Does anyone know the rules about flying with an epipen:confused3 ....it does contain a needle and I do have a prescription. We are flying Delta and Airtran. Do I need to contact them first or have something from the dr with me???

My son and my husband both have epipens. We have flown with them several times and never been questioned at all. I have always had them in the original prescription box that they came in. We flew airtran, not sure about Delta but I would think that would be more of a TSA security clearance rather than an individual airline.

We fly with one as my husband has to carry one with him. This last trip, just a few weeks ago, he did not even have the percription box just the pen in the the same baggie that he keeps is other perscription meds in inside of his carrry on bag.

I've been flying with an insulin pen for many years and no one has ever even noticed it. I keep the extra insulin with in the original prescription box, but again, it's never been an issue.

I do recommend taking the appropriate documentation (if still available and legible!) We carry an epipen for our 3yo daughter frequently and have never had it "flagged" at security. (We have flown 10+ trips with it) In fact, one trip I thought they were seeing the Epipien when they needed to hand screen our luggage and what they had seen was a non-metal nail file. (Be careful what you pack without thinking! LOL!) They are very adept at discerning what an injection pen should look like. I have also flown with Imitrex injections and never been questioned.

Good Luck!!!!

I usually carry two of them, no documentation other than the label. I have my pharmacist print out a second label to put on the pen tube as opposed to ahving to lug the box along.

My daughter had never had a problem carrying hers, however last February their flight to Ireland was cancelled (out of NJ) and they had to go to Paris first. When they got off Continental in Paris, and went to get on the plane taking them to Ireland, the security in Paris would not let her go through. After tons of arguments, they finally said it would be up to the pilot, who did agree to let it on the plane. I believe it was held onto, and given back once they landed. It had already been a two day rigamorole getting to Paris, and it was very frustrating.

Ducklite has it correctly. I ask the pharmacist to put the label on the pen and not on the box. I carry the pen in my pocket and throw the box away.

Have a great trip!:cool1:
