"Following" Someone

It almost seems like a moot point to follow that many people - that you don't really know.

Might be better to just take it slowly and follow people you really have something of interest with, idk.

I don't have Facebook so is hitting the "like" button here on the DIS the same has hitting some "follow" button?? Just curious. And BTW I love the "likes" guys.....keep them up. I'm at #547!! :)

Lynne answered that:

Nope, there's a separate Follow button. I see where the confusion comes in, though, because on Facebook, if you Like a page, you're following it, and it shows up in your feed.

Think of our Like button on posts as being similar to the Like button on one of your friend's posts on FB. It just tells the poster that you enjoyed their post, agree with it, etc.

I think folks are seeing sinister implications where there aren't any.

The Follow button is a tool to help people filter the firehose of information that these boards can be. Here's an example of how you can use it.

Let's say you notice that certain posters on the Theme Parks board have really great tips on using FP+. Or someone on the Resorts board always seems to know when discounts are coming. Or a poster on the DCL board just got off the cruise you'll be taking this summer, and you don't want to miss any of their comments about their trip. You could search for these people's posts every day, but that would be a pain. Or, you could follow them, and then go to your news feed page, and all of those posts would be automatically collected for you.

By the way, someone who follows you is not notified every time you post. I followed Webmaster Jackie when I was playing with this today, and I do see her posts on my news feed, but I'm not getting any notifications.
Can you "unfollow" someone, if you've started following them?

Considering how many people didn't seem to know or understand what the follow option did, I really doubt the follower does either.

I am skeptical because you don't know if it really is someone looking for friends or someone who is just playing a game. We've had cases in the past where it was all made up, took everyone on a wild goose chase, playing on sympathy.

I have to say, I do find it a bit creepy. How could somebody possibly follow over 500 people? And why? I get the whole follow thing in general, as there are posters on these boards who tend to post interesting things, or are an all around good person (I'm talking about you Tina! LOL), and people know that what they post is usually some very good advice. But to just randomly pick people to follow for no rhyme or reason just seems odd to me.

I'm not following anyone. I don't have the attention span to "stock" anyone. It's wonder I've been married so long. ;-)

Hi Phours!

The problem is, some of us have been followed. Have been stalked.

It isn't fun. It isn't funny.

Okay... I didn't realize that someone would take offense? I'm not trying to make light of people feeling like they were violated by getting "followed" or subscribed by someone on here. IMO, I don't think the poster that followed everyone is stalking them. I think someone said they followed over 500 people. I think it would be hard to stalk and keep tabs on all 500 people.

I guess I'll delete my comment?

I just received a follow from a random person I've never heard of - I just ignored them.

So did I and everyone else but it still means you are now being followed.

Yes that is also what I said in a previous post. Just never know and honestly no reason a new mwmber should be following so many people all at once. There really isnt anything beneficial to doing that since they do not know whom they are following and for what reasons.

Isn't following everyone like following no one? I think we are being toyed with.

As has been said several times:

If someone follows you here, it allows them to more conveniently see your posts. It works very much like clicking on your user name, then Profile, then Postings.

There is nothing sinister here, there is no secret information revealed. It has nothing to do with "feelings", it's simply a default capability of our software that is available to all members.

Remember that this is primarily a forum to share trip planning information, and that posts here are visible to anyone on the WWW, even those who are not members here. You can limit whose posts YOU see by using the IGNORE feature, but you cannot limit who sees your posts. If you are not comfortable with the entire world potentially reading your posts, then don't put them here.

If you are posting here, we have to assume that it is so your posts will be read. The "follow" feature is simply a way to facilitate that. Whether to use it is the choice of every member.

i went to check my 'followers' and see i now have 57 new friends....

and i never knew the news feed was the short cut way to see who is where......

So let's say it is someone "who is just playing a game". How does following 500 people affect that "game"?

Unless they don't know what they're doing.

Can someone please explain to me what the worst thing they think can happen if you're being "followed" on here? If the poster was "following" you on multiple message boards, I could understand feeling "stalked". I don't see the danger here.

Yes, everyone is entitled to their feelings. And everyone is entitled to comment on those feelings also.
