This may be a question for the camping threads but here goes---Has anyone ever checked charcoal the match light kind into a checked bag not a carry on?We are staying in a cabin at fort wilderness and will need it.Also can I check marshmallow roasting forks?

It doesn't appear that charcoal itself is a prohibited item, but lighter fluid is. See http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/prohibited-items#9. Because Match Light is basically charcoal soaked in lighter fluid, you shouldn't bring it on an aircraft; it doesn't matter if it's in a checked or carry-on bag.

There also doesn't seem to be any guidance specifically about marshmallow forks, but generally speaking, there are no restrictions on sharp objects if they are in checked baggage.

If you are staying at the campground why not just buy the charcoal at the trading post at the campground. I would not even think about taking any type of charcoal on the plane - you just never know what could happen. As for the forks, as long as they are in checked luggage you would be okay.

I would not attempt to bring matchlight on a plane. I'm pretty sure it has lighter fluid of some sort in it already. If a dog comes near your bag it is going to smell it And cause problems for you. It may delay the plane, evacuate the airport, who knows these days. In the very least you are going to miss your flight. Even if it doesn't happen now, that smell will remain in your bag. Next time you use it a dog may smell it even though its not in there.

One of the Disney cruises I went on the whole terminal was evacuated just as we were going to board the ship. A dog reacted to someone's bag. We had to wait outside for hours while it was investigated. It turns out someone put their bags down on their lawn while they were loading their car. Their lawn was just fertilized and the dog smelled the fertilizer.
