Hi

We are thinking of going to Disney this summer, and I can't get my daughters passport until Sept.. so I was wondering if we drive to Buffalo and fly, will they still ask for a passport?.. We have our birthcert.. Also, anyone know what SW puts out there prices for Aug??

Thanks in advance

You do not need a passport to drive across the border and at the Buffalo airport you only need photo ID such as a drivers license.

We are doing the exact same thing this July with our entire family of 8. One of the reasons we decided to fly out of Buffalo is because our children and grandchildren do not have passports, only birth certificates. Begining 2008, you will need a passport to cross the border by car, on foot or by plane.

Just curious. Why can't you get her passport until Sept?

I know the line ups for passports (and resulting delays in delivery) are crazy now because of the new American law but 9 months...?

Actually as per the Passport Canada website FAQ the WHTI implementation date is not confirmed. At it's earliest it will be implemented June 1, 2009. This it the clause that will require passports for any entry to the US from Canada, by car, plane or sea.

Hi Beth - I actually live in Waterloo now - on Blythwood RD.

Actually the resolution seeking to delay only grants PERMISSION to delay until June 2009. If all the requisite requirements are met in advance of that date, the new rules will go into effect earlier than June 2009.

I read the info on the website also and they can implement it if all the requirements are met but they must give 3 months notice.

Of the people travelling across the border by car is anyone worried about not having a passport. I keep getting conflicting messages and advice from people. I personally would prefer not to spend the extra money now on passports, if I can put it off for another year or two. But by the same token I don't want to get stuck at the border. We only travel to the US no other country in our future. We are all red headed blue eyed Canadians. I just don't know what to do.

I go over to the US literally 25 times a year. Always I just use my drivers license. I have never been given a hard time about not having a passport. Many people will say it is "easier" with a passport but I have never found it difficult.

"Citizenship"
"Canadian"
"Where are you going?"
"To the airport to fly to Florida for a week"
"Anything to decalre?"
"No"
"Have a nice day"

It's always been straight forward.

I'm another one who travels to the US many times during the year. My DH and I have a lot of relatives who are Americans. We have two flights booked this year for S Florida out Buffalo. My DH and I both have passports so our next trip is no problem. But when we travel in July, we're talking 3 of our grandkids along. As long as we drive across the border, we won't need passports for them. All they need are birth certificates and consent letters from their parents. If we were to fly out of a Canadian airport, then they'd need the passports. The word is that this may be the last year when we can do this. Changes are on their way, possibly as soon as 2008. But back to your question. Am I worried about driving across the border? Not at all.

This is from a US gov't website

January 23, 2007 – Passports, Merchant Mariner Documents (MMDs) or NEXUS Air cards would be required for all air travel from within the Western Hemisphere for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda.

I read that to mean you need a passport for air travel if you are a Canadian. I does not matter where you board. I could be wrong but I would not take any questions! I really think this means that just because you drive across the border does not mean you can fly without a passport. Even US citizens will need them.

Proof of citizenship is not required for domestic travel within the USA. Only for travel into the USA via air. For example, there are no US Customs people screening air travellers at the Buffalo airport. Thus, no one to check for proof of citizenship.

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative Rule Outlines New Document Requirements for Air Travel
Release Date: November 22, 2006

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary

Today, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Department of State announced the official requirement for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere beginning January 23, 2007.

A passport is a "nice to have" when crossing the border via car (for Canadian citizens born in Canada). However, it is not required. As posted here, many people have experience with crossing with only a drivers license.

Sorry - just trying to help - I really did read this as "ALL AIR TRAVEL..."

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm back on my no passports this time train of thought. I'd rather spend the money at Disney than give it to the government just yet.

We are fling out of Rochester in April and have yet to apply for Passports. We are still waiting for DD's birth certificate (long story).

Lets just see how those going in Feb make out, then we'll know for sure.
