I posted this on the transportation board, but will post it here as well. In a few weeks my sister and I are going to be flying from Detroit to LA. Its a 5 hour, nonstop flight which leaves mid-morning. On the other flights we've taken food really wasn't an issue since they were much shorter, but we will be in the air when we normally eat lunch and want to take something with us, but aren't quite sure what would be a good option to take. Ideally we would like to get something that we can purchase before we get to the airport since it will be cheaper, but Detroit Metro has a fairly decent selection of stores inside of it.

What kind of foods would be good to take on a 5 hour flight?

Thanks!

HI.

I fly from JFK when I go to Disneyland so I have almost a 6 hour flight.
I usually pack crackers, granola bars, bananas and apples, usually a stack of Pringles (they charge $3 on the plane) and usually I buy a bag of Hershey's chocolate. I also love to take peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with me.

When we fly to Mexico (6 am flight our time, arriving at 4 pm their time) we bring lots of things... some airlines also sell food to eat on the plane... but for us, I pack a soft side small cooler with cheese, raw almonds, sliced fruit and veggies, baggies of snacky stuff-like cheerios, pretzels, rice cakes...

Call me dumbo, but I did not think you could take food past the security gates anymore. Since I believed this to be true I always buy food once I have passed the security gate and have reached the concourse. There is usually a huge choice of restaurants, and fast food places to choose from. So, someone in the know enlighten me PLZ!:confused3 :tink:

You can bring prepared food like sandwiches and such. No bottle of mayo and sandwich fixings, but the whole sandwich.

No big things of liquid, of course. Some people buy water after security; others bring an empty bottle and fill it from a water fountain after security.

This is a good page of permitted and prohibited items. Lots of good info there!

You can't take drinks or liquids past security but you can take food. Uncrustable sands, snacks etc ok. Buy the drinks past security

I like buying an entree salad from a vendor past security. Salads hold up pretty well (unlike hot foods), don't invade other people's space with strong smells, and is easier on the stomach in flight than something greasy. I would buy an airline snackbox only in an emergency - they don't look appetizing at all!

I don't know about your airport, but we have a pretty good selection of restaurants and lots of carry-on food available. Things that hold up pretty well and don't have to be eaten hot, like sandwiches and salads. I can only stand munchies for so long...after that I need something more substantial, especially if flying during regular meal times.

We have a subway in our airport in Indy - I always like to get a sandwich there. DW prefers to pack sandwich, and brings lunchables for the kids. No beverages through security, but yes, prepared foods (even prepared at home and brought through in a smaller lunch cooler) is just fine. I once saw a family bringing an entire pizza with them through security last year.
