Does anyone have experience with room service and food allergies? My son has a gluten, casein and soy allergy. We are staying in a suite and plan to order breakfast and some lunches in the room. I emailed the shoreside concierge and they said they would recommend eating in the MDR. Part of the reason we are doing the suite is because of the MDR Room Service.

My daughter has severe food allergies: dairy - anaphylactic reaction; wheezing & hives & oozing skin - corn & any bi-products, lettuce, onion, broccoli, nuts. They were very accommodating. Not sure which ship you will be sailing; however, I have a "special dietary" list request on file with them for six years.

If your son has celiac's disease, they have gluten-free foods. Just check with the ship when you are on board.

I am allergic to soy and don't eat any breads and any related breaded items while I am on the ship.

I don't think room service is as allergy friendly as having the chef talk to you at the buffets or the dining room. I would talk to the concierge hosts when you are on-board about getting specially made food delivered to your cabin. Getting food delivered from the dining rooms I think is different than room service.

How did you file that?

My daughter is ana allergic to eggs, peanuts and treenuts. I am allergic to gluten. We ate in room dining more than once. We had no issues. We had multiple cross contamination issues in the MDR on the Wonder.

The GF pizza was SOOO gross from in room dining, so don't get too excited about that. The cheese platter is great, but they do not have gluten free crackers, so we packed our own. I do not think they had gluten free hamburger buns or hot dog buns either on the Wonder.

My 6 year old son has is celiac. We are traveling on the Wonder in November. Can we bring gluten free hamburger buns and crackers for him?

The answer to me was that as long as it was/is in original manufacturers wrapping you can. If you home make it...no. You will not be able to take left-overs off the ship if you open the packages.

My son has a dairy allergy and we have never ordered room service for him because we have been told that they will not accomodate the allergy. However, we have never really wanted to eat in the room - we are not huge snackers and always go to the buffet or MDR (with pre-ordered food for him). We had also been warned away from the "fast food" spots on the pool deck but have been able to look over ingredients if they are not too busy and get him some food from there.

We sailed on the Dream in July. My dd (12) has Celiac. They have GF buns onboard. They also had GF cookies, muffins, donuts, pasta, pizza, etc. Every night when we sat down for dinner, she had her own basket of GF rolls waiting for her. Love DCL. We didn't have to worry about what she could eat and she had so many options.

I think regular Room Service and in suite dining from the MDR are totally different things. I would not trust regular room service with allergies -- we have a hard time making them understand they need to leave mayo off the BLT and have other communication issues when making requests to regular room service. Now meals that are sent to the suite from the MDR are prepared in the MDR kitchen and should go through the same allergy check as if you were in that dining room. I would just remind them of the allergies when ordering.

I would agree about the MDRs being really good with allergies-- we had a little girl who is highly allergic to peanuts, treenuts-- anaphylatic. Every MDR meal, they servers were really good and the head server always came to ask and helped out with the food allergies. Even before CC, the head server was very helpful.

That is my biggest complaint about DCL. They are SO inconsistent. They had the GF rolls on our cruise. They tasted and were the texture of foam, but they were slider size. I asked every time I ordered a burger and got the same...we dont have GF buns. I asked for a lettuce wrap, they didn't know how to do it, so they brought out a burger on a plate of shredded lettuce. I asked if I could get some giant leafs...it had all been cut up already. This happened/I asked 5-7 times on our 14 night cruise, so it was not just one place/person giving me that answer.
