by all means carry it on. I would never put my gear in something that leaves my site, gets tossed around, is subject to search without me being present.
Spent way too much on my gear to put it at risk
Do put your tripod and or monopod in your check in though, probably won't pass security with that.
ITA with the other posters.
Also...check with your airline about how many bags you can "carry on".
A purse and my camera backpack is allowed on Spirit..but...if I had another carry on, don't know if it would be allowed??
I say this because I see your precious little "vettechicklet" and know there's a diaper bag..somewhere
I always carry on my camera gear. I even pull the head and leveling base off of my tripod and stick them in my carryon bag as well. Small, expensive items have a mysterious way of getting lost in checked luggage.
I would also recommend that you never buy designer suitcases. No sense in advertising to crooks which bags have nice stuff in them.
Definitely carry on. Although this trip I'm going to have to stick a few lenses in my regular luggage, along with the tripod - otherwise there'll be just no room in the camera bag. (I think we're currently talking two DSLRs, flash, 7-8 lenses, etc - yikes!)
