Food Question? Jambalaya?

Does anyone know if there is any place to get Jambalaya besides BB? I want to go to BB but was planning on just dessert (budget), but there is NO WAY! dh is missing out on a chance for jambalaya. I was thinking that maybe if it was offered somewhere else without the $30 price tag, it would be a good compromise.

Ralph Brenna has a pastalaya witch is to die for. Don;t remember if they have regular Jambalaya. check all ears for the latest menue offerings

Ralph Brennan's in DTD also has regular (seafood on rice) jambalaya that's DELICIOUS, but costs about as much as the jambalaya at Blue Bayou. I've had both BB's jambalaya & RB's jambalaya, and they're both really, really good

And...I've had the jambalaya at French Market and...as someone who knows what Cajun/Creole food should taste like...I wouldn't feed FM's version of it to my dog . Seriously, it was up there on the list of "Worst Meals I've Ever Eaten"

Cafe Orleans, they share a kitchen with BB so the gumbo you get at CO is the same as the gumbo you get at BB. BUT it's a much smaller version, just a bowl of gumbo. It's good tho......love that gumbo!!

Are you local? Do you live in SoCal? Will you be in SoCal for a few days, and have a car? If so, there is a very well-regarded and acclaimed place (not a sit-down place, but a walk-up) called the Gumbo Pot up here in the Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles (also where The Grove is, very near LACMA and the Tar Pits, etc.). The owners are from New Orleans so they know how to do it up right!! (They serve beignets, jambalaya, muffulettas, po' boys, gumbo, all the goodies!)

Not just for the Gumbo Pot, but also for the pastry booths (there are a couple that have delicious European pastries, freshly made, at prices comparable to what you'd pay for a gross, dry cupcake/donut at a regular grocery store bakery ), and the produce stands = ...you could get some snacks to take back to your hotel room.

Absolutely! There is and always has been some great food at Farmers Market. So many of the businesses there are mom & pop/family-owned establishments run by people who have been there for decades, so the food at a lot of the little stands (I am not counting the newer sit-down restaurants that were added when The Grove was built) is like what they would make at their homes. The Grove turned out to be both a help and a hindrance to Farmers Market, as it drove away some of those mom & pop places (such as my favorite place, which made the best meatball sandwiches I had tasted!!), but it also attracted a lot of extra business into the existing ones in FM.

Anyway, between the Gumbo Pot and Magee's corned beef/roast beef, Gill's Old Fashioned Ice Cream, Bob's Doughnuts, Thee's Bakery (fantastic cakes), Dupar's, freshly made English toffee, peanut brittle and chocolate at Littlejohn's, etc., you can get some yummy food at FM. There's also Italian, Greek, Mexican, Chinese, BBQ, healthy stuff, there are cupcakes and cookies and pies and cakes, there are fresh baked breads and French/gourmet cheeses - just a ton of good stuff, and the Gumbo Pot too!

So, OP, depending on how long you will be in SoCal and if you will have transportation, definitely take a drive up to L.A./Beverly Hills/Hollywood (about 45 minutes away from Anaheim with NO traffic) and go to the Farmers Market/The Grove to sample the Gumbo Pot as well as all the other great offerings. There is a lot to do up in this area, so it is well worth a day trip - but only if it is not going to take away precious time from your DLR visit!!

Sherry, I'm originally from So. Cal (Ventura Co.) and moved to Central Cali a few years ago, so it's still not to far. (we're driving down). We're coming in early Mon. evening but not entering DL till Tues.(staying till Fri.) The Farmers Market might be great to do the evening we come in! Do you know if it runs till the evening?

I'm not sure what your dates are, but you can check the hours for Farmers Market on their website:

During some times of year, they stay open later. It can be confusing because The Grove - which is a lovely outdoor mall and also a great place to spend an afternoon (and celebrity-watch!) - is literally a continuation of the Farmers Market path (there is really no separation between the two at all) but they are considered two separate establishments. So The Grove may have extended hours while the vendors inside the Farmers Market, like the Gumbo Pot and the bakeries with all the delicious treats, may close early.

So if FM is not open on the evening you drive in, maybe you can leave DLR a bit early in the day on Friday and stop in L.A. to visit Farmers Market to grab some jambalaya?

Things got weird with the Farmers Market hours after The Grove opened up next door. FM got rid of some of the mom & pop places that had been there (not all of them, though!) and added in some new outdoor restaurants that LOOK like they are part of The Grove, but are actually considered part of the Farmers Market. The Gumbo Pot is inside Farmers Market. I have a strange feeling that the newer, outdoor restaurants may stay open until 9 p.m. and the internal vendors at the counter service places inside the Market (like the Gumbo Pot) may close earlier. I could be wrong on that though. So be sure to call the Gumbo Pot directly before you go there and make sure they will be open when you are due to arrive. I am sure it will be no problem, but just in case. As you can see from their menu, your DH will have a lot to look forward to!!!

And yes, you will LOVE the pastries at FM - Thee's and Du-Pars are just two of the places to get them, but there is another bakery as well (name escapes me). And if you like peanut brittle or toffee, you can't beat Littlejohns!!!
