Can I take a container of formula in my carry-on? Or can I just put the powder in a bottle and make it on the plane (taking it through security)??

As per TSA, you may bring a bottle of "reasonable" formula that must be declared and could be screened (swab over open bottle). The thing is up to the agent what that reasonable amount could be :confused3 This is what I used to do, I would carry a prepared bottle thru security (only swabbed once in 12 flights)and bring 2 extra bottles with the powder mixed in and/or the plastic premeasured container with three servings of powdered formula. Always carried extra of the powdered, just, in case...

I found it easiest to just take powder with me on the plane. I have one of those plastic containers that you measure the formula into that I would always keep in my diaper bag. The flight attendants were always happy to give me water to make a bottle.

I would not plan on using water from the plane. If they don't give you bottled water, then you might be stuck with using water from the plane's tanks and there is no certainty that that water is "clean," particularly for a baby.

Take a couple extra containers of liquid formula, if a screener hassles you, ask for a supervisor and then explain that you are just being prepared for the possibility of a flight delay. Or, if you don't trust TSA to make a reasonable decision, once through the security process get "city" water from the water fountain at the airport.

Just a note, that shouldn't be a problem from where she is flying...however if you fly from a smaller airport they don't have the equipment to test those containers without opening them. I had this happen to me. The formula is good for a limited time once you open those without refrigeration. They will do you no good.

Always have powder with you as a back up.

And yes they gave me bottled water for my daughter's bottle of formula.

ETA: Kansas City does have the equipment to check the premade formula bottles. El Paso does not. I saw you are in Missouri and wasn't sure if you were flying from KC or STL.

I have done this several times. I, too, have the plastic container broken into 4 sections where I can pre-measure enough formula for 4 bottles. It is really inexpensive at Target or WalMart. I then purchase a large bottle of water once thru security. I found this was the scenario with the least hassles. Remember that if there is turbulence on the flight they will not service beverages. I had this happen to me on one flight and I was very grateful I had purchased drinks once past security.

Have fun!
