Food through security?

Odd question - and I can't seem to find it on the TSA website. Is food such as applesauce/pudding considered a 'liquid' or 'gel'? I know it sounds crazy, but you never know these days!

I would err on the side of caution and say yes they will consider it liquid or gel. I was not able to bring peanut butter because as the security guy told me, "It says creamy, so it's cream." I don't agree since cream has a much different consistency but there was no way I was going to argue with him.

I would err on the side of caution and say it may be considered a liquid. I was bringing my father a few cans of Polish Pate during Christmas. It took a good 2 minutes to convince security that it was 'the consistency of cat food' and really wasn't liquid (apparently, the lady had never heard of Pate, but a got a real kick out of human 'cat food'). She shook the cans and listened to it 'rattle' and ensured it wasn't swooshing. I would worry that Apple Sauce is a lot more swooshy.

Yes, it is considered a liquid - i think the peanut butter thing was a bit strict! I would recommend avoiding the aggravation & making a quick supermarket run when you arrive. Sorry!

Applesauce would be considered a liquid. They explained it to me as anything that can be poured or spread. They even said liquids included lipstick, lip gloss and mascara.

I thought I read somewhere that if you bring through a PB sandwich, already made, that is OK, but it's the tubs of PB they won't allow through. So if you're just bringing something eat for the trip, then bring pre-made sandwiches, and I bet that would be fine. I agree I would err on the side of caution and not bring the pudding. If you're packing food to eat after you're checked into your hotel, you can put those items in your checked bags. I would just make sure to double or triple bag them in case something breaks open.

Solid lipstick is okay, but tube lipstick (lipstuff?) isn't. Well, you need to count it as a liquid.

I used to be a travela gent, so we talked about this stuff all day long! :rolleyes1

Our "homemade" peanut butter crackers made it through last time. But I have never tried a jar of pnut btr.

You can bring PB if it is already on a sandwich (cracker or bread). If you are taking a jar, it would have to be less than 3.4oz and in your baggie. Apple sauce and pudding would also have to be less than 3.4oz and in your baggie.

My GF had her mascara and lip gloss tossed by security in March. Security in Kansas City let the applesauce go through because were the small containers and I explained that it was kids breakfast, but I think this was an exception. Also, be cautious about the peanut butter because if anyone has allergy on plane, kids will not be allowed to eat items you have brought with you for snack.

for the most part the rule is "if it doesn't hold it's shape outside the continer it's a liquid/gel. That is the only thing I can remember DH telling me, he works for TSA, but I think there are exceptions for people traveling with kids. DH is out of town for a class but I will ask him for sure when he gets home tonight. If they are in small enough containers, less than 3oz and you have them in a zip lock bag then there should be no issue at all.

I didn't even think about it a few years ago and i packed applesauce for the plane and I was stopped and it was taken - it is gel.

How would they know that there's a peanut allergy?

They (airplane people) make an announcement. If they are doing it right (and if the allergic person is doing it right) they'll announce it when you are still at the gate, so you could go buy something else, but sometimes it only gets announced on the plane. As far as I know, they cannot actually forbid you have eating whatever you want though (not getting into an argument about the ethics/morals/whatever about eating peanuts after such an announcement, just stating a fact).

I have to be honest though - I've only had this happen once and I've had to be on close 500 flights in my life (including at least 100 in the past 4 years).
