My wife suffers from coeliac disease (an intolerance to gluten).

Will she be allowed to bring things like gluten free bread into the US?

What about taking her own foods into the parks?

Can any Coeliacs out there let me know if gluten free food is Widely available from the supermarkets?

Thanks,
Dave

You can buy gluten free products here in the US. I don't know which stores in Florida might carry them. Also, there are a lot of posts about people bringing food into the parks and that security really doesn't stop you. Do a search on this site for both topics and you should get something at least on bringing food in and maybe something on the gluten question. Also, you can do a search on the web on what you can bring into the US.

you cannot take any food into the US. they have the sniffer dogs and they will check you. we had a pack of mini sausages on the plane and one fell out to the bottom of the bag, the dog sniffed it and our bag was searched. we didnt get into any trouble but just to let you know that they do check.....

I thought you could take certain foods with you into the US as long as they were unopened. This may have changed though.

I am sure the last time we went (2 years ago) we were told that you weren't able to take meat, dairy products and fruit into US. That may have changed now though.

Just wanted to let you know that if you and your wife were thinking of dining at Disney, if you give them a little notice they will prepare you wife a delicious dinne suitable for her :)

It's only certain types of food you can't take in - for example, chocolates, biscuits and crisps are all fine :)

I think Slimey Snake's right that it's dairy products, meat and fresh fruit etc. that are not allowed.

You can not take in dairy, meat, fruit or veg & dense foods like xmas puddings & cakes can confuse the scanners who think you are carrying a bomb! You should be fine with biscuits, bread etc. but i would ensure that it is in its original unopened packaging.

You can check out the us customs site for a list of products not allowed.
if you have something you are not sure about that is not listed just declare it to the customs people when you arrive and they will tell you if it is ok or they will take it from you ( which is no big problem) we took a large bottle of orange squash late trip and they said it was ok to take in.
they are really looking to stop the import of diseases and pests ( ivsects not humans) LOL

Our daughter ( aged 6 ) is a coeliac. We have taken our own bread and snacks for the last 2 years. We did declare it just to be on the safe side, but it was not taken off us. Disney are outstanding at providing gluten free food. Just let them know at least 24 hours in advance and they will help in whatever way they can. Our daughter has eaten gluten free pizza, pasta, macaroni cheese, cakes, etc. On more than one occasion, if she wanted something that was not on the menu, the chefs would gladly cook her something else. Universal didn't have a clue and didn't even know what coeliac disease was, but Disney were awesome!!!!

Thanks EvertonCJ,

How did you find buying GF food in the supermarkets?

Dave

We didn't really buy a great deal as we did take alot of snacks with us. The food did not appear to be labelled as clearly as in the UK, so we were not really prepared to take the risk. In fact we had a whole suitcase full of gluten free food. We did take a letter from our GP stating that our daughter was a coeliac, but we didn't have to produce this when we went through customs. It also meant that when we had consumed the food, there was an empty case to put all the clothes that my wife bought!
