. Probably on crutches. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check these areas out.

Firstly, much sympathy, I know what it's like to hurt like that . Secondly, don't cancel you're trip: Disney is really accessible and also one of the best cures (or at least distractions from) pain that I've ever found. It looks like an ECV or wheelchair may be a must in this case, but don't worry about being a 'hassle', everyone will have a much better holiday with you on wheels than in pain. If you get an ECV you'll be able to move yourself around the whole park, and it should give you a bit more independence.

EDIT: If you're on crutches, make sure you get a wheelchair or ECV with crutch holders fitted. You can get this from most, if not all of the off site rental companies, and it'll keep them out of the way, but handy for when you need them.

Good luck, I hope everything recovers without the need for surgery, and that you bounce back soon.

Have a great holiday, whether on wheels or off :goodvibes !

Be sure to look at some of the links in the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

I agree with the 'don't cancel' suggestions. If you do cancel, you may not know when would be a better time to schedule it for. WDW is very accessible, and with some advance planning and an ECV, you will be able to have a great time.

I also say go ahead and enjoy! I visited WDW in April for one day in a walking cast awaiting surgery. Thanks to the good advice on this forum, I knew what to do. I had a great visit to Magic Kingdom in my lovely rental wheelchair. There was no way I could have walked any distance due to the pain. I'm sure you will still have a great time. I know I was impressed with the accessibility that I found. Good luck with your surgery also.:thumbsup2

We just got back on Sunday from 9 days in WDW.

On the day we left, DH broke his big toe that morning. (I know it's not the same type of injury as your, but boy...he was in pain.)

Well, we rented an ECV from Walker Mobility for the entire length of our stay....that really helped. There was no way he could walk around the parks.

UPDATE: First of all, thank everyone so much for the words of encourgement and suggestions. I've made up my mind the Sept will happen unless my doctor does not recommend it. I went to the doctor this week, and they are planning on putting a cable in my foot to align the bones. This hopefully will happen next week. Recovery period is 3 months, and my doctor indicated Disney should not be a problem. I'll be on crutches for 6 weeks and then will be in a boot I can walk on. I've gone for a CT and will get the results Monday. This will let them know more in detail what we are looking at. I'm just glad to see a light at the end of the tunnel. You know they say something good comes from everything. Well, for anyone who has any type of disability, I have gained A LOT more appreciation and respect for what you go through everyday. I have been so blessed for good health and mobility for 35 years and should return there soon. I didn't realize how forturnate I was until this. Again, thanks to everyone for your support.
