In looking at some of the menu changes at Disney, it seems that there has been a trend toward Asain fare at many of the resturants.
Has anyone else seen this trend and if so, why?
I get Asian is good and popular, but I will be missing many of the foods (in epcot) that although I would not call them traditional, at least had a better representaion of foods specific to that area.

I don't see the Asian trend :confused3 especially in Epcot. What foods are you referring to?

The Wave (replacing Concorse steak rumored to be Asian)
Sunshine Seasons (Asian Wok Shop)
Yak & Yeti
Tommorowland Noodle Station

and look at the new Lecellier Menu .. udon noodles and peanut sauce but no maple flavoring with anything :confused3

It is everywhere, do you watch the Food Network or Top Chefs on Bravo?? Everything has an asian influence now, but we love it!

LOVE THE FOOD NETWORK.... duff,(Charm City Cakes/Ace of Cakes), Iron Chef... all the cahallenges shows, but really haven't seen any of the "cooking shows" in a while :sad1: I guess grilling with bobby flay and emeril and mario batali are out??? DH and I have missed their presence...
ALso Love alton Brown...

I guess it's the only type of food I am not a Big fan of... so maybe I notice it more...

The Wave (I don't know about it, but I suspect - from talking to a bartender - that it's more of an asian-influenced or asian-fusion)
Sunshine Seasons -- food court, one station is the Asian Wok Shop
Yak & Yeti -- I know this is asian food, but I sure wouldn't call it good asian food, I wouldn't even call it mall-food-court good
Tomorrowland Noodle Station -- this was great when they were really serving asian food and when it was open, it seems to be open seasonally now and the menu is a constantly spinning roulette wheel of bad surprises; very disappointed that they "tweeked" this menu from the original asian recipe

The Wave has several rumors surrounding t, including that it'll be the same menu as currently at Concourse Steakhouse

Sunshine has always had a variety of stations (MKCP summer 90 and that's where I worked) I think this was added years ago because it was something that people were comfortable with that wasn't another burger or PB & J.

Yak & Yeti is in the Asia area of AK, so it makes sense that they would have Asian inspired food just as Tusker House has African inspired food.

Tomorrowland Noodle Station, is it ever actually open?

Le Cellier, I don't know why they got rid of the maple flavored items :confused3 , but I do know that there is a very large group of Asian Canadians living in Canada, so adding that to the menu does reflect Canada.

Thank you! And you are welcome for Le Cellier! DH is so bummed that the BBQ filet is gone :guilty:

FYI, we went to Le Cellier for lunch Feb 07 and they had the best dish ever, beef tips with stir fry veggies and udon noodles in a asian sauce, it was amazing and I am still bumming that the took it off the menu

One more thing, last week we had egg rolls and ice tea from the Tomorrowland Noodle Terrace, it was open the entire week from 5 to Close only. There was 3 CM's walking around with electronic clipboards talking to the diners about their meal. When the one CM got to us he asked us if we liked the food, NO but the ice tea is great, would we come back, YES but for ice tea only, would we recommend it to friends, NO, did we find the menu limited, YES VERY, did we find the quality of food ok, NO IT IS YUCKY FATTY DARK MEAT etc etc.

He said that was the general consensus...no one it very happy with the food here. Hopefully they will change it, maybe to a killer pizza place with REAL FIRE OVENS! Not the cooking heat lamps. Have great meatball, veal cutlet, eggplant, cheese steak and italian subs!

Does any of this answer the question...
Regardless of reason, quality or influence... do or do you not see an asian trend...
I guess based on your confirmation's, I would still be inclined to say yes!
(and these are only the few places that I have noticed)
:goodvibes

No, not really. Especially not in Epcot. Yak and Yeti is certainly Asian, but that's understandable. Sunshine Seasons isn't a wok shop, though. I got a veggie Cuban sandwich there--that's hardly Asian. It's not "new", either. Neither is Tomorrowland Terrace. There are newer restaurants at Saratoga Springs that aren't Asian. There's also a new restaurant and lounge in Coronado Springs; not Asian. And there's the upcoming T-Rex Cafe--it's not Asian, either. http://www.trexcafe.com/Main/Eat.htm

Most of the WDW restaurants--other than in World Showcase or Africa/Asia in AK--have very strong American and Italian influences. At least, that's how it seems to me. There are exceptions, of course. (I don't see anything wrong with having nothing but Asian food, anyway. It's great.)

No, I really don't see an Asian trend.

I did not indicate that it was "new" nor overwhelming.. simply that it is there.
This is one type of food, that I feel is often poorly prepared if not done correctly, based on the type business disney is and on the reviews.. I think this is the case.
Sometime if you cannot do something well, you should stick to what you can, regardless of popularity.
just sayin' is all ;)

:confused3 There should be no Asian food because you don't think it's cooked properly?

Your first post asks if we notice a "trend" towards it, which would indicate you're asking us if we notice that new restaurants are Asian, or if we notice that there are new dishes at existing restaurants that are more Asian than not. I don't see this trend.

.....but I see you reading between the lines, maybe even more than that.. putting words in my mouth.. did not, nor am I implying there should be NO Asain food....

If you do not, that is fine, but don't criticize me if I do.

I thought this was a discussion board...:confused3
:goodvibes

I'm not sure what many foods in Epcot you are referring to other than your LeCellier reference.

I don't see the trend either.

I'm not criticizing you, I'm disagreeing with you. I don't see a trend, and I gave reasons why. Perhaps I'm not understanding your original question.

OP, I know what exactly what you're talking about...

It seems like there HAS been a lot of talk on the boards lately about restaurants with Asian inspired dishes.

First, the recent menu changes at Ohana, especially subsituting the noodles with peanuts for the potatoes.

Second, the recent menu changes at Le Cellier. I agree, the maple filet seemed much more Canadian, eh? than the new noodle dish they are offering.

Third, the Concourse steakhouse closing and The Wave, which is reported to be an Asian fusion or inspired restaurant opening in it's stead.

Fourth, Yak and Yeti opening in AK, and it's menu is Asian themed.

Fifth, lots of talk and reviews about Teppan Edo and Tokyo Dining, which opened within the last year.

No one can say that these topics haven't been hot for the past few months, and I can definitely say that I'm not too excited about them either, as I'm not a big fan of Asian-inspired food at all, except maybe Japanese like Teppan Edo or Tokyo Dining. We're not going to change our ADRs at Ohana or Le Cellier over them, but you won't see me eating at Kona or Yak and Yeti anytime soon. And I'm sure that's just fine, as others will gladly take those restaurants!
