We just got home early Monday morning and I wanted to share our dining experiences! We stayed 8 nights at POR on free dining! It was our first time doing the DDP and we're sorta hooked now...Enough about that though, on to the good stuff!

The cast:
Jiminy Cricket: AKA Grams, my 67-year-old grandmother who braved our Disney trip. She eats like a bird usually, but she actually put some food away this time!
Chicks “Thunder” Hicks: AKA Dennis, my 53-year-old dad. He’ll try anything but pasta. He loves beer.
Lady: AKA Michelle, my soon to be 50-year-old mom. She’s a chocoholic. She won't touch seafood and her tastes aren't that adventurous.
Tink: AKA me, Darcie, soon to be 20+10. I don’t eat red meat, pork, or much seafood, but I will try most anything once (even Calamari this trip which I promptly regreted after I looked more closely and distinctly spied a little octopus head and tentacles on hanging little legs, ew).
Timon: AKA my 28-year-old DH, Jeff. He’ll try just about anything (he was the one who ordered the calamari and ate most of it until I pointed out my findings).
Cinderella: AKA my 13-year-old daughter. Loves candy, candy, candy.
The other members of our party are children and I didn't review their meals because, frankly, they were quite boring. Standard fare: chicken strips, mac'n'cheese, hot dogs. You get the idea.
Ariel: my 9-year-old daughter
Tigger: my 7-year-old daughter
Stitch: my 4-year-old nephew
And last but not least, Pooh: my 13-month old son

I don’t know about all of you but when I’m reading dining reviews on these boards I have two main objectives: #1 SEE THE PICTURES! And #2 I want to know the bottom line: was it good? I usually skip over the details about the food, but then again, I’m not really a foodie. So, my review is going to be made up mostly of pictures and a brief description of our experiences at each restaurant. If you’re looking for an in-depth review, this one probably isn’t your cup of tea! Oh, and I will include a lot of pictures, but with four children to worry about at the restaurants, I wasn’t able to get pictures of everything. Sorry…

Restaurants to be reviewed:
Kona – dinner
Starring Rolls – CS breakfast
Mama Melrose – Dinner
Pecos Bills – CS lunch
Crystal Palace – Dinner
Wolfgang Puck Express (3 times)– CS lunch
Whispering Canyon Café – Dinner
Sunshine Seasons – CS lunch
Ohana – Dinner
Flame Tree BBQ – CS lunch
Spoodles – Adults only Dinner
Boatwrights- Breakfast
Liberty Tree Tavern – Dinner
Le Cellier – Dinner

Okay, so there is the background. Now, as Peter Pan would say, "Here we go!"

We started our trip with a dinner at Kona café. My expectations were high as I’d heard so many rave reviews here on the boards. I’m not sure our experience lived up, but it was not a bad experience nonetheless. I’d heard (read actually) it told that the restaurant is open to the lobby and therefore very noisy. I’d say “noisy” is an understatement. We were there on Saturday, Sept. 22nd. Our ADR was for 6:40 and we arrived without a minute to spare. The area surrounding the restaurant was incredibly hectic and horribly loud (the kind of loud where you have to lean over and speak directly into the ear of the person you’re talking to). It was what I commonly refer to as a “madhouse.” After about a fifteen minute wait we were shown to our table which was right in the center of the madness, er, restaurant. Our server didn’t show up right away and as the meal wore on we found her disappearing act to be a common occurrence. She went over the dining plan options with us and let us know that specialty drinks (smoothies and virgin pina coladas and daiquiris) were included on the plan. Our table ordered two virgin pina colada’s, one virgin strawberry daiquiri, one strawberry smoothie, and then a bunch of boring drinks like coke, bottled water, beer, and wine (okay, okay, the wine wasn’t so boring).

I had the pina colada. I found it to be way too sweet. I didn’t drink the whole thing. Cinderella had the strawberry smoothie. I tried it and lo and behold, it too was way too sweet. In spite of my complaints about the noise level in the restaurant and the service and the sugary drinks, I’m really not a chronic whiner. I swear I’m not. Read on, you’ll see. Anyway, Timon, who is a big fan of kool-aid and equally sugar-laden drinks even thought these things were too sweet. The sweetness overpowered any coconut or pineapple flavor that may have been lurking underneath all that syrup! Nice presentation though.

For appetizers, Jiminy Cricket got the crab cakes. She absolutely loved these. She’s not a big eater because she tends to get ill when she eats a lot, but she ate almost every bit of these.

DisneyWorld-Day1045.jpg

Lady and Timon both ordered the Sticky Wings and both ate them clean to the bone. Later in the week we visited Ohana and Lady commented that the Kona Sticky Wings were better than the Ohana ones. I’ve read that the wings are the same at both restaurants, but the ones at Kona were presented with a mustard-color sauce where as the ones at Ohana were not. Perhaps it was the sauce that made the Kona wings better to her.

DisneyWorld-Day1047.jpg

Thunder ordered the Kona Seafood chowder which I unfortunately didn’t get a picture of. He licked the bowl clean though. Me, Tink, ordered the Kona salad. It was yummy yummy yummy. It had these sugared nuts on it and the dressing was Yum-O as Rachael would say. I ate every last bite.

DisneyWorld-Day1046.jpg

Cinderella ordered the Caesar salad. She enjoyed it so much that she ordered another Caesar later in the trip.

DisneyWorld-Day1048.jpg

We were starting to wonder if we’d get the Kona bread because it took forever for the server to bring it out. We finally did though. The butter really makes the bread. It’s some sort of honey butter with macademia nuts and it was also Yum-O.

DisneyWorld-Day1049.jpg

For entrees, Jiminy, Cinderella and Lady all ordered the Filet Mignon. The consensus was that it too was very good.

DisneyWorld-Day1053.jpg

Thunder ordered the beef teriyaki. Again, he said it was good. Well-cooked and flavorful.

DisneyWorld-Day1054.jpg

Timon ordered the Coconut Almond Chicken. The server warned him when he ordered that it was a “salad” and it was very light. Once it was served we both agreed that it should not have been described as a salad because it was clearly a piece of meat with a small salad on the side. Timon and I shared it. He liked it more than I did. We both agreed that it was sort of bland; again, it was lacking the coconut flavor. In fact, I only ate a bite or two. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t nearly as good as the Pan Asian noodles I ordered (which we also shared). The dish was slightly salty (that’s a good thing if you ask me) and the veggies were crisp and flavorful. I wished that I hadn’t agreed to share with Timon, but there was plenty of food to go around so it wasn’t bad.

DisneyWorld-Day1050.jpg

DisneyWorld-Day1052.jpg

For desert, Jiminy, Thunder, and Timon got the Apple Brown Betty and each of them slurped up every last bite of it.

DisneyWorld-Day1060.jpg

Lady got the Kilauea Torte. She loved it, but then again, she is a total chocoholic. She really liked the warm chocolate liquid inside the brownie.

DisneyWorld-Day1057.jpg

Unlike my mother, I am not a huge chocolate fan so you won’t find me ordering any overly chocolate desserts this trip. In fact, you’ll probably begin to notice a crème brulee pattern, but that’s a story for another day. At Kona, I ordered the White Chocolate Cheesecake. It was okay. There wasn’t much flavor to it really. If I had it to do over again I most likely would have gone with the Apple Brown Betty.

DisneyWorld-Day1059.jpg

Cinderella ordered the Kona cone because in an effort to encourage her that ordering off the adult menu wouldn’t be a bad thing, I’d been telling her about it for months. She wasn’t disappointed either, though she couldn’t finish the whole thing. She left Kona that night voicing her opposition to ordering three things at every meal. My response was that there was no rule requiring her to eat every bite of it! I encouraged her to just try some of the appetizer she ordered and then pass it around the table. She was much happier with that arrangement during the meals that followed!

DisneyWorld-Day1058.jpg

Overall, I would give Kona a B-. In spite of the food being good, the ambience really distracted from the enjoyability factor at this meal. Maybe it would be better for a night other than arrival night because after safely maneuvering multiple airports with four children and fifteen bags in tow, I think we just needed a more relaxing environment. Also, our server was gone for long periods of time and wasn’t prompt with refilling drinks and bringing out bread, etc. I’d probably try Kona again, but I’m not dying to go back.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading along. I hope to add Starring Rolls and Mama Melrose tomorrow. And do me a huge favor: read my Mama Melrose review! It gets such a bad rap on these boards and I think it is totally undeserved!

Brillant, looking forward to reading more.

Interested in your other ADR's and reviews! Good job so far, though for some reason I don't see any pics! :confused3

Not seein' the pics here either....only the little red x's. Crap!

Oy Vey! No pictures??? And I spent so much time putting those things up on Google Picasa. For the record, I would have just put them on photobucket like everybody else does, but nooooooo. My DH is a computer type and he usually insists on doing things the hard way. Case in point: these pictures. However, I've now doubled the work by uploading everything to photobucket. I sure hope it works and the pictures I insisted on taking before everybody began eating will replace those frustrating little boxes with the x's in them. Let me know please because I don't want to continue until the pictures show up!

I can see your pictures fine and I'm really enjoying your report. Thanks for taking the time to write it!

Sondra

Thank you so much for ordering the pan asian noodles! That has been my tough decision, what to order and Kona, and you helped cinch the deal for me!

We know the restaurant can get quiet noisy at breakfast, usually from the people waiting to get into Ohana!

Yay! Great start and can't wait to hear more:thumbsup2 . You have an adorable:grouphug: family!!!

Thank you! I think they're pretty cute myself!

I know! I couldn't find any reviews of the Pan Asian noodles before I went either! You won't be sorry if you get them though. Oh, and on the DDP, you can add shrimp and it is included in the plan. Just FYI.

Subbing~ Great reviews

How was traveling with a 13 month old? Our son will be 19 months when we go and I hope he will be okay.

Okay, so on Sunday, September 23rd we headed over to MGM. Jiminy and Lady took the three youngest ones to Hollywood n’ Vine for breakfast with the Little Einsteins and JoJo. I wasn’t there so I can’t comment on the food. They didn’t really comment on it either because they had their hands completely full with the kids. They said they barely ate a bite because they were so busy getting food for Tigger and Stitch and shoveling it down Pooh’s throat (We called him Pooh this trip because he always has a rumbly in his tumbly). Anyway, the rest of us used the opportunity to ride TOT over and over again. Here is a picture of us in line for TOT. Not food porn, I know, but I thought I’d use the opportunity to show off the t-shirts my aforementioned computer junkie DH designed. I hope nobody minds, but I'm going to throw in a few pictures of the fam here and there; I always like to get to know the peeps I'm reading about, hopefully you do to!

Moving right along though…We stopped in at Starring Rolls to grab a bite. I had the hardest time getting any information on this place before we left, so I thought I’d pass along our experience there even though this was one of those places I didn’t get any pictures of. The cast members there seemed to have a hard time with the dining plan. They couldn’t really give us a straight answer as to what was included with a CS credit. Snack credits, on the other hand, they had no problems with. But, we wanted to use a CS credit, so they ended up calling in somebody else who informed us that we could choose one pastry, one piece of fruit, and two beverages. There were two walls devoted to bagels and pastries. DH and I both chose apple turnovers which were large and light and fluffy. Cinderella and Ariel chose other pastries, and I can’t remember what they were exactly but they both enjoyed them. They had a large refrigerated case stocked with milk, chocolate milk, bottled waters, teas, and juices. Everything was pretty standard bakery fare, nothing seemed to jump out. It was good though, and kept our appetites at bay for most of the morning and into the afternoon. My only complaint was that it took forever to be cashed out because they couldn’t quite grasp the whole CS option. A line built behind us rather quickly and I felt bad!

Our TS meal that day was at Mama Melrose. I was prejudiced against this going in, again, because of what I’d read here on the boards. I warned everyone in our party that they shouldn’t have high hopes for this meal. Everyone wondered why I made ADR’s there if that was the case and I told them about the Fantasmic Dining Package and then they understood. Anyway, after the parade we braved a sudden downpour and headed over to Mama Melrose. Our ADR was for 4:00 which was an early dinner, but it was okay since none of us had eaten much to that point. The lobby area of the restaurant was pretty full of wet people and ponchos and umbrellas and the like. We arrived around 3:45 and they didn’t let me check in right away; they told me to come to the podium in five minutes. I did and we were seated after only a few minutes of waiting.

I was really impressed with the ambience of the restaurant. They had white Christmas lights strung from the ceiling and charming décor placed on shelves and hung from the ceiling. They also had cute little red gingham curtains to provide a bit of privacy for the individual tables. Lady and I both noticed that there were Christmas balls and some holly and things hung up and she wondered why. My best guess was that they were getting ready for the Osborne light festival. Anyway, there was plenty of space in between the tables and it wasn’t overly loud. The lights were dim which contributed to a relaxed feel and it was nice and cool. I tried to capture it in a picture and it didn’t turn out so great, but here it is anyway. Those poor people at that table probably wondered why I was taking their picture (while they were eating no less!)

DisneyWorld-Day1095.jpg

We had a great server who explained our options on the DDP. I don’t think there were any specialty drinks offered. The kids all got sodas and most of the adults opted for bottled waters. I paid OOP for a glass of chardonnay which was a very welcome creature comfort for me. Perhaps that is another of the reasons I found this place to be so relaxing! Anyway, for some reason I missed out on pictures of the appetizers. Sorry. I can certainly tell you about them though. Lady ordered the Bruschetta. She let me try some and it was so yummy. The tomatoes were tangy and flavorful, like they had just a bit of vinegar zip to them. YUM-O! Jiminy, Cinderella, and I ordered the minestrone. Minestrone is a newly-discovered favorite of mine so I couldn’t pass up on it. It was very good; the vegetables were plentiful and not soggy as was the ditalini pasta. The broth was just salty enough, not too much so like is common with canned minestrone. Cinderella commented that she preferred my homemade version. Have any of you other cooks out there ever noticed that the same dishes you prepare at home taste so much better when someone else makes it? There are exceptions of course, but I tend to prefer foods that I don’t have to prepare. Is that just me? Moving right along though…DH ordered the mixed greens and I can’t remember what Thunder ordered.

For entrees, Jiminy and Timon both ordered the salmon and both raved about it for days. Timon describes it as “cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection.” He says it was very flavorful without tasting too fishy. Here is the picture.

DisneyWorld-Day1092.jpg

Thunder ordered the Charred Butcher Tender Steak. He enjoyed it immensely stating that it too was cooked to perfection.

DisneyWorld-Day1091.jpg

Lady ordered the chicken parmesan and reported that it was a bit on the dry side. She said the pasta was well cooked and not soggy and the sauce was flavorful but that the chicken was a bit overcooked and thus dry.

DisneyWorld-Day1093.jpg

I, of course, ordered a chicken dish. The wood-grilled chicken to be exact (minus the peas, blech). It was delicious. You know how sometimes when you order a pasta dish they try to shortchange you on the meat? Well, not so at Mama Melrose. There was plenty of smoky flavored grilled chicken to be found. The pasta was not overcooked; the artichokes added the perfect salty/tangy flavor and complimented the sweet roasted red peppers very nicely. Oh, and I’m not usually a fan of alfredo sauce so I was tentative ordering this dish because it said the sauce was four-cheese and I feared it would be too heavy and creamy like typical Alfredo sauces taste to me. I needn’t have feared because it wasn’t heavy at all. It was perfect on this dish.

DisneyWorld-Day1089.jpg

For dessert, our table ordered one of everything on the menu with the exception of the ricotta cheesecake (I’m sorry but that doesn’t even sound good). DH (Timon) got the Crema Limone. He was really going out on a limb here because the word ‘custard’ in the description turned him off but he figured that since we were on the DDP he would step out of his comfort zone. As it turned out, he said that his dessert at Mama Melrose was delicious and second only to the apple pumpkin dessert he got at Le Cellier later in the week.

DisneyWorld-Day1106.jpg

Surprise Surprise! Lady ordered the Warm Chocolate Truffle cake. It was chocolately so she loved it.

DisneyWorld-Day1104.jpg

I ordered the Tiramisu. I’d not tried Tiramisu before so I didn’t know what to expect. It was ok. I didn’t know it was made out of soggy cookies or I may not have ordered it. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. I ate about half of it. It sure looked pretty though didn't it (minus the finger smear my DD got in before I could snap the picture...)

DisneyWorld-Day1102.jpg

Jiminy and Cinderella both ordered the Gelato. If you’ve never tried gelato, as I hadn’t before this trip, you might assume it’s just ice cream. You’d be partly right. It’s very ice-cream like but it’s definitely, smoother and richer. It’s actually quite good.

DisneyWorld-Day1103.jpg

While we're on the topic of desserts, have you noticed that these desserts aren't all that big? It wasn't an issue for us of course because we were on the DDP. I only mention it because a lot of times when you go to a restaurant you order one or two desserts for the entire party to share (at least that's how we do it). And, these desserts aren't really big enough for more than two people. I'd not be happy if I ordered these and paid OOP thinking the family could share. However, with each person getting one of their own on the DDP, there was plenty! Just thinking aloud.

Overall, I would so have to give Mama Melrose a solid A. So many reviews I’ve read here describe it as “inedible” or “barely better than Olive Garden.” Call me a simpleton if you must but I don’t see anything wrong with Olive Garden. In fact, I actually like Olive Garden (gasp). So, if you are someone who thinks Olive Garden is a hyped up version of an Italian Taco Bell, you might not like Mama Melrose. My family, though, (all ten of us) loved it. The ambience was a soothing respite from the hectic park, the menu offered a wide variety and the food was flavorful and served up piping hot. Our service was equally commendable. Towards the end of our meal a couple of cast members dressed as a big Italian lady and an Italian movie director started making the rounds interacting with the guests. They were hilarious and very kind to our inquisitive children, even sitting down to look at our DD’s pins. Maybe going into the experience with low expectations helped to enhance our experience, I don’t know. We would not hesitate to book another ADR at Mama Melrose though because it turned out to be one of the top four of our trip!

Next up is Pecos Bills and Crystal Palace. Will we rave about the topping bar at Pecos Bills? Did Crystal Palace live up to the hype? Tune in and see... Oh, and thanks for all the nice comments!

Subbing~ Great reviews

How was traveling with a 13 month old? Our son will be 19 months when we go and I hope he will be okay.

It wasn't bad. He's a good baby though, so that probably helped. His biggest complaint was that he was strapped into a stroller for much of the time and he would have much rather been putting his newly perfected walking skills to the test. It's funny because at home he only wants to be held but at Disney World he didn't want to be held or put in the stroller. We tried to let him get up and walk around as much as possible but it was tough because he kept getting in people's way and I didn't want him to get run over. Oh, and he was scared to death of the characters. We had to keep a safe distance from them!

I went to WDW once before with my 20 month old DD and that was fine too. She has Down syndrome though and she was happy as a clam just strolling along and checking out the sights.

We took advantage of the baby care centers a lot and they were so nice. I can't stress that enough. They were cool and quiet and clean. Disney is brilliant for putting those things in their parks! They even sell things you may have forgotten like formula, diapers, sunscreen, even baby tylenol and stuff. They were great!

We have used a CS at Starring Rolls twice and really enjoyed it, but I have to agree they have absolutely no idea at all!! The first time we could have a sandwich(with chips), a pastry from a very limited choice and a drink, but by the second time, last November we could have any pastry/dessert they sold.
