Food suggestions for Christmas Eve..

We have had a fondue in the past. We bring the kitchen table out into the living room, switch on the Christmas tree, light the candles, turn on the gas fireplace and have a lovely slow evening. It is great and very relaxing. Our DS9 loved it being able to cook his own food. We have chicken cubes, ham cubes, shrimp, mushrooms, cheese and dip in batter (tempura works best we've found) and cook in hot oil fondue. We actually had it for THanksgiving this year cause my Mom didn't want to fuss with a turkey and it was her turn this year. We're definately having turkey and ham for Christmas though! I think this year we'll just do the appetizer thing, cheese ball, potato skins, cheese sticks, mushrooms etc! Have fun everyone!

I usually serve lasagna rollups, italian bread, focaccia bread, shrimp, cheese, fruit and cracker tray, veggies and dip, along with chips, dips. HOmemade cookies and maybe something great from Costco for desert. Really easy is tortilla chips and a block of cream cheese with salsa poured over. Everyone always loves it. (Costco has the best ----yes I love that store too !)

In our family Christmas Eve was usually sliced smoked sausage baked with a little butter and paprika, fresh veggie trays, olive trays, cheese and crackers and some finger food type desserts. If you want a more standard meal what about ham, since many will have turkey the next day?

Christmas Swedish Porridge - (Julgrot)

Christmas rice porridge is a part of the traditional Christmas Eve supper. According to an old Swedish tradition and practiced in many homes in America, each person must compose and recite a rhyme before touching the porridge and the one who gets the almond hidden in the porridge will marry during the coming year.

2 quarts water
1 cup rice
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons sugar
5 cups milk
1 blanched whole almond
Ground cinnamon for sprinkling
Sugar for sprinkling
Grated almonds for sprinkling
Cold milk for accompaniment
In large saucepan bring water to boil; add rice bring to a boil and cook, uncovered, 1 minute. Drain rice thoroughly. Place rice, butter, salt and sugar with milk in top of double boiler. Cover and cook over low-simmering water until rice is tender and milk is absorbed, about 2 hours.
Pour into serving dish and stir in almond. Sprinkle top generously with cinnamon, sugar and grated almonds. Serve with cold milk.
Makes 8 servings.

Such great ideas!!

So far I think I have decided on hot sausage, peppers, and sauce in the crock pot - with Italian sub rolls..

Crackers and cheese..

Maybe a pasta salad - and a tossed salad..

A fruit tray from the market (melons and such)..

Lots and lots of COOKIES...... :)

What else would go good with that stuff?

because my DH always has to work on Christmas eve, and I do some years, our tradition is steaks on the grill (it's a hoot in Indiana in December),crab legs, loaded baked potatoes and salad with all the toppings. The kids really look forward to our "special dinner" I have tried to vary the menu, but they always complain, so I guess its the same thing again this year.

We get a heavenly ham and do ham sandwiches with simple sides. Mmmmm I think I like it better than dinner on Christmas Day.

We do appetizers, etc. This year we are doing Hot Dagos, Caesar salad, and desert.

We do family Christmases in the weeks before Christmas so we can relax and enjoy the actual day. And it is appetizers at both of them, too...
