Is there food served in the Oceaneers club? My daughter has a nut allergy and I'm nervous that the counselors might give her food with nuts in it. I know that the kids can go to lunch with the club, but if we pick her up for lunch, is there any other time that they would possibly give her food? I'm just a little worried. Thanks!

DS went to alot of activities in the 3-4 group & says that the only time they had a snack was during the Goofy PJ party. He had just turned 5 and his memory is something that can be lethal at times. LOL! That is now done in the 5-7 group, but the 3-4 group still has a PJ activity on one night.

any make sure you let the counselors know about your DD's allergy. our DS 5, who was 4 at the time, has peanut allergy, and we had a lengthy "discussion" about it when we were registering him that first day.

oh, and dcl also have a form that you can fill out and have your dr fill out, regarding any medical "situation" that dcl should be made aware of! our ta sent it over to us, and we had our pediatrician fill it out, and faxed back to dcl.

the only time our DS5 was at the club where he went with them for lunch was when we went to palo brunch. and he is well aware that he has peanut allergy, and is known to ask/tell "does it have peanuts? i can't have anything peanuts, cuz i'm allergic to them. i can't breath if i eat them."

anyways, the counselor we were talking to, stated that if a child is going to dinner/lunch with the club, they will automatically take away anything that's made with peanuts (or any allergent), so the allergic child (my DS) will not have access, as well as the other kids. just to be safe.

hope this helps. i know it's really scary, when you're not there! :flower:

The children also wash their hands apon entering the club. I believe that no food is allowed to be brought into the club by the kids. I do not plan on having my allergy kids eat meals in the club. They know not to eat certain things, but cross contamination scares me, since the CMs won't administer an Epipen.

They are now serving lunch in the Oceaneer Club on the Disney Magic. I am not sure about the Wonder at this time. The lunch is a basic snadwich (no peanut butter), fruit, and potato chips with apple juice. This procedure started in September due to the stress that was beign caused on the 304 group transitioning to the designated lunch venue.
The department is very aware of food allergies, especially nut allergies and have taken precautions to enusre nut products, by products, and food items that are manufactured in factories were nut products are present are not on the menu.
During my 5 years on the Wonder and the Magic in Youth Activities (Formerly Childrens Programming) the more information guest can give regarding their childrens needs the better we were able to accomodate. Keeping in mind that it is against policy for and CM to administer any form of medication.

Dear Donald Fan,

Are you or were you a kids club worker on the ship? Are you saying we are not to leave the epipen with ouir children because no one will use it on them anyways. They will just page us and wait? I am asking because i have asked my TA to find out and no one seems to know. It is rather important to my family to know how the epipen administration works in the club.

Thanks for anyones help.

I worked on the cruise line for 5 years. 2 years as a counselor/coordinator then 3 years as a manager. As I mentioned the counselors are not permitted to adiminster any form of medication including epi-pens. Having said that it is up to the counselor they would react to a situation were a child is having a reaction. Speaking for myself I would place the pen in the childs hand and "assist" them in injecting themselves. When I left the ship (Dec 2004) it was to my understanding that DCL does not support this action. Fortunately I or anyone else put in that position during my time there. I cannot speak for all the counselors but can tell you that several did feel the same in how they would assist. As trained childcare providers it is not in our nature to stand by and watch during such a time. I would leave the pen with the counselors and ensure that you picked it up everytime you check out your child. The counselors will keep the pen with them. That oddly enough is not an issue with DCL.

Dear Donald,
Thank You very much for your quick and clear answer. It is the first time i have received a clear answer.

Thanks again

Do they serve lunch in the Lab as well?

My son can die from an apple or apple products.

When I left the ship they were serving lunch only in the Oceaneer Club (Disney Magic) for the 3-4's. While they do avoid foods that may contain nuts or nut products or foods that have been manufactured in factories that contain nuts or nut by products it is best to mention any other food allergies asap and whenever you drop your child off.
They were serving apple slices and apples in the fruit salad the last time I was onboard. That was in December of 2004. I know that they can accomodate most allergies but they would require your assistance and as much notice as possible to do so. While onboard it was a challenge with parents that would drop their children off, minutes before a meal time, that would require special meals due to allergies. Also let them know if ther allergy is by ingestion only or if it can be reactive to airborn substances.

Oh no, I am not happy to hear this! Do they do it in the lab too?? My daughter won't eat any sandwich other than peanut butter and jelly, its what she has every day for school lunch....I can see the need to not serve it in the club due to them not knowing the peanut allergy kids but I was hoping they would be taken down to lunch to at least have chicken tenders, her other food she actually eats!

Thank you so much DonaldFan70!

I plan on filling out the proper paperwork before we board, as well as giving written and verbal notice to the CMs the day we board. DS also wears a medical alert emblem.

I don't plan on him eating any meals in the club, because of the seriousness of his allergy. I don't think it would be fair to the CMs to place on them that kind of responsibility. He is ok as long as the children wash their hands and all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned. Apple juices do not spread like peanut oil can.

He will be in the Lab, so it looks like I won't have to worry anyway.

How far away from the club is medical personel. Would the doctor or nurse respond with an Epipen. I plan to provide written info from the doctor. I would also not mind signing a waiver.

Again, thanks for the info. Forwarned is forarmed.

Good thing she does not attended our school! They have a child that even smelling peanut butter they have a serious reaction. So they sent letters home *asking* no one to bring peanut products in the lunches. It is crazy how many kids are having reactions to peanut butter :confused3

They do not serve lunch in the Lab space and all the Lab children (8-12) are takeno to either the Animators Palate or Topsiders (Disney Magic) for meals. But again peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are not served, chicken fingers are but not always (more often then not)

The medical center is located on deck one in the forward area of the ship, the Oceaneer Club and Lab are located in the midship area of deck 5. I am not sure how the doctors would respond but would suspect that if the epi pen is on hand they would administer it or some other form of aid. I always found that the more info the parents could give us on their childrens the better we could accomodate the child.

UGGG!! I just realized that my daughter will be in the club not the lab! So looks like I will be going to get her every day to take her to lunch!
