Awhile back when i found out I had high blood pressure I found 3 foods that helped lower it naturally, unsalted peanuts, plums, and celery. Now I have found that my cholesterol is very high and the dr. is giving me on month to bring it down on my own. He gave me a diet to follow, but I was wondering if anyone has found certain foods or combination of foods that help lower cholesterol. thanks!

I've heard oatmeal and Cheerios. I do eat oatmeal 4-5x a week, but I don't know if it has any effect or not. I only get my cholesterol checked once a year...

We had a family member who had this happen. He was able to bring his down eating unsalted, un-fooled-around-with almonds. He usually just carries a produce bag from the grocery store with him and munches a few times a day.

I am sure you could run a google search for "Cholestrol lowering foods" and see what comes up. Otherwise, WebMD.com might be a good resource.

Good luck!

My mother needed to lower her cholesterol and the dr recommended her to check out the American Heart Association website... I know some of the things were beans, peas, cereals, whole grains, oatmeal...
if you drink whole milk go the one below that...
I hope this helped and GL in lowering it!! :cheer2:

If you love butter I have the answer to your prayers.

Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread. It is wonderful. You can get it at Trader Joes & Giant. It is an Non-GMO 100% expeller-Pressed oils.
Non-Hydrogenated. 100% Vegan. 0% cholesterol. The label claims it helps improve cholesterol ratio.

I found when I lowered my fat and sodium intake my cholesterol #s decreased

almonds or other unsalted nuts

oat cereal or oatmeal - 1½ cups of oatmeal or 3 cups of dry oat cereals to have a significant effect

other grains that are high in soluble fiber like barley and rice bran

salmon or other fish with high omega-3 content such us sardines and tuna or salmon oil supplements, but don't take them if you are taking a blood thinner drug because these supplements may further thin your blood.

high fiber fruits and veggies

beans and legumes (provides fiber)

soy - 2 cups of soy milk or eat 4 ounces of tofu to get a cholesterol-lowering effect

for cooking use vegetable oils - olive, canola, peanut, corn, and soy oils

Also, I just read about 2 new margarines, Benecol and Take Control, which contain stanol esters and plant sterols that block the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines. In recent studies they have decreased cholesterol levels by 10%.

Mr Dr just sent me a recommended diet to lower cholesterol. The posters have given good advice.
I will list some of the foods to avoid.
1. Meats, Fish: Marbled beef, pork, bacon, sausage and other pork products, fatty bowl (duck, goose), skin and fat of turkey and chicken, processed meats, luncheon meats (salami, balogna), frankfurters and fast-food hamburgers, canned fish packed in oil.
2. Eggs: Limit egg yolks to two per week
3. Fruits: Coconuts
4. Vegetables: Avoid avocados. Starchy vegetables (potatoes, corn, lima beans, dried peas, beans) may be used only if substitues for a serving of bread or cereal, (baked potato skin, however, is desirable for its fiber content).
5. Beans: Commercial baked beans with sugar and or pork added.
6. Nuts: Avoid nuts: limit peanuts and walnuts to one tablespoonful per day.
7. Breads, Grains: Any baked goods with shortening and/or sugar. Commercial mixes with dried eggs and whole milk. Avoid sweet rolls, doughnuts, breakfast pastries and sweetened packaged cereals.
8. Milk Products: Whole milk and whole-milk packaged goods, cream, ice cream, whole milk puddings, yogurt or cheeses; nondairy cream substitutes
9. Fats, Oils: butter, lard, animal fats, bacon drippings, gravies, cream sauces, as well as palm and coconut oils.
10. Desserts, Snacks: Fried snack foods like potato chips, chocolate, candies in general, jams, jellies, syrups, whole-milk puddings, ice cream and milk sherbets, hydrogenated peanut butter.
11. Beverages: Sugared fruit juices and soft drinks, cocoa made with whole milk and/or sugar. When using alcohol (1 oz. liquor, 5 oz beer and 2 1/2 oz dry table wine per serving) one serving must be substituted for one bread or cereal serving. Limit two servings of alchhol per day.

Well, I am tired just typing this. I don't like these avoid foods, since I am a candy eater and milk drinker.
I am a 60yo F,5'2" 131 lbs, cholesterol 209, triglycerides 184.
