Type 1 or type 2? My kids are type 1 and do carb counts so we can eat just about any restuarant but have to estimate the carbs unless we were able to get carb counts out of WDW....which is very difficult...

most places, both full service restaurants and the counter service places have healthier options. Previewing menus at allearsnet.com will help immensely, so you have an idea of what to expect. do a search, there have been several threads both here on restaurants and over on the Disabilities forums about diabetics at WDW.

EVERYWHERE!! :)

we traveled w/a newly dx'd diabetic in january and he had NO problems anywhere we went... just let your server know and he/she will ask the chef to accomodate... he was treated to some of the best looking, tastiest meals and desserts that were not on the menu... was also warned of a few dishes on the buffet and overall pleasantly surprised at how well he was able to eat all while staying w/in the guidelines of his condition...

ENJOY! :flower:

If you decide to make ADR's at any of the WDW restaurants, just let the CM know when you call that you have a diabetic with you. They can note it on the reservation so the chef will be prepared. I think you will find that all of the WDW restaurants are very accommodating and will take special care if you just let them know the situation ahead of time. Good Luck and Enjoy! :goodvibes

I'm a type 1 diabetic and have no problems at WDW when eating. Of course, I'm a pump wearer which means I am extremely flexible with my carbs. I can basically eat what I want and bolus for it. This can be difficult sometimes estimating the carbs but I found a great book that helps.

Go to www.calorieking.com. They have a pocket sized food info book that is invaluable. Gives you typical foods with portion sizes and the carb count. Not perfect, of course, but 98% is better than guessing.

Overall, I am pretty cautious with my bolus. I usually take a little less than I think I need based on the carb count and correct a couple hours later if needed. Don't forget all the walking will bring your blood sugar down a little all by itself.

All type 1's should visit our site

http://disneywithdiabetes.blogspot.com/

there is a link to a Disney Dietary Needs Request form.

It's important that people fill this out requesting help with carb counts. We have been after Disney for 2 yrs to be more forthcoming with carb counts. The answer we got was that they have never had anybody request carb counts before. :confused3 :confused3

If they continue to get requests for carb counts maybe they will be as wonderful catering to type 1 diabetics as they are with people with food allergies.

Both my kids are on pumps 24/7. My youngest was up to 5 injections a day before moving to the pump.

Tribus121's wife (me) here. I have diabetes. Type 2 and I take meds twice a day. I am glad that someone has asked this question. Hubby did the ARD's, but didn't say that there was a diabetic. So I figured that all I could do is limit my portion sizes and what not. I hope that will work out.

Tribus121's wife:woohoo: ::yes:: :hug:

I am type two and we had no problems in Disney this past May. I did do a no no and skipped eating lunch because I was full of drinking fluids ...dont do what I did...
I did lay off a few of the major carbs......breads and pastas. I tested really good all the time. I love the double cheeseburgers at the resorts and parks......and I did eat a few while we were there but didnt bother with the french fries. Just balance out your meals like you would do at home....
